Pianist Peter Serkin to Perform at Middlebury College's Center for the Arts
Pianist Peter Serkin will perform in the Concert Hall at the Middlebury College Center for the Arts on Tuesday, October 14 at 7:30 p.m. According to Susan Stockton, the director of the CFA, Mr. Serkin's concert will be one of the highlights of the College's concert series. "Peter is bombarded with requests to perform. He's also very selective about his commitments so we're thrilled that he's coming," said Ms. Stockton.
Peter Serkin combines a long-standing and absorbing interest in contemporary music with a thorough, ongoing exploration of the standard classical repertoire. This unique blend brings a remarkable diversity to Mr. Serkin's programs. On October 14, he will perform works by Reger, Takemitsu, Lieberson, Knussen and Beethoven.
Since his debut at age 12 at the Marlboro Music Festival, Mr. Serkin has successfully conveyed the essence of four centuries of musical repertoire. His performances with symphony orchestras, recital appearances, chamber music collaborations, and recordings worldwide caused "New York Magazine" to comment, "He is one of the supreme musicians of our time." Mr. Serkin has performed with the world's major symphony orchestras, from those of New York and Los Angeles to the London Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. "Peter Serkin's Saturday afternoon piano recital at the Kennedy Center was one of the great musical events of the season-serious, searching and stimulating, an idiosyncratic mixture of familiar and unfamiliar works played with poetry and authority," said "The Washington Post."

Since its inception, the Orion String Quartet has been consistently praised for the fresh perspective and individuality it brings to performances of a broad range of repertoire. The group offers diverse programs that juxtapose classic works of the standard quartet literature with masterworks by living composers; the Quartet's recordings on Sony Classical and Arabesque reflect this diversity. For Sony Classical, the Orion recorded Wynton Marsalis's first classical composition for strings, At the Octoroon Balls
