Now the singer, well, the singer's first language is most obviously not English. From the sound of it, she's doing it all phonetically. Nearly every word shows signs of a struggle. She blithely misses all those verbal cues native Englishers don't notice until they go wrong in a spectular fashion. Words are often accented in completely the wrong way, as if she's got no experience about what usually means what. She pronounces words apologetically, even go as far as wrecking the rhythm of a line to make sure all those hard consonants are nice and sharp: "...one, who keeps stearing arount..." and "WITH. My UuuZZzzuaaal flaairrr."
I've been listening to this for weeks and I've assumed that Takase the one with the Japanese-sounding name was the singer. Ha ha ha, the joke's on me. She turns out to be the accompanying pianist. Maria João is the singer...and she's from Portugal, not Japan. Still sounds Japanese to me. She has a very girlish voice, and nearly every Japanese woman vocalist I've ever heard is girlish-sounding to some degree. (But I listen to a LOT of j-pop so what could I know?)
And yet, in the midst of all of that, after a particularly clumsy "I though

Christine Wodrascka (piano), Ramon Lopez (drums) Takase, Karayorgis and Wodrascka are all firm-handed pianists who take jazz seriously. The first two owe something two Monk who doesn't? but their languages are quite different despite some superficial similarities; Wodrascka is more distant from the jazz tradition, but this is still very much jazz music rather than something else. Riley is, if course, an established player with an international reputation; while comparisons with the younger players are unfair, there's clearly some common ground here among them all. Takase is all over the keyboard; she has more Cecil Taylor in her playing than first appears. There are none of the great galloping chromatic runs which pianists employ so liberally these days, however, and it's the older man's sense of jazz harmony which seems to have made an impact on Takase. The fifteen improvisations here are freewheeling and rather wild for the most part, but the complete confidence of touch which powers them along is wedded to a cunning thematic approach to developing material and one never feels that the music is slipping away from her.

Her voice seems to be, at the same time strange and natural, and Mário Laginha´s piano sounds perfect for the many influences of Maria João, who never ventures too far from here Portugese backround. Her amazing ability to transform delicate musical structures into tones, words and whispers is singular and simply amazing.
Mumadgi is the word used in the Changana dialect of Mozambique, to define a Portuguese European. From January 2001 Mumadgi is also the name Maria João e Mário Laginha will be using to identify their joint project. To join them, they invited two of the musicians who participated on the recordings of their last album – the brasilian Toninho Ferragutti and the Norwegian Helge Norbakken. A new album recorded live in Barcelona and Oporto will be release in 2001. The repertoire will be mainly from "Chorinho Feliz" and "Cor" albums. Concerts in the year 2000 were performed in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Washington, Paris, Rio, Munich, Berlin, Weimar, Grorizia, Dublin, and of course in many places in Portugal.

Jazz Pianists
It is observed that the whole history of jazz can be read through the chart of the stylistic development of the pianists. They started it all and other instrumentalists use the techniques which they developed. Even if the pianist is not the star, he is a kind of an aristocrat. He is practically alone and can manage by himself if necessary. Over the years, respect for the role of the jazz pianist has increased. This page will eventually be more descriptive and include many more pianists. I am gradually writing more on people and gathering links. If you would like me to hurry up on one person in particular that you see below, let me know. Tell me who I need to add to this list!!! Send me links, anecdotes, samples of their work, anything.. And yes, you can nominate yourself to be on here. This list is for any jazz pianist. Thanks to all of you who have already submitted information and links!!!

COMING ON THE HUDSON LOCOMOTIVE WORK ... LIGHT BLUE This is a Monk collection by a Germany pianist/composer Alexander von Schlippenbach with a Japanese bassist Ino Nobuyoshi and Sunny Murray. Ino has often played with Schlippenbach's wife Takase Aki for long time. Moreover, his motifs arise as if born of themselves; self-perpetuating melodic lines and thematic thoughts in a free atonality, that allow playing outside the form, just as they also permit a return to the form. First, cautious steps on the way to imporivisation - more over an abstraction of the thematic though than over the changes. There are musically-grounded impulses that lead particular pieces in this direction.
