Pianist comes home Tian Ying to show his eloquent,poetic kills By Lao Wang, Shanghai Star. 2000-09-19 MANY of Shanghai's gifted young musicians went abroad years ago to further their studies and seek international exposure. One of them is pianist Tian Ying. Winner of many prestigious awards, including high honours at the Eighth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1989, Tian Ying has become well-known for his eloquent, poetic and dramatically intense performances. He has appeared with numerous orchestras throughout the United States and abroad, including Rochester Philharmonic, Louisville Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, Ann Arbor Symphony, Shanghai Symphony and Hong Kong Philharmonic. His 1993 Bank of Boston Celebrity Series concert was chosen by the Boston Globe as one of the top ten classical music events. Born in Shanghai and educated in the US, Tian Ying made his first public appearance with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra at age 10. Her two poetry books, A Quiet Place and Ku Mountain, will be out in early 2001. In 1969 Layne received her degree in English from Chico State where she studied poetry and writing with George Keithley. She did post-graduate work in Religious Studies at CSU, Chico, and in the Arts and Religious Studies at Naropa Institute, Boulder, Colorado. Layne's poetry has appeared in many poetry journals since she began publishing her work in 1996. N O N F I C T I O N PIANO PIECES I n "Piano Pieces," Russell Sherman treats the piano much the same way Robert Pirsig handled Zen and motorcycles: with deep consideration and love. "The breath, prayers and libido of the fingertips must somehow be transferred to the neutral indifference of the key," Sherman writes, in this astonishingly quotable book; every page drops a golden prose apple. Fingers arc like "a team of wild huskies." The thumb is "the black sheep who is forbidden to roam on the black keys." The piano offers "rare aphrodisiacs of sound." A renowned classical pianist who teaches at the New England Conservatory of Music, Sherman comes at these 88 keys from the vantage of both performer and instructor. The book lacks a conventional narrative, opting instead for a butterfly strategy of quick exploration, then moving on. Hence the "Pieces" of the title; five sections enfold alightings on everything from the specific (the anatomy and musculature of playing) to the overarching (how music unlocks our hearts). The reader soon realizes Sherman's pedagogical style is holistic a term he would sneer at, having tagged himself "an old and unregenerate crust." (He's 66.) Here's his idea of homework, for instance: "I have asked one student to prepare a short discourse on the subject of chiaroscuro. . . another to. . . write an essay on the (plant) cycle, another to work up a list of twenty-five similes for the image of a samovar." Such careening well-roundedness informs the text. He made his solo debut at the age of 12 with the Christchurch Civic Orchestra, playing Mendelssohn's First Piano Concerto. He studied with Ernest Empson, a Godowsky pupil and later at the University of Otago with Maurice Till, who had been a student of Empson. He pursued his musical studies in the United Kingdom studying with Gordon Green. He had inspirational coachings with William Pleeth (cellist and teacher of Jacqueline Dupre) and with the Beaux Arts Trio. His Wigmore Hall debut was very well received and a successful career of solo and recital engagements in Europe, Scandinavia and North America followed. During his time in Europe, he recorded several times for the BBC and his recent release of piano music of Granados on the Meridian label received glowing reviews in the BBC music magazine. His playing was also featured in a Mozart Concerto on the popular New Zealand Symphony Orchestra/Concert FM release "Beauty Spot 2". back to Events YOUNG PIANIST'S BEETHOVEN COMPETITION Philosophy and Procedures The Young Pianist's Beethoven competition was founded in 1987 by Celia Méndez, a San José private piano teacher, with the purpose of being an artistic learning experience, a pedagogical tool for California High School students in the process of understanding the interpretation of Beethoven's piano sonatas. Consistent with this purpose, the "prize" of the competition is participation in a master class given to the three finalists by an internationally renown artist. Added awards are performing opportunities­such as the one offered in the past by the "Grand Piano" television program and presently by the Steinway Society The Bay Areaand a monetary prize, this last one having only an ancillary character. In order to emphasize the artistic-pedagogical tenets of this competition, the focus has been diverted from the order of placement (first, second and third place) to the recognition of overall artistic merit by selecting three award winners to participate in the master class without assigning them first, second or third places. The elements that determine the selection of the students are: individuality of interpretation, communication on an emotional level, general musicality, and stylistic understanding. Great performances are always individual, thoughtful, and touch the spirit. Although technical mastery is a "must," it should be reiterated that the true aim of this competition is to encourage performances of Beethoven's sonatas which reflect unique personal expression and which are original within the context of broad stylistic performance traditions. It should always be kept in mind that­as confirmed by recent scholarship­Beethoven's playing "was oriented toward the foal of emotional expression."
