Strauss, Johann, Jr. (Johann II)
Fledermaus (Die)

Glyndebourne's new production of the Waltz King's much-loved comic operetta takes its inspiration from Eisenstein's final words in the opera: 'Rosalinde! Forgive your poor Gabriel. You see, the champagne went to my head.' Indeed, this production stayed true to the original libretto and included the audience in the party by serving champagne during the supper scenes - no doubt delighting the audience as much in 2003 as it did at the premiere in 1874!

English version

Pianophiles are particularly excited about the return of the 48-year old Sokolov. As a youngster, Sokolov intended to become a conductor, then switched to piano. "When I was four I had my own little podium, a baton, and records and I used to 'conduct'," he told one interviewer. He started piano studies at 5, and at 16 he won the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition’s first prize and Gold Medal. His mentor at that time was Soviet pianist Emil Gilels, and his idols included Scriabin’s son-in-law Sofronitsky, Sergei Rachmaninov, Glenn Gould, Solomon, Dinu Lipatti, and Vladimir Horowitz. Despite many LP recordings on the Russian Melodiya label and a busy touring schedule, Sokolov remained a largely Soviet secret until the fall of the Iron Curtain. Sokolov’s highly personal interpretations reveal an original thinker, who is also a perfectionist. Sokolov disapproves of music lovers who go to concerts merely to relax. "A concert should be strong, hard, psychological work for both the performer and the audience," he asserts. Sokolov specializes in the romantics - Brahms, Chopin, and Beethoven - whom he considers to be his contemporaries. "Contemporary music is music that's alive now. Byrd and Bach are contemporary, but something written yesterday could be dead today." Join Sokolov at the Ladies Morning Musical Club, Pollack Hall, 555 Sherbrooke Street West, March 21, 15H30. Tel. (514) 932-6796/ 487-2822. Box office: (514) 398-4547. The same program will be repeated at the Club Musicale de Québec, Grand Théâtre de Québec, March 23, 20H00. Tel (418) 643-8131.

The Festival is founded by Hans-Christian Wille, as the director of the Kammermusikpodium – as it was called in those days – and his parents. The four concerts featuring exclusively chamber music led to the name of the Festival, Braunschweiger Kammermusikpodium (Brunswick Chamber Music Podium).
The programme of the 2nd Festival, taking place in the region of Brunswick and Wolfenbüttel, already consists of eight concerts. They are not only restricted to chamber music any more, but include two orchestra concerts, too.
The Braunschweiger Kammermusikpodium is growing rapidly. The third series of events consists of 22 concerts. The first master classes are organized and the special music festivals in the provinces are introduced. The first concert in the future state of Sachsen-Anhalt, at that time still part of the German Democratic Republic, takes place in the castle courtyard at Quedlinburg.
A total of 42 concerts are presented, twice as many as in 1990. The region where concerts are performed is extended and now also includes Sachsen-Anhalt.
With the 5th Festival the Kammermusikpodium has reached its peak, 61 concerts and events in the region of Brunswick and Magdeburg. Apart from concert halls the Festival now uses different historical sites and various attractive places in the region. The sheepfold of the manor of the Earls von der Schulenburg e.g. is established as a concert hall with a piano recital by Ivo Pogorelich.

The St.Petersburg State Conservatory, the first public school of music in Russia was inaugurated on September, 20th, 1862. The foundation of the Conservatory crowned the efforts of a group of progressive-minded musicians of the XIX century. It boasts Anton Rubinstein, Henrick Wieniawski, Karl Schubert, Gavriil Lomakin as founding members.
Another important period in the development of the Conservatory lay between the years 1905-1928, when it was headed by Glazunov. Having come into the office in 1905, this distinguished musician and remarkable man remained the heart and soul of the Conservatory, its professional and moral symbol for nearly a quarter of a century.
The illustrious musicians, who were members of the professorial staff then, were Leopold Auer (violin); Nikolay Tcherepnin (conducting); Anatoly Lyadov, Alexander Glazunov and Maximilian Steinberg (composition); Anna Yessipova, Sergey Lyapunov and Leonid Nikolayev (piano). Many of their pupils won world acclaim. The legendary alumni are the composers Nikolay Myaskovsky, Sergey Prokofiev, Dmitry Shostakovich; violinist Jascha Heifetz, Miron Polyakin, Efrem Zimbalist, Yuri Eidlin; pianists Samary Savshinsky, Nadezhda Golubovskaya, Vladimir Sofronitsky; conductors Nikolay Malko, Mikhail Klimov. All of them made an outstanding contribution to the world musical culture.
