By Staff Reports Published: Monday, September 15, 2003 Media Credit: Steve Cross Pianist Peter Serkin performs Stefan Wolpe’s “Passacaglia” at the Steinway Dedication Concert Sunday afternoon at the music hall in the Wright Music Building.
Grammy-nominated pianist Peter Serkin performed yesterday at the Music Hall of the Wright Music Building as part of the Steinway Dedication Concert series.
Serkin performed Stefan Wolpe's "Passacaglia" and two songs by Ludwig van Beethoven, "Piano Sonata in E Major" and "Variations on a Waltz" by Anton Diabelli.
The concert series comes after Robert McLean, a private investor, donated 54 Steinway pianos to the School of Music valued at $1.5 million. MTSU is now an "All-Steinway" school.
Serkin has collaberated with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Orion String Quartets and TASHI, of which he was a founding member.
The final dedication concert features the Beaux Arts Trio, a group consisting of Menahem Pressler on the piano, Daniel Hope on the violin and Antonio Meneses on the cello. The concert is on Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the music hall in the Wright Music Building.

    Three Pieces for Piano
    Press and Program Notes
Three Pieces for Piano was premiered by Peter Serkin at the 92nd Street Y on November 11, 1989. It was commissioned for him by the 92nd Street Y with funds provided in part by the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, and with public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and the NY State Council on the Arts. Three Pieces for Piano
Program note by the Composer New York Newsday
Tim Page "Peter Serkin, a great pianist at the peak of his powers, has had the splendid audactity to devote an entire program to new music...he has commissioned short works from 11 composers... Serkin chose his composers carefully; they have rewarded him with miinatures of unusually high quality. "Tobias Picker provided three interrelated pieces: the outer two shot by quickly and brilliantly, the central movement was serious and sumptuous." The New York Times
Bernard Holland "Peter Serkin joined the early-music movement...by offering one of the most authentic of 18th-century practices: programs consisting of all new music. "One recurring impression throughout the evening...was of composers who care for Mr. Serkin's chosen instrument, who have written music that flatters the piano, exploits its pleasures and bathes in its most attractive qualities.

PETER SERKIN TO PERFORM ALL-BEETHOVEN SOLO RECITAL DUE TO PAMELA FRANK INJURY ON LA JOLLA CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY'S REVELLE SERIES WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 2002

La Jolla, CA - Due to a recurring hand injury, violinist Pamela Frank has been forced to cancel her nationwide tour with pianist, Peter Serkin, including her upcoming concert on the La Jolla Chamber Music Society's Revelle Series on Wednesday, April 17. Mr. Serkin will instead, be featured in solo recital in a special All-Beethoven program. The performance will be at 8:00 p.m. at the Sherwood Auditorium of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, 700 Prospect Street, La Jolla.
Ms. Frank's injury has prevented her from performing consistently for the past 9 months. While it was her hope that she would be ready for the upcoming spring tour, the severity of the injury has left her with no choice but to cancel.
"We are disappointed that Ms. Frank has canceled," said La Jolla Chamber Music Society Executive Director Neale Perl. "But we wish her a speedy recovery and return to performing. We are thrilled to be able to present such an exciting alternate to the original duo recital. Serkin is a brilliant musician and it will be a privilege to hear him in a 500-seat hall!"

A pianist is a person who plays the piano
A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists
A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Sergei Rachmaninov Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin , and Robert Schumann were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play.
Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including jazz classical music , and all sorts of popular music

Echoes of Ravinia's first century ring through 2004 lineup of classical music
March 4, 2004 BY WYNNE DELACOMA Classical Music Critic
When Ravinia opened in 1904, it was an amusement park offering dining, dancing and the chance to play some baseball in a bucolic setting 25 miles north of Chicago. In 1911, the amusement park transformed itself into a music festival, and in 1936 it became the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. On June 4, Ravinia kicks off its 100th anniversary season with more than 100 music, dance and theater events ranging from South African Zulu opera to the CSO. The 2004 classical music lineup pays tribute to highlights of Ravinia's past century. There will be a visit from the New York Philharmonic, whose predecessor orchestra, the New York Symphony, gave the first classical concert at the park in 1905. In the 1920s Ravinia was a world-renowned opera center, and the CSO honors that era with a concert version of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro'' June 19 conducted by Daniel Barenboim. Act I of Wagner's "Die Walkure'' with Deborah Voigt and conductor James Conlon, Ravinia's music director-designate, is scheduled July 25. Studs Terkel hosts a gala centennial concert July 31 starring sopranos Renee Fleming and Heidi Grant Murphy, mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, Lang Lang and others. On Aug. 15, Ravinia's exact birthday, park admission will be 25 cents, the price charged in 1904.

Stravinsky: Capriccio for piano and orchestra With Peter Serkin Mozart: Symphony No. 41 in C, K. 551, Jupiter Review by Seth Rogovoy (LENOX, July 21, 2003) Sunday’s concert by the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hans Graf was a meaty, tasty sandwich on white bread. Sandwiching Stravinsky’s Capriccio for piano and orchestra in between symphonies by Weber and Mozart was on odd bit of programming. Although the Weber and the Mozart each had moments of grandeur, they were far surpassed by the rollicking Stravinsky, which was given a spectacular performance by pianist Peter Serkin. The Capriccio opened with a dark, descending fanfare echoed by a quiet modulation of strings before Serkin introduced a moody Russian melody. The orchestra deftly circled around Serkin’s haunted lines, caressing and surrounding it in swaddling, while flutes danced above. Having been calmed, the piano became playful – capricious, if you will – and took on the aura of a ballet class, with dancers running through their exercises but with hustle and bustle swirling around them. People in the form of orchestra sections began popping in on the rehearsal from different angles, peeking through the doors or windows, first the strings, then the clarinets and then the flutes, until the rehearsal came to an end and the door closed.

Two gifted musicians at the Boston Symphony
    by Leonard Lehrman 601 words
A generation apart, they would seem nonetheless to be the perfect match: two fabulously gifted musicians, the composer Toru Takemitsu (1930-1966) and pianist Peter Serkin (b. 1947), both self-taught in their youth, who earned the approbation of the masters in their adolescence, and went on to glittering international careers. Takemitsu took to music at age 16, when pneumonia forced him into a convalescence soothed by long hours' listening to the radio, and he decided to become a composer. Two years later he began formal studies. In 1959, Igor Stravinsky called the Tokyo-born composer's 1957 Requiem a masterpiece. Seven years later, Takemitsu created a group called Orchestral Space, in collaboration with Seiji Ozawa, currently (and for the past 24 years) music director of the Boston Symphony. By the end of his life, Takemitsu had created over 90 film scores and dozens of concert works, including no fewer than 7 for Peter Serkin. The great classical pianist Rudolf Serkin (1903-1991), founder of the Marlboro Music Festival and unexcelled in Beethoven and Brahms, refused at first to teach his son Peter the piano. Then in 1959, the twelve-year-old surprised him by learning and performing the Haydn Concerto in D at Marlboro, and the father relented. The son's career would, however, take a very different tack: Though he too would savor the repertoire of Bach (especially the Goldberg Variations), Beethoven, and Brahms (as in the wonderful joint violin-piano recital with Pamela Frank at Tilles last December, featuring Brahms's complete works for that combination of instruments), he would specialize in the works of Webern, Wolpe, Wuorinen, and pieces written for himby Berio, Goehr, Henze, Kirchner, Knussen, Lieberson and Takemitsu.

Credit: Jason Duckles Q: Do you find that being in this trio makes you a better musician?
    Rieko:
For me, absolutely yes. I believe that playing chamber music helps tremendously to understand solo music better. In fact, there are many solo works written in the chamber music style such as Beethoven's early sonatas, which reminds you string quartets. Also, playing in the chamber groups makes you listen to other voices much more carefully with flexibility.
Q: Do you come from a musical family? How and when did you first pick up your instrument?
    Rieko:
My family is not musical, but I started taking piano lessons together with the girl next door who also turned 5 then. Our first teacher was really great and I enjoyed it so much from the very beginning! (but my friend quit only after a few months....)
