Friends and an adopted son drive to the sea to carry out Jack Dodds' wish to have his ashes cast upon the waves. Along the way, in alternating first-person narratives, the living disclose predictable surprises and ponder the big questions what's it all about, anyway? While Swift deserves credit for trying to capture the day-to-day life of his lower-middle-class characters, the result is banal. The first-person voices are unconvincing, the competing narratives cumulatively unrevealing, and the pearls of wisdom paste. In this demotic novel, Swift grants his narrators the depth and complexity of characters in a television mini-series. Joseph Shea Blake
Peter Ackroyd
Alfred A. Knopf, $35
For all his inner fire and drama, William Blake lived a relatively uneventful life, and this turns out to be rather a blessing at a time when so many biographies (including Ackroyd's previous Dickens ) stifle the reader with superfluous facts. Ackroyd skillfully traces the larger outlines of Blake's life and underscores the consistency of his character: a more anxiety-ridden and self-destructive Blake than one expects, whose persistence in the face of adversity and misunderstanding comes to seem quietly heroic. Ackroyd treats Blake's visions and commerce with the spirit realm respectfully though he occasionally transposes them into a simpler, more psychological frame without shedding a great deal of light. Nor are his comments on the poetry especially helpful (he fares somewhat better with the art). His triumph, however, is his vivid evocation of working-class London "Human awful wonder of God," Blake's Jerusalem in all its chaotic, violent vitality. Against this background we see Blake as his contemporaries did: independent and puzzling and brilliant. A worthwhile book.

Ms. Paik has received critical acclaim for her "sublime musicianship" and "stunning virtuosity." Following her New York recital debut, The New York Times stated: "in programming as well as performance, one could hardly have asked more from a debut recital. Ms. Paik seemed every bit the major talent her advanced billing suggested." Following her Los Angeles debut in the Wilshire Ebell Theater critics noted that, "she was a sensitive and thinking musician first and an awesome technician second." Ms. Paik has appeared with leading orchestras including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the Japan Philharmonic, the Korean National Symphony, The National Symphony of Belgium, the city of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Warsaw Philharmonic and the Moscow State Philharmonic Orchestra. The Rock Hotel PianoFest took place in a greatly reduced form this season as a tribute to the great pianist and teacher Russell Sherman. The event ran from December 3-11 and featured performances by Russell Sherman along with Christopher Taylor, Haesun Paik, Randall Hodgkinson and Hung Kuan Chen. In what would seem to be a rather unprecedented move, BMG Classics has re-signed Benjamin Bagby and the Ensemble Sequentia to a new multi-cd contract. BMG has agreed to release Sequentia's newest CD entitled "Lost Songs of the Rhineland Harper". in France and Germany in the Spring and in the US in September 04 timed with a US Tour. BMG will also re-release at least a half dozen Sequentia recordings which have been out of the catalogue for at least four years Gilbert Hetherwick, the new Vice President and General Manager of BMG Classics, was doing research on former BMG artists, and in looking at the sales figures for Sequentia, could not quite understand why BMG dropped them in the first place. Noche Flamenca just finished a sold-out four week run at New York's Lucille Lortel Theater to incredible raves. This run was preceeded by a three week tour with stops in Boston, Pittsburgh, Nashville and Memphis with standing ovations and remarkable press.

    Better Mammograms
When "Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book" came out ten years ago, it was dubbed, "the bible for women with breast cancer." The book covered everything from mammograms to mastectomies. Dr. Love, then a surgeon in Boston, became one of the best-known and most controversial authorities on breast cancer. She roiled the waters by questioning, among other things, the widespread use mammograms. She later went on to question the wisdom of hormone therapy for menopausal women. Dr. Love has long stressed prevention over treatment, calling on researchers to develop better ways to detect breast cancer at progressively earlier stages. Now Dr. Love has answered her own call. She's developed a technique called "Ductal Lavage," which she describes in the latest edition of her book that comes out this month. Maine's Gay Rights Referendum
As part of Here and Now's Election 2000 coverage, we've been focusing on some of the ballot questions New England voters will consider on November 7th. Today we examine Question 6 in Maine. A "Yes" vote on 6 would create a gay and lesbian civil rights law prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation in areas of employment, housing, credit, and public accommodations. In 1997, a similar gay rights bill was signed into law by Maine Governor Angus King, but opponents eventually defeated the legislation by getting enough signatures to put it before voters on a 1998 ballot referendum, where it went down to defeat. This time around, the language in the gay rights referendum features some subtle but significant changes. We discuss these issues with Mike Heath, Executive Director of the "Christian Civic League of Maine" which opposes Question 6 and Susan Farnsworth, a member of the Executive Committee for "Yes on 6."
