63. Greg Sandow -- Garrick Ohlsson, Liszt, And Bach
I can always listen to andras schiff s recording, reissued that you d swear Mr. schiff had more forgotten but now triumphantly rediscovered pianist, Ernst Levy
http://www.gregsandow.com/ohlsson.htm
Garrick Ohlsson is a pianist with rare wit, and the most delightful part of his recent recital of Beethoven and Liszt at Alice Tully Hall came in his encore a Beethoven bagatelle barely 30 seconds long, delivered with a wry smile, as if to say, "That's all folks!" He'd just done the exhausting "Hammerklavier" sonata, one of Beethoven's craziest pieces, and everybody got the joke: He just didn't have more piano playing in him.
This was the second of three Liszt-plus concerts that Mr. Ohlsson is giving as part of Lincoln Center's "Great Performers" series, but the first was more gripping if only because it showed that Liszt at least in some of his more popular works isn't wholly a classical composer. Of course Liszt wrote in what we'd now consider a classical style, and his pieces show many structural traits of what we'd now call classical music. But when he first made his reputation early in the 19th century, he was emphatically not considered classical. He was a popular entertainer, adored by multitudes in the growing middle class, and especially by women, who sighed at every note he played in his piano concerts, and even rushed to collect his discarded cigars. Can we hear that side of Liszt today? Well, just listen to his Sonata for Piano in B minor, which Mr. Ohlsson played at that first recital. Or, better, start by looking at the printed score. The classical-music structure of the work its division into separate parts, flowing together to make an integrated whole is apparent at first glance, and in the most elementary way. Liszt will grab hold of a musical idea, and simply repeat it, until it dissolves into whatever's coming next.

Biography
Andrea Padova first achieved critical attention when he won the "J.S.Bach" International Piano Competition in 1995 and since then has been widely considered " one of the most important contemporary interpreters of Bach on the Piano " (Mainzer Allgemeine Zeitung).
Born in 1962, he studied piano with Vincenzo Vitale, Aldo Ciccolini, Eric Larsen and composition with Gino Marinuzzi and Franco Donatoni at the Accademia Nazionale di S.Cecilia in Rome. Later he developed his knowledge of 18th century performance practice, and that of ancient instruments including the clavichord and fortepiano.
Prize-winner in other internationals competitions, both as pianist ("J.Hofmann", "Ibla Grand Prize", "V.Bellini") and composer ("A.Casella" - Accademia Chigiana di Siena, "Wiener Wettbewerb fur neue Musik") he has given recitals in Italy, France, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Canada and the United States.
In 1993 he was awarded the Berti Fellowship of the North Carolina School of the Arts, which gave him the opportunity to dedicate himself to the reconstruction of some of Bach’s fragments, which he subsequently recorded for inclusion in his first CD. About this recording, Harold C. Schonberg described Padova’s playing as providing "

13th June 1999
LSO, Bernard Haitink, Andras Schiff Back to
On Sunday 13 June a group of us from the BBCM went to hear the LSO at the Barbican Concert Hall play Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 18 in B flat and two pieces by Strauss - the Burleske in D minor and Also Sprach Zarathustra - all under the direction of Bernard Haitink. Andras Schiff, the pianist in the first two pieces, was absolutely riveting throughout. The Mozart was the more reflective of the two piano pieces, and more subtle. It wasn't as showy as its Strauss counterpart, and was more intimate, requiring greater concentration from the audience. The final movement was fairly exuberant and stormy, allegro vivace, with a triumphant solo by the fantastic Andras Schiff, which in some ways was going to prepare us for the Strauss. The Strauss pieces were less demanding and I found myself reclining into my seat. In the Burleske, the first of the two Strauss pieces, a full timpani section was brought on, together with some more brass. It opens with a theme on timpani to which the orchestra replies, and then gives way to a lovely piano solo. A relaxed waltz leads up to the piece's explosions and fiery recapitulation of its long coda. As for Also sprach Zarathustra, the long introduction was that used by Kubrick in his film 2001: A Space Odyssey. It begins with a dramatic and stark trumpet fanfare, with the timpani beating out a consistent rhythm in the background, and then varies between the major and minor tones. Then the strings enter on a more joyous note and we're introduced to the organ, a rather small one considering the size of the stage. Eventually the piece moves towards a more tranquil ending. It was quite remarkable to see Haitink conduct such a full orchestra with such ease.

Glenn Gould, Lang Lang,
and les barricades mystèrieuses
by Angus Verspeeten
The Canadian pianist Glenn Gould burst onto the aural scene in 1955 with his ear-opening recording of the Bach Goldberg Variations. Now jocular, now limpid, by turns pensive and danceable , Gould's performance was a young man's discovery and celebration of life in one of the monuments of human art. As often happens with such monuments, so much serious scholarship and reverential playing had accreted to the Goldberg Variations that, until Gould, people had forgotten that it was a work of profound, though not unalloyed, joy. Thirty years later, shortly before his death, Gould recorded the variations again. If the 1955 version was a spring day in the Bavarian Alps, the 1985 version was a winter night beside the frozen Baltic Sea. Same music, same pianist, same world. But. But. In that "but" lies mystery, much the same mystery that we encounter in quantum physics, observing the electron just before and just after a quantum leap. What happens in that interim? Where does it happen? How? Why? Since Gould showed the listening world that there was a great deal more to Bach than stereotypical teutonic stoicism, other pianists, generally possessed of more bravado and a lot less talent, have had a go at the piece with decidedly mixed results.

Manuel Villet, Piano Recital, St. John’s, Smith Square, 9th April. Schiff may be sometimes demanding, sometimes austere in his programming, but the clear implication behind all his recitals is that he – and his colleagues, where appropriate – are to be regarded as mediators with the masters, not primarily as personalities in their own right. This can lead to a certain emotional coolness, which in itself may be inspiring, especially when coupled with intellectual perspicacity – a wonderful performance of Bach’s ‘Goldberg Variations’ I heard a couple of years ago in Brussels remains one of my most treasured concert experiences. Recently in London Schiff has chosen to promote the chamber music of Janacek, and the recital at the Wigmore Hall on the 28th featured two of the composer’s major piano pieces, the surviving movements of the sonata I.X.1905
