GRIGORY SOKOLOV Piano biography Since his introduction to the UK at the Edinburgh Festival in 1990 (Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 3, Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra/Lazarev) Grigory Sokolov has made an astonishing impact on British audiences; his subsequent performances here have included the Philharmonia, Royal Scottish National, BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony, Hallé and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestras. He has twice performed at the Proms, and has given recitals at the Wigmore Hall, Edinburgh Festival, Aldeburgh (Snape Maltings), Cheltenham Festival, Birmingham, Dublin (National Concert Hall) and the South Bank Centre. Even by the age of five Grigory Sokolov had attracted the attention of the Russian music world through his extraordinary and precocious talent. Born in Leningrad, he was educated at a specialist music school and entered the Leningrad Conservatory in 1960. He made his first important public appearance at the age of 12, and in 1966, aged 16, he gained international recognition by winning first prize at the third International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition : a unanimous decision from a jury headed by Emil Gilels. His success was followed by tours with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra to Italy, Portugal and Germany which led to further appearances throughout Europe, North America and the Far East.
