As a painter applies colour to a canvas, Linda Shumas shapes music. Her pallette is rich in hue, drawing on influences, both ethnic and cultural. Through her pictures Linda at times speaks softly, at other times boldly, and at all times preserves the importance of melody and emotion.
A native of West Vancouver, Linda has been playing piano since the age of seven. Although she holds a degree in piano performance from University of Victoria and studied composition at Vancouver City College, she considers herself to be largely self-taught. She recieved the Jean Couthard Prize for original composition in 1978, before she had studied composition formally. Linda conjures a unique style of structured improvisation that harkens to the lyricism of Chopin and Liszt.

Nick Peros, Motets (PHX 0878-2)
Motets is the world premiere recording of 20 a cappella choral works by composer Nick Peros, performed by The Renaissance Singers, conducted by Richard Cunningham. The Motets are powerful works of beauty, power and passion, deeply expressive pieces characterized by flowing melody and rich harmonies, works of the highest artistry. Each motet is unique, presenting a wide range of musical expression where whispers of tenderness give way to an exuberant exultation in sound. Nick Peros shows himself to be a consummate composer in these works, easily handling multi-part textures of rich polyphony, creating what can be described as a tapestry of sound. This is wonderful music, music that speaks to the heart, beautifully performed by The Renaissance Singers. Nick Peros- Motets is a superb recording of great new choral works which will become an essential part of any music lovers collection. The CD Motets , on Phoenix Records, is the debut recording of works by Nick Peros.

John S. Gray, Linda Shumas, the ensemble Floating World plus guest performer.
Composer Gray returns to the Music Gallery after a 20-year absence, now with Floating World. Gray’s works from his exile years on the Nova Scotian coast finally surface, two of them premieres. Pianist Shumas will perform Gray’s 1997 Fantasie, Minuet and Trio. A young composer-performer from the National Capital Region will make a surprise appearance at this event.
Words of John S. Gray:
Chronologically, the FANTASIE, MINUET and TRIO overlaps the AUTUMN PRELUDE, and indeed it might be fair to consider the little trio a diversion project from the massive solo piano work. I had no intention to write a work for solo piano until composer and broadcaster David Jaeger made the suggestion in 1995. For better or worse, this piece was from the very outset intended to be performed by a strong virtuoso pianist and to be broadcast over the TWO NEW HOURS radio programme on CBC Radio Two (or CBC Stereo, as it was then, and still sometimes i think of it that way).
But the connection with TWO NEW HOURS, and even a cash stipend for the commission, set up many expectations. This piece was written for the ears of other composers, rather than for the audience. It is by far the most difficult work that I have ever produced, or am likely to. Composer Steve Tittle saw the score of this work in its early stages and predicted that nobody would be able to plat it.

(from The Tale of Maureen) The Moors for Albeniz Ruins Voices from the Cloisters ... Lullabye for Jessye Norman Bonus "Through the cutlines reads classical, this isn't a collection of minatures from the classica, at least not yet; the compositions are, save an encore by Bach, all by Miss. Shumas, they could become classics after a passage of time, but for now they're original, wonderfully fresh, and well worth custom. The question begged after listening to the alum is whether Linda Shumas is a tasteful composer who plays beautifully, or a fine pianist with a gift for delicate, all evocative of the titles such as The Moors, Dance of the Anemones, and the cover, to mention a few. Listening to them, one is mindful of Chopin and Debussy being performed by Alec Templeton. A kudo for Patricia Swan on Lullaby for Jessye Norman. This is an album that deserves to do well."
