A pianist is a person who plays the piano A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists. A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ludwig van Beethoven Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin ... Robert Schumann , and Sergei Rachmaninov were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including jazz classical music , and all sorts of popular music Well-known or influential classical pianists:

What harmonic imagination! Classically trained musicians have almost completely lost the art of improvisation. Ironically, Tatum may be in a more direct line of descent from Bach than we are. They could both improvise an eight-part fugue if they had to."

The opposite cases are so rare, in which I think Rudolf Serkin perhaps succeeded most. Furthermore, he is one of the most outstanding example of a professional musical family in 20th century. Rudolf Serkin was born in Eger(Bohemia? Austria?) on 28th March 1903 in a Jewish Russian family. He was taught music by father(singer) and moved to Vienna at nine, where piano by Richard Robert and composition by Joseph Marx(then George Szell was among his pupil, and the two musician coworked in many recordings later in USA). Rudolf was hailed as a child prodigy as he played Mendelssohn's concerto with Vienna Philharmonic at twelve, but he started regular concert carrier in 1920. It is said that his connection with Busch family was in 1920, also. (I heard this story that) Adolf Busch was seated at a concert by Rudolf. Busch was amazed by Rudolf's gifts and tried to meet him so as to ask his accompaniment, managing to meet Rudolf at train station shortly before Rudolf's leaving because he was disappointed by audiences' response. The two men, met by accident, had played for 32 years. Rudolf gave the Berlin d

Monday, March 10, 2003 Pianist Serkin breathtaking Maestro Eri Klas takes CSO, Strauss to intense heights
By Janelle Gelfand
The Cincinnati Enquirer
It was a horn-lover's evening, a program of Richard Strauss and Brahms played by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Saturday that captured all the power and majesty those scores demand and resulted in two standing ovations. A small but appreciative crowd turned out to hear the excellent American pianist Peter Serkin play Brahms' Concerto No. 1 in D Minor. In the second half, Estonian maestro Eri Klas conducted Strauss' tone poem, Ein Heldenleben, featuring no fewer than nine French horns. Klas, whose only other CSO appearance was in 1992, has carved out a distinguished career in Northern Europe. Presently, he is music director of the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Tampere (Finland) Philharmonic. His experience on the opera stage includes the Estonian National Opera in Tallinn, where he is conductor laureate, and the Finnish National Opera, where he is principal guest conductor. Knowing this, it was no surprise to hear the dark color and drama that he elicited from the CSO in the orchestral exposition to Brahms' D Minor Concerto, a work that is symphonic in scope and richness. That sense of drama, combined with the artistry of Serkin, made for an impressive collaboration.
