HAVING HIS SAY: East meets West in pianist's hands
By HIROKO OIKAWA,Special to The Asahi Shimbun
For Turkish pianist and composer Fazil Say, performing music is a way of telling the particular story that comes into his head that day. ``When I play Bach or Mozart, people say, `Did you change the piece?''' he said in an interview in Tokyo during his Japan tour last month. ``I say, `No, it was so different because it was the story of today.' The story going on in my mind makes a very different sound (each day),'' said Say, whose energetic and charismatic performing style is reminiscent of Glenn Gould. ``You have to trust your inside voice. I don't just play with my fingers.'' Say's nationwide concert tour, which included sellout recitals and orchestral collaborations, featured a classical repertoire that included Mozart as well as the pianist's own compositions. Born in Ankara in 1970, Say began studying piano and musical composition at 5. The importance of listening to his inner voice was stressed at an early stage.

AUFBAU - April 3, 2003
He Changed the Study of Music in America
A New Biography of Rudolf Serkin By Styra Avins "Why should anyone write about me?" Rudolf Serkin is supposed to have asked. Authors Stephen Lehmann and Marion Faber have answered that question decisively with their biography of the great pianist, "Rudolf Serkin: A Life." By recent standards this is a brief biography; the narrative portion of the volume comprises only 265 pages, but this suffices to bring the important career and unusual person of the man to life. As the partner of the quintessential German musician of the time, Serkin’s career blossomed. Their two names became so intertwined that the authors rightly devote an entire chapter to "The Venerable Firm of Busch and Serkin." The connection was cemented for life by Serkin’s eventual marriage to the Buschs’ daughter, Irene, who was only three years old when Serkin first met her. The marriage took place 15 years later. In the meantime, Serkin had lived in the Busch home as an adoptive member of the family. As a son? As a brother? The issue is noted, but not explored–a result, perhaps, of the authors’ explicit unwillingness to invade Irene Serkin’s (who was still alive during much of the writing of the biography) privacy or the privacy of the many other Serkins still alive. What is especially important about Marlboro is the role it played in developing an enduring place for chamber music in the United States. Marlboro was neither the first nor the only place in the U.S. where the study and presentation of chamber music was central. There have been other summer schools, in equally remote places, founded by other European musicians, who, like Serkin, imbued their participants with devotion to a repertory not focused on the soloist. But no place has had anything approaching Marlboro’s impact. The difference lies in the personality of Serkin himself. One of the most rewarding aspects of "Rudolf Serkin: A Life" is the picture it provides of Marlboro’s particular atmosphere, from its extraordinary beginnings to the present.

His most famous works include his 5th Symphony, 9th Symphony, Für Elise, and the Moonlight Sonata. Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany. His mother was Magdalena Keverich and his father was Johann Beethoven. They named their son after his grandfather. He moved to Vienna when he was 22, where he studied under Franz Joseph Haydn. In Vienna he earned a reputation as a piano virtuoso and improvisor, and began publishing his own compositions soon after. By the early 1800s he had established his reputation as a great and daring composer. Beethoven began to lose his hearing at least by 1801. He continued composing nonetheless, and his 9th Symphony, amongst many other works, was composed after he had become totally deaf.

Technical proficiency matters in performance, but what listeners remember is something else. ...But his reputation went into a steep decline after his death in 1933, and the condescendingly colorful account of his platform antics included in Harold C. Schonberg's The Great Pianists from Mozart to the Present (1963) was for many years the only readily available description of Pachmann's playing.3 Not until recently were his recordings transferred to CD, making it possible for modem listeners to judge his playing-and eccentricities-for themselves.4 The first thing one notices on listening to Pachmann's recordings of Chopin, the composer with whom he was most closely identified, is their pronounced instability of tempo... ...In spite of (or because of) its deviations from Chopin's text, Rachmaninoff's playing, like Pachmann's, exerts a compulsion on the open-minded listener that is infinitely more relevant to appreciation than his comparative "incorrectness... ...In the end, the presence of this compelling force is the only thing that matters, since the ambiguity of musical notation ensures that, the question of technical proficiency aside, the classics cannot be played rightly or wrongly, they can only be played more or less interestinglyand what makes an interpretation interesting is the extent to which it embodies the personality of a master interpreter...

Her Oct. 24 program includes the classics that she performed at her 25th anniversary gala concert at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center in 2001 to celebrate her debut recital there:
