presents Dan Franklin Smith, pianist Saturday, January 11, 2003 DAN FRANKLIN SMITH was born in Lakewood, Ohio, outside Cleveland. He graduated as a piano major from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he studied with Benning Dexter and later in New York, with Constance Keene. In 1997, he made his European debut as solo recitalist in Sweden, at Mariefred Kyrkan, where he received a standing ovation and was hailed by the reviewer as "unequivocally one of the most brilliant pianists I have had the pleasure of hearing and reviewing!" The following year, in October 1998, he made his European orchestral debut in Stockholm playing Kurt Atterberg's famously difficult Piano Concerto, Op. 37. Svenska Dagbladet reviewed the performance in Stockholm's Sofia Kyrkan as "more than anyone could wish for." And Swedish TV's classical music program Musikspegein (music mirror) featured the performance, the concerto, and Mr. Smith on a broadcast throughout Sweden soon after the performance. As a result of this performance, he was engaged by Sterling Grammofonskivor in 1999 to record the Atterberg concerto with the Gdvie Symfoniorkester, a worldwide premiere. It was released in September and soon after, he was invited by Swedish Radio's classical music station to record a half hour of Swedish solo piano pieces, which was broadcast throughout Sweden. The reviews of Mr. Smith's first CD were outstanding. BBC Music Magazine called him "a glorious soloist" in their March 2000 issue. That same month

ARTHUR HINTON’S PIANO CONCERTO, Lambeth Orchestra, Christopher Fifield, March 2002 (LF) At St Luke’s, West Norwood on Saturday 23 March 2002, the Lambeth Orchestra and their conductor Christopher Fifield were joined by the American pianist Dan Franklin Smith for the revival of the four movement Piano Concerto in D minor by Arthur Hinton (1869-1941), which ran for around 31 minutes. Hinton’s birth and death dates give us the clue: he is the exact contemporary of Walford Davies, and although one encounters his name from time to time in connection with the musical scene at the beginning of the twentieth century, other than some piano miniatures played literally decades ago by Frank Laffitte, I cannot remember having heard anything by him before, though he has long been on my list of names to explore. The Piano Quintet, Violin Sonata and a programmatic piano suite A Summer Pilgrimage in the White Mountains (all published) look comparatively inexpensive and rewarding ways to explore further.

From 1961 until 1971 he studied with Frank Mannheimer , especially during his renowned series of summer sessions in Duluth, Minnesota. Mr. Adams has played on many important series throughout the USA, and during the 1970s made many tours for the United States Information Service in South America, Spain, Italy, and Central America. He made an extensive tour for Gioventu Musicale throughout Italy in 1976 and in 1978 he made his New York debut with an all-French program in Carnegie Recital Hall. On Feb. 7-9, the "International Conference on Gandhian Alternative to War and Terrorism" was held at Gandhi Bhavan, Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, India. Peace researchers and activists gathered from around the globe to examine this era of "new war" that has followed the terrorist attacks in the United States, and to search for a
means to build a world of peace and nonviolence. SGI President Ikeda sent a message to the conference that was read before the full assembly. Indian president Kocheril Raman Narayanan, vice president Krishna Kant, and former Indian president R. Venkataraman also sent messages in support of the event. The conference was sponsored by the International Center of Gandhian Studies and Research (Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti), in association with the G. Ramachandran Institute of Nonviolence and other organizations. In his message, President Ikeda introduced words of optimism and hope from Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. President Ikeda noted that these two champions of nonviolence always maintained an optimistic attitude because of their abiding faith in the limitless capacity of the power of the human spirit. Also, President Ikeda observed that the violent nature inherent in contemporary civilization stems from structural and cultural violence. The key to opening the door to a century of peace and nonviolence, he asserted, lies in the example of Gandhi's nonviolent struggle.
