Grigory Sokolov Live in Paris,
Recital at Th na ive DVD DR 2108 AV 127 [2 hours] and on CD live from his annual tours in 1985-1992 This DVD is a wonderful opportunity to get to terms with a controversial "cult" pianist at his best. His recordings from live concerts (many of them unofficial) are sought after; see the dedicated Sokolov website . Grigory Sokolov dislikes studio recording. The Paris recital of 2002 is filmed sensitively and undistractingly by Bruno Monsaingeon, who provides a useful note about the project, and the sound quality is superb.
Sokolov prepares and perfects a single programme each season, repeating and honing it to perfection throughout his long annual touring schedule. He is clearly at his best in a large auditorium and there were reservations about his recent appearance in London's Wigmore Hall, with critics seriously at odds with one another (q.v. reviews in The Times and ). His manner evinces disinterest in his audience, which contributes to the polarisation of reactions. Sokolov, whom I

He did not seem to have anything special or coherent to say in this music. It was romantic, with build-ups of crescendi, as if an organist was using (anachronistically) a swell box; the audience seemed to have loved it, which must be the main thing. I should have been more sympathetic and interested if Sokolov had opted for historic Bach arrangements, perhaps some of Busoni's or Siloti's; an area explored so fruitfully explored by Angela Hewitt.

Pianist
A pianist is a person who plays the piano . A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists . A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ludwig van Beethoven Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin ... Robert Schumann , and Sergei Rachmaninov were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including jazz classical music , and all sorts of popular music . cd 2: 55'33 Comments: Omri Tal said: Very mature and contemplative performance! Jan Hanford said: This recording gave me a headache. Sokolov is an excellent pianist but he plays too loudly, or perhaps it was the piano which clanged a lot. He also does not play legato, he plays almost staccato with space between each note. This kind of choppy playing is no doubt extremely difficult, but I found it unpleasant to listen to. In some respects it was much like Glenn Gould (who I cannot tolerate), although Sokolov's performance did have somewhat of an emotional side. Overall, the performance was harsh to my ears, rather than energetic. There were some slower and quieter passages but they seemed to drag and, even then, the sound of the piano was not particularly pleasant. The booklet does not indicate what kind of piano was used. I've read several very positive reviews of this cd so perhaps it just isn't my style. The inclusion of only one Partita is pointless. I'm not one of those people who thinks it's important to fill up every cd. Rather, I think it's important to present an appropriate program, regardless of the length. Not just fill up a cd because they can.
