Sultanov `can't remember a time he didn't know' Tchaikovsky concerto Web posted February 14, 1997 Event information By Bill Syken
Staff Writer International star pianist Alexei Sultanov will perform one of the most popular works in classical music Saturday with the Augusta Symphony. He will play Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in b minor, a work he has performed in concert since his early youth not that long ago. Mr. Sultanov, born in Uzbekistan, first garnered the attention of the music world for winning the 1989 Van Cliburn International Competition at age 19. Since then he has toured extensively, appearing across Europe and with American symphonies in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Milwaukee, Atlanta and many other cities. He recorded the Tchaikovsky concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra for the Teldec label. He has said in interviews that he ``can't remember a time he didn't know'' the Tchaikovsky concerto, and that it is one of his favorite pieces as well as that of the audience. The Augusta Symphony concert will also include Dances of Galanta by Zoltan Kodaly and Afro-American Symphony by Still, in honor of Black History Month.

Medal-winning Cliburn pianist Sultanov fighting his way back after stroke By Nancy Kruh
(c) The Dallas Morning News, 2001
FORT WORTH – For each of the 30 young musicians now vying in the 11th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, the event must seem the ultimate test: going head to head during 17 pressure-cooked days, trying to win the favor of the audience, critics and jury. But for Alexei Sultanov, the fiery Uzbekistani who took the gold medal at the 1989 Cliburn Competition, there are other tests unimaginably more difficult and only recently encountered. In late February, a massive stroke left the 31-year-old Fort Worth resident in a coma, near death. Days later, as he regained consciousness, doctors determined that he had lost the use of his left arm and leg. Financially devastated by mounting bills, he now makes his temporary home at the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation in Dallas, fighting to resurrect his limbs and his life as a concert pianist. "It's easy to get somebody back to work when all they have to do is move a box from Point A to Point B," says Dr. Mary Carlile, his physician at the institute. "But Alexei is brilliant. ... It's one of life's great tragedies and great ironies to have this devastating event happen to him."

Interview

British publisher Boxtree has paid roughly $724,200 for the rights to a novel written by Britney Spears and her mommy, Lynn. Spears' "Heart to Heart" autobiography sold more than 150,000 copies and Reuters reports that the manuscript for "A Mother's Gift" the story of a girl who wants to be a star is already complete. • Former rap star Chi-Ali Griffith was arrested in the Bronx last week after more than a year on the run from a second-degree murder charge. Thesource.com reports that Griffith, 23, was initially arrested on Jan. 14, 2000, for the murder of Sean Raymond, his girlfriend's brother. He had a loaded 9-mm handgun and a bulletproof vest at the time of his arrest. Police say Griffith shot Raymond five times after Raymond accused him of stealing some of his CDs and Griffith claimed that Raymond owed him $300.

One of the oldest competitions in the world. Initiated by Prof. Jerzy Zurawlew in 1927 and held every five years. The 13th competition took place in 1995; the first prize was not awarded, two second prize winners (Silver Medal plus $20,000) were Philippe Giusiano (France) and Alexei Sultanov (Russia). Special prizes for the best performances of polonaises, mazurkas and concertos were not awarded. The best Polish performer was Magdalena Lisak who won the sixth prize and $4,000. The next competition will take place in 2005. The competition is usually divided into four stages. In the first stage the contestants perform one nocturne and two etudes. Forty contestants appear in the second stage to perform one of the ballades, six consecutive preludes, a waltz and a polonaise. Fifteen contestants are admitted to the third stage; their program includes a cycle of mazurkas, and one sonata. In the final stage six contestants appear performing one of Chopin's piano concertos. 20. Feedback
alexei sultanov who played like on the own concert and our Rudenko (¹1 in my opinion),sultanov and Filippov will pick out at least one perspective pianist.
    http://www.mmv.ru/tchaikovsky/otziv/piano1eng.htm
Feedback After the playing of first 24 participants we can draw conclusion that the Russian participants are objectively stronger than all foreign participants who played this day. Whether the preliminary selection has given the results or the talented foreign pianists have stopped to come to the Tchaikovsky competition? I think we should address all these questions to the Selection board that have admitted such untalented persons to take part in the competition (we haven’t heard performings of such a low level for a long time already). Anyway, presently our pianists show quite different performance level. In the other hand, if one would like to appraise Russian participants abstractly or compare them with each other, it is indeed possible to have this or that claim to lay to every one of them. The lack of the musical initiative and of the personal playing is the main shortcoming. Anonymous Press-center information
I would like you tell about the brightest impressions of two days. As a rule we remember the best and the worst. I begin from the second ones. The playing of Firsov E. (USA), Ivanov A. (Belorusia), Erzhakovsky R.(Kazahstan), Lim Chong NG (Malaysia) was quiet outstanding. Galios from Greece is a leader in this category of amateurs (so-called). It was for the first time when I heard the whistle in the grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. He has a "typical" appearance: cross-shoes, crimson shirt and a sincere indignation. If such persons (I don't want to call them by right names) it would be better to give the possibility to take part in such prestige competition to the pupils of our musical school, they play better.
