Recent Projects

I've had the pleasure to master a number of outstanding projects during the year. Here is a sampling of what's been going on: Madeleine Shapiro, A Solo CD
I'm very honored to be producing and recording Madeleine Shapiro's upcoming solo cello CD which will be released later this year on Capstone Records. About a third of the album has been recorded and the CD promises to be a fascinating collection of new cello works written either for Ms. Shapiro or pieces with which Ms. Shapiro has great empathy. Paul Krieder and The Composers
I'm also honored to be producing a new CD of tenor Paul Krieder. His CD for ECS Publishing will include works of David Del Tredici, Ned Rorem, Daron Hagen and Virko Baley. Featured on each piece is the composer playing piano! It's been a very exciting CD to work on and each piece has posed very different challenges. Bob Schunemann from Arsis Recording is the executive producer on the album. Bob first approached me to do the album looking for a space in New York to record. He was pleased to find me and the whole project has been just such an honor working with each of the composers and Paul Krieder. I can't say enough good things about ECS Publishing in Bostonthey are doing some great new CD's and working hard to get New Music out there on great recordings. I've been honored with a Restoration project from The Eastman School: The John Graham Anthology John Graham was one of the most remarkable violists of the 20th Centuryone whose premieres and work stretched across the whole of 20th Century compositional styles. This double-CD issue will feature the highlights over the last 30 years of John's New Music recordings including works by Milton Babbitt, Benjamin Britton, Stravinsky and many others.

Waylon, Willie and Elvis
An Interview with Legendary Producer Chips Moman
by Allen Smith
September 2001 Legendary producer Chips Moman's credits read like a "Who's Who" of American music. Consider just a few of his accomplishments:
* played lead guitar on Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved A Man" and co - wrote (with Dan Penn) Aretha's "Do Right Woman."
* wrote "Luckenbach, Texas" for Waylon Jennings and subsequently produced hit recordings for (among others) Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Roy Orbison. Having achieved all this, you'd think he'd have earned the right to brag! But that's not his nature - he's more comfortable talking about (and praising) the musicians and artists he's worked with. GRITZ spoke with Chips about his illustrious career in music.
You hitchhiked to Memphis at age 14. What made you go to Memphis? I had an aunt living there at the time and her son was in the painting business. I went there in hopes of getting a job painting. But it didn't turn out that way!

Opening Reception (with B.J. Ward)
Presented by Summit Records
Wednesday, February 5, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Tony Monaco has been playing music since he was eight years old. When he was twelve, He was given a Jimmy Smith album and instantly knew that Jazz Organ was his calling. Tony began to play in Jazz night clubs around Columbus, Ohio while he was still learning the art of the Hammond B3 organ. He was influenced by hometown Organists such as Hank Marr and Don Patterson. Tony's newfound fascination led him to jazz organ legends Jimmy McGriff, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Charles Earland, Jack McDuff, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Here He found an unlimited source of inspiration; he just couldn't get enough! On Tony's sixteenth birthday, he received a return phone call from Jimmy Smith. This was a great honor and really boosted his enthusiasm as an organist. Jimmy Smith continued to give Tony Jazz Organ secrets over the phone while Tony was playing around Columbus. When he was twenty, Jimmy Smith invited Tony to come play with him at his club in Woodland Hills L.A., California.

JAMES BOOKER Night Train 2006 A Taste Of Honey, Live In New Orleans 1977 Night Train's second double CD of live recordings by this idiosyncratic genius of New Orleans features 30 sides recorded in 1977. It will mostly appeal to hard core Bookerphiles since most of the songs are available in better versions elsewhere and in some cases there are three versions of the same song on this collection. Sound quality is variable ranging from very good to pretty bad - though none of it unlistenable. That being said the true fan will appreciate the different approaches he takes to the songs including a fascinating 10 minute version of Classified complete with a crazed lengthy rap and his dazzling piano work accompanying Cyril Neville on St. James Infirmary
