Mamar Kassey is arguably the greatest band in Niger a nation that's just now catching up with musically prolific neighbors like Mali and Nigeria. Between 1974, when Seyni Kountche took power, and 1987, when he died, the government did zilch to cultivate the arts. After the dictator's death, Alassane Dante, a singer and former director of the national ballet, organized a competitive music festival from which sprang the Centre for Musical Training and Promotion, where musicians could learn about both native traditions and modern music. Mamar Kassey founder Yacouba Moumouni, then a ten-year-old shepherd's son, walked more than a hundred miles to get there, and worked as Dante's sister's houseboy in exchange for his education. He later joined the ballet and toured West Africa and Europe, and in France met world music producer Nick Gold, who invited him to play the seyse a reed flute on

C# Games Back when I used to lurk in borland.public.delphi.non-technical, the topic of What games are written in Delphi came up. I was looking at my VC++ and C# books this weekend, and wondered if anyone knew of any games (or any non-business or non-web) written in C# on the market or in production. Im a C# n00b as it were, but given that I keep hearing both C# is out there to replace Java and dont write BIG, graphics heavy games in Java(1), I was curious if C# had been used. Thanks! 1. I am not condemning Java or passing judgement, just repeating what I have heard during conversations about 3D games, virtual machines, and the XBox. New Career? Hi everyone. I believe Ive reached my limit. Im 25 and my career is quietly being destroyed. Ive been writing software professionaly since I was 19. Began with ASP and Visual Basic, moved to PHP and now Im doing Java/J2EE and C++. But current events, especially that entry on the NYTimes has made me think twice about where were going. So I decided to switch careers. Or at least I began to think about it. How do you guys feel about it? Going to college all over again and retrain myself. I had health care in mind, because its an area that has had a lack of professionals since ever. Any ideas? Opinions? Something. Do you have a passion for something? Go do that. You'll get by, somehow, and you'll be doing something you like.

WELL
by Lisa Kron
directed by Leigh Silverman
The centerpiece of this year's NEW WORK NOW! is a series of five sneak-peek in-process workshop presentations of Well. Are we responsible for our own illnesses? In this "solo play with other people in it," Lisa Kron explores this question, weaving stories from her stay in an "environmental ecology clinic," together with tales of her childhood in a racially integrated neighborhood which was "healed" from decline by her mother's community work. Kron is joined on stage by the character of her mother - who's not sure she wants to be in a play - and a chorus of four equally uncooperative actors.

Templul Coral, construit in 1832 (refacut in 1887), exista si astazi.

Friday, 04 June 2004 Tuey Connell Contributed by Andrea Canter Friday, 14 May 2004
Page 2 of 2 Artists’ Quarter . If you missed him there, don’t make that mistake again! Neal Miner (bass) is a native New Yorker who was immersed in jazz by his father, an avid jazz discographer. First studying music with drummer Eddie Locke at the Day School, Miner graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy, and briefly attended the Manhattan School of Music; his primary teachers were bassist Orin O'Brien of the New York Philharmonic and jazz bassist John Webber. In New York, Miner has played with many of the best of his generation, including Ryan Kisor, Brad Mehldau, and Eric Alexander, and for two years, had a weekly gig at Smalls. Know for his composition as well as his playing, “Neal brings the bass up front and makes it the focus of a relaxed but rhythmic musical universe… he allows the melody to sing, embellishing it inventively but not losing its essence in a flurry of irrelevant notes” (Sten Grynir, New York Stringer). Like Tuey Connell, drummer Joe Strasser has considerable experience working on TV and radio jingles. Since settling in New York, he has served as timekeeper for many of the young lions, including Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, and Eric Alexander, as well as such veteran titans as Ron Carter, Eddie Henderson, Jon Hendricks, and James Moody. Also known for his eclecticism, Strasser is co-leader of the funk band Hot-Pants and has taught at the New School University and the Stamford Jazz Workshop. His other groups have included a quartet with Etta James and trio with Ronnie Matthews and Walter Booker.
