This Juilliard-trained musician also represented the U.S.A. in international piano competitions in Moscow and Warsaw to critical acclaim. His major teachers were, Jorge Bolet (Indiana University), Ozan Marsh (University of Arizona) and Sascha Gorodnitzki (Juilliard), and he also worked with Louis Kentner in London. Since mid-1990, David has become known to millions of radio listeners through his live call-in request shows. From his home in West Bloomfield, MI, David plays live on radio stations from coast to coast, and has been heard in every major market in the country. His Gershwin concert with the Mexico City Symphony is shown repeatedly on and ARTS TV stations (it is in rotation and is seen virtually every night somewhere in the U.S and Mexico). A concern for local residents
A fast-moving train reaches the railroad crossing on Sweetwater Road just north of Highway 118. Area residents are concerned about the potential for problems should a train ever have a mishap at the crossing, since it is the only road in and out of Iyanbito.

    Iyanbito Road could get facelift
    Bill Donovan
Staff Writer "The roads here are really, really bad, especially when it gets muddy," said William Charleston, a resident of this small Navajo community just east of Gallup who has spent a great deal of his time in the past decade complaining about road conditions in his chapter. While bad roads are the norm in many chapters on or near the Navajo Reservation, even county officials admit that Iyanbito may have some of the worst roads in the county, with the plight of local drivers made even worst by the fact that there is only one road in and out of the chapter.

    M. Robert Syme Rabbi was champion of families
March 12, 2003 BY CECIL ANGEL
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER Rabbi M. Robert Syme, a soft-spoken advocate for youth and strong families who served as a rabbi at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield for nearly 47 years, died Tuesday. He was 82. Rabbi Syme died of cancer at his son David's home in West Bloomfield. In his years at Temple Israel, Rabbi Syme saw the congregation grow into the largest in the metro area and one of the largest in the country. His personable sermons and his wise counsel helped the congregation grow to its current 12,000 members. As a rabbi, he believed his first obligation was to counsel, to make lives better. He made himself available to anyone who needed him regardless of their religion and almost at any time, those who knew him said. Despite the rapidly growing Temple Israel, big congregations concerned him a little. "Take a congregation. If I had my way, no congregation would number more than 400 or 500 people. That way, people would know their rabbi, their minister or their priest," Rabbi Syme said in a 1959 Free Press article. Emily Arnold, a member of Temple Israel, who recalled when Rabbi Syme arrived in Detroit 1953, said, "He was just a warm person, a very caring person."

Bulletin Correspondent Michigan pianist David Syme has played Chopin in Warsaw, Tchaikovsky in Moscow and "Amazing Grace" in a Kentucky Baptist church. Son of one rabbi and brother of another, the Juilliard graduate spent the early part of his career consciously moving away from his roots, working as a classical pianist, rock band member and radio host. He made his Detroit Symphony debut at age 18. "I didn't want to explore Jewish music," he has said. "I thought I was unique in my rebellion but I found that Jewish history is filled with examples of people leaving the nest in order to find their identity." Now in his mid-40s, Syme has come home, marrying his classical training with the traditions of his people in a one-man show, "Jewish Roots and the Classics," which he performs at synagogues and JCCs nationwide. His CD "Jewish Music Then and Now" amplifies that theme. Part of a discography that encompasses everything from Gershwin to love songs to rock (one recording has the intriguing title, "Pumping Ivory"), his piano arrangements run the gamut from classic to klezmer.

His vocal rendition of the High Holy Day prayer "Avinu Malkenu" is sincere but we've all heard it done better in shul.

    2001-2002 Entertainment Guide: Classical music
September 20, 2001 BY MARK STRYKER
FREE PRESS COLUMNIST Classical critics complain so incessantly about the lack of risk-taking among orchestras, opera companies, chamber music series and other concert presenters that timidness now seems more a fact of life than a reversible trend. This season in metro Detroit, however, a number of groups are going out on a limb with off-the-beaten-path ideas that should make concert-going more of an adventure than it's been in recent years. Take, for example, the University Musical Society, which is exploring the interaction of chamber music and literature. Two programs combine music and readings, pairing poet Robert Pinsky with the Takacs Quartet and poet Mark Strand with the Brentano Quartet. The Da Camera of Houston also presents multimedia programs re-creating the worlds of Proust and Baudelaire. Michigan Opera Theatre features three new productions in the most ambitious (and expensive) menu in MOT history, including "Carmen" and "The Marriage of Figaro" and a truly nonmainstream risk, Armen Tigranian's "Anoush," sung in Armenian. To put an exclamation point on MOT's artistic adventure this season, the other two operas on the schedule Verdi's "Otello" and Delibes' "Lakme" are both making their first appearance in the company's repertoire.
