Performing Arts Library International Piano Archives at Maryland Buyer's Guide CAMILLE SAINT-SAËNS (1835-1921) In 1904 and 1919 Saint-Saëns recorded various selections from his own works. All of these discs have been transferred to APR 5533 (coupled with Cécile Chaminade’s 1901 recordings). APR’s transfers here, however, have been criticized as falling somewhat short of ideal. OLGA SAMAROFF (1882-1948) A pupil of Ernest Hutcheson and of Alkan’s illegitimate son Elie Delaborde, Samaroff (originally Lucy Hickenlooper) went on to teach such eminent players as Kapell, Lewenthal, and Weissenberg. She recorded many discs for Victor between 1921 and 1930. Almost all of them can be obtained on PEARL OPAL 9860. A further Samaroff disc, of the Grieg Nocturne, is included in SIMAX 1809 (“Grieg Piano Music in Historic Interpretations”). HAROLD SAMUEL (1879-1937) Remembered mainly as a leading Bach interpreter, this British pianist’s nearly complete recordings were once available in KOCH 3-7137 (two discs). A recent SYMPOSIUM CD (1309) is self-described as “the complete solo [Bach] piano recordings (1923-1931)” but this is not correct; it omits two Preludes and Fugues. Furthermore, the transfers are noisy and the documentation ignores issue numbers and timings. Samuel joined forces with violinist Isolde Menges on 78rpm sets of the Brahms A Major and D Minor Sonatas; these were reissued on BIDDULPH LAB 076. JÉSUS MARIA SANROMÁ (1902-1984) Born in Puerto Rico, Sanromá made many records for RCA Victor in the final decade or so of the 78rpm era. Two Pearl CDs (0076 and 0123) offer a good cross-section of his playing, with concerti by MacDowell, Paderewski and Gershwin, Liszt’s “Totentanz”, and other works. On PEARL 9020, Sanromá plays the Stravinsky Capriccio (conducted by Koussevitzky), while BIDDULPH LAB 052/3 includes the Schumann Quintet with Sanromá and the Primrose Quartet. His collaboration with Paul Hindemith in four-hand and viola sonatas by the latter is represented in BIDDULPH LAB 087.

Back to Intro Sergio Fiorentino Memorial Site II S E R G I O F I O R E N T I N O pianist musician Reactions to his concerts appearances Tuesday night in The Breakers Fiorentino opened the Newport Festival by making his first American appearance in 43 years. A courtly gentleman with an aureole of white hair, Fiorentino looks like a pianist in an old movie - or like photographs of the German pianist Wilhelm Kempff. Fiorentino, like Horowitz or Dubravka Tomsic, is undemonstrative at the keyboard; he doesn't have time for theater, because there is so much color and drama in the actual playing. The first half of the recital was "serious", the second devoted to entertainment - but these are false distinctions. Fiorentino's performance of the Schumann "Fantasy" was architecturally sound, but it was also full of darting, unexspected departures and a sense of play. And like the great pianists of the past, Fiorentino doesn't play transcriptions of waltzes to show off his virtuosity but to celebrate the waltz in all its intricate, teasing glory. The waltzes were the Liszt version of the Kermesse from Gounod's "Faust", Fiorentino's transcriptions of a Tchaikovsky waltz and a sequence of waltzes from "Der Rosenkavalier", Tausig's transcription of Strauss' "Man lebt nur einmal!" and the masterpiece fo the genre, Godowsky's "Symphonic Metamor- phoses on Themes from Die Fledermaus". Fiorentino neatly discriminated among the various national styles; and his iridescent scales, glissandi, arpeggios, chords, double notes, and octaves, his opalescent shifting harmonies, and his superbly secure and supple rhythmic sense wre not virtuoso tricks but ornaments devised to dramatize the curve of each dance in delirious movement.

Bela Bartók , compositor húngaro contemporâneo de Férenczi A giant of 20th century music, Bela Bartók was a brilliant and original composer who drew inspiration from both his classical contemporaries - most notably Wagner and Strauss - and the folk melodies of his homeland. A pianist, theorist, music historian and teacher, Bartók wrote primarily for instruments rather than for voices, and over the course of his career revolutionized virtually every concept of tonality (or lack thereof) in existence. Bartok started his professional career as a pianist, and made several successful tours of the European continent after his graduation from the Academy in 1902. He did not pursue composition as a primary activity until after his appointment to the piano faculty at the Budapest Academy in 1907. From this time on, he wrote reams of orchestral, chamber and solo music, taught theory, and performed solo recitals and concert engagements throughout Europe and in the United States. Bartok wrote a large volume of piano works, most notably the brilliant Mikrokosmos (1926-37), a six-book collection of piano teaching pieces which, although simple in form, show his genius as a harmonic and rhythmic innovator. He also wrote a wealth of chamber music; his six string quartets are absolute masterpieces of structure and balance, more so than any works since the music of Mozart and Haydn. In these quartets, Bartok used an original system of tonal organization which drew as much from the non-Western scales of Hungarian folk music as it did from any traditional sense of tonality. Each quartet is a unique marvel of simple melodies, rough dissonances, rhythmic complexity and harmonic abstraction.

At the same time he was a minister of the Netherlands Reformed Church until 1980. In this year Van den Heuvel became involved in broadcasting. After being chairman of the VARA broadcasting society until 1985 he was executive vice president for programme for radio en television to the Netherlands Broadcasting System. After this period Albert van den Heuvel has been active as chairman of the Max Havelaar Foundation and the NES Theater Foundation, and international president of the World Association of Christian Communication. Imre Antal Hungary Imre Antal was born in Hungary in 1935, and began to play the piano at the age of twelve. After studies at the Liszt Ferenc Musical Academy in Budapest he was a soloist with the Philharmonia Hungarica for many years. His father, Alexander V Amfitheatrof [1862-1938], was a noted historian and writer. His mother, Illaria (Sokolof), an accomplished singer and pianist, had studied privately with Rimsky-Korsakoff. The composer's early life was one of extreme hardship. In January 1902, at the age of three months, he was removed to Siberia, where his father was imprisoned for publishing anti-Czarist articles. In 1904 the authorities returned the family to St Petersburg, following which they migrated to Italy. At the age of six he began music studies with his mother.

HEITOR VILLA-LOBOS by Dr David C F Wright I have often heard it said that Villa-Lobos wrote too much music and the implication is that he never made time to construct a masterpiece! But prolific outputs are known throughout the history of music and it could be said that people such as Haydn and Mozart produced so much that not all of it is of the highest standard or appeal. Villa-Lobos would say that composition was not necessarily inspiration but a therapeutic necessity. If he did not compose he was ill. He simply had to write music. Villa-Lobos was an ordinary man. It may be true to say that he was quaint or homely. He was not an arrogant man but a very hard-working musician. He pottered around his house with his hair all over the place, wearing curious slippers and often with an overweight cigar in his mouth. He also had domestic skills and one of the few composers who had a winning personality that both made and kept friends. His mother, Noemia Umbelina was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1859 whereas his father, Raul, was born in 1862. Their marriage took place in 1884. Their first child, Bertha, known as Lulucha, was born in 1885. Heitor was born on the 5th March 1887 the year before slavery was abolished in Brazil. Carmen, nicknamed Bilita, was born in 1888. On 17th January 1889 Carmen and Heitor were baptised at Sao Jose Church in Rio de Janeiro. Later that year Brazil was declared a republic.

James Tocco Professor für Klavier, Kammermusik Der Pianist James Tocco hat sich weltweit einen Namen gemacht als Solist, in Konzerten mit Orchester, in Kammermusikensembles und als Pädagoge. Sein Repertoire von mehr als 50 Werken mit Orchester umfaßt praktisch das gesamte Standardrepertoire der Klavierkonzerte, daneben auch seltener gespielte Werke wie die Symphonie Concertante von Szymanowski, das Kammerkonzert von Alban Berg sowie The Age of Anxiety von Leonard Bernstein. Er wird für seine Interpretationen der Solo-Klavierliteratur von Beethoven, Chopin und Liszt genauso gerühmt wie für die Aufführungen von Kompositionen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er gehört zu den wenigen Pianisten, die regelmäßig die Klavierwerke von Händel in ihre Programme aufnehmen. James Tocco wurde als Sohn italienischer Eltern in Detroit geboren. Seit frühester Kindheit gehört seine große Liebe der Musik und ganz besonders der Oper. Mit sechs Jahren erhielt er den ersten Klavierunterricht, und bereits mit zwölf Jahren spielte er das erste Mal als Solist mit Orchester (Klavierkonzert Nr. 2 von Beethoven). In der Folgezeit gewann er mehrere Preise, so auch ein Stipendium für Studien am Mozarteum in Salzburg und ein weiteres der französischen Regierung, das ihm das Studium bei Magda Tagliaferro in Paris ermöglichte. Seine musikalische Ausbildung schloß er bei Claudio Arrau in New York ab. Mehrere Schallplatten- und CD-Einspielungen geben Zeugnis von James Toccos musikalischer Vielseitigkeit. Bei ProArte sind erschienen Soloklavierwerke von Leonard Bernstein (die erste Gesamtaufnahme), sowie verschiedene Werke von Aaron Copland, einschließlich der erstmalig aufgenommenen Klavierfassung der Suite aus Rodeo. Für Gasparo hat er die Préludes von Chopin komplett aufgenommen, ebenso das Gesamtklavierwerk von Charles Tomlinson Griffes und die vier Klaviersonaten von Edward MacDowell. Von Gidon Kremers Lockenhaus-Festival hat die Firma ECM seine Live-Aufführung der Cinq Etudes de Jazz von Erwin Schulhof herausgegeben. Kürzlich hat die Deutsche Harmonia Mundi seine Aufnahme der gesamten Transkriptionen von Liszt der großen Bachschen Orgelwerke herausgegeben.
