Grigory Sokolov
Pianist
" There are times when the public becomes anxious in the hall until he finally appears. One imagines Grigory Sokolov walking up and down in the artists' room, the score in his hands, trying until the very last moment to extract the most intimate phrase from the composer's page and quite forgetting that he has to play in front of a public that is longing to hear him. His concentration is total, and sooner or later he strides in, standing upright and heading consciously for the piano. Without any smile or wide-ranging gestures, he simply arrives, sits down and starts playing, and from the very first note it is pure music". He was born in 1950 in St. Petersburg , at a time when the unhindered development of a career was not to be thought of. His early education was at a special music school, but he soon entered the Leningrad Conservatory , and gave his first public recital at 12. In 1966 (aged 16) he won one of the most famous competitions, the Tchaikovsky, in Moscow

Bach, Brahms, Beethoven : Grigory Sokolov (piano), Wigmore Hall, 17th January 2004 (H-T W)
The concert should have taken place in the Barbican Hall with its ideal conditions for recitals, or at least in the Queen Elizabeth Hall. In both venues one can create the intimacy Sokolov prefers with dimmed light around him. But it was also Sokolov himself who turned the recital into a farce. I felt like being confronted with a Golem, built from clay and given life by the great composers of the past to save them from a new generation of musical rapists. Instead, he turned on them - gentle, but extremely hungry, as it seemed – and consumed their work entirely for his own purpose of self-glorification. Every artist has the right, to distil and to find different ways of expression as long as he serves the composer. In this case, I had a sleepless night. How far is one allowed, to identify oneself with a genius? One has to perceive him fully and then treat him with modesty, respect and honesty leaving one’s ego behind, trusting the composer’s intention and lighting his flame by recreating his own spirit. The most convincing example may forever be Clara Haskil.

Haydn, Komitas, Prokofiev: Grigory Sokolov (piano). Queen Elizabeth Hall, Sunday, February 10th, 2002 (CC).
Grigory Sokolov is a remarkable musician. His sheer force of personality and the integrity of his interpretations go hand-in-hand with playing of tremendous ardour to leave one breathless with admiration. The programme reflected Sokolov’s wide repertoire. He plays with the lights firmly down so that attention is focussed purely on the musical expression: no reading of the programme notes while the concert is in progress here. This certainly served to lend an intimacy to his Haydn. The long first half was taken up by three sonatas by this composer: F, HobXVI:23; D, HobXVI:27; E minor, HobXVI:34. It was an arrangement that worked well, the restrained F major working its way to the grander, almost Romantic E minor via the quirky (and sometimes quasi-orchestral) D major. Sokolov was able to bring the audience in to Haydn’s world immediately. If one was in awe at his superbly even touch in the first sonata, it was wit that was to the fore in the second. The presto first movement of the E minor was determined in approach. Throughout these Sonatas, Sokolov did not let the momentum of concentration slip for a moment, an impression enhanced by his tendency to hunch over the keyboard; in fact, the only threat to this concentration came from that scourge of modern society, the unmuted mobile telephone.
