As a social historian and african-american writer I enthralled when I read the NY Times Book Review of Kathryn Talalay's bio of phillippa Schuyler. Schuyler made her mark as a musical child prodigy and later, as an adult, a celebrated composer-pianist. Schuyler's life as an international performer in one sense mirrors that of another but more recognized "tragic mulatoo", Dorthy Dandridge. And her last career as a grounbreaking war correspondent in South Vietnam is particularly entriguing. Ove...

Monday, March 10, 2003 Pianist Serkin breathtaking Maestro Eri Klas takes CSO, Strauss to intense heights
    By Janelle Gelfand
    The Cincinnati Enquirer
It was a horn-lover's evening, a program of Richard Strauss and Brahms played by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Saturday that captured all the power and majesty those scores demand and resulted in two standing ovations. A small but appreciative crowd turned out to hear the excellent American pianist Peter Serkin play Brahms' Concerto No. 1 in D Minor. In the second half, Estonian maestro Eri Klas conducted Strauss' tone poem, Ein Heldenleben, featuring no fewer than nine French horns. Klas, whose only other CSO appearance was in 1992, has carved out a distinguished career in Northern Europe. Presently, he is music director of the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Tampere (Finland) Philharmonic. His experience on the opera stage includes the Estonian National Opera in Tallinn, where he is conductor laureate, and the Finnish National Opera, where he is principal guest conductor. Knowing this, it was no surprise to hear the dark color and drama that he elicited from the CSO in the orchestral exposition to Brahms' D Minor Concerto, a work that is symphonic in scope and richness. That sense of drama, combined with the artistry of Serkin, made for an impressive collaboration.

The year 2003 marks the hundredth anniversary of pianist Rudolf Serkin's birth, and DG's "incomparable" collection is both appropriate and well deserved. It is curious, however, that we have heard nothing from Sony Classical on this subject, as it is for its predecessor label (Columbia) that Serkin made his most characteristic recordings. By the time he signed to DG, Serkin was a late septuagenarian, and no longer capable of playing with the technical aplomb he showed in earlier decades. The three Beethoven sonatas presented here were recorded in 1987, and the Mozart concerto comes from a year later! Especially in the case of the Beethoven sonatas, one is forced to label these performances as "good, considering" instead of merely "good." The two discs come in a digipak with an affectionate and affecting booklet note by Jeremy Siepmann. The Brahms and Mozart have good sound; the Beethoven isn't quite up to house standards. (The original recording was done by Austrian Radio.)

Pianist Rudolf Serkin, a virtuosic solo performer and chamber musician, captivated music lovers the world over for much of the twentieth century. Although he acquired a large and devoted public following, Serkin preferred to keep out of the spotlight, instead directing attention toward the music he loved. Dedicated to disseminating European classical music in America, Serkin became a committed teacher and director of major musical institutions. Rudolf Serkin: A Life, the first biography of this influential figure, offers an insightful analysis of Serkin's role in shaping American musical values and provides a rare glimpse into the life story of this intense performer and elusive man.

    Synopsis
    Book Description

This book is the first biography of 20th-century pianist Rudolf Serkin, providing a narrative of Serkin's life with emphasis on his European roots and the impact of his move to America. Based on his personal papers and correspondence, as well as extensive interviews with friends, family, and colleagues, the authors focus on three key aspects of Serkin's work, particularly as it unfolded in America: his art and career as a pianist, his activities as a pedagogue, including his long association with the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, and his key role in institutionalizing a redefinition of musical values in America through his work as artistic director of the Marlboro Music School and Festival in Vermont. A candid and colorful blend of narrative and interviews, it offers a probing look into the life and character of this very private man and powerful musical personality. The book concludes with a discography by Paul Farber that documents an essential part of Serkin's achievement.
