Evening Music with David Garland The Extraordinary Andras Schiff Friday, April 16, 2004 The extraordinary Andras Schiff places his bravura pianism at the service of two composers this evening. Our first offering is Bach's Keyboard Concerto No. 2, which Schiff performs with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. You can hear them live at Carnegie Hall on April 27th, playing both Bach and Mendelssohn. Evening Music's last hour features Schiff playing solo piano in Janacek's "In the Mist," disguising its severe technical demands with his unfettered artistry. Before that, Pianist Keith Jarrett and the American Composers Orchestra under Dennis Russell Davies illuminate Alan Hovhaness's "Lousadzak," whose name means, roughly, "dawn of light." Then we hear Davies conduct the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vienna in "The Light," Philip Glass's evocation of light waves and particles, written to commemorate the 1887 Michelson-Morley experiment, which demonstrated that—regardless of the motion of the observer—the speed of light remains the same. Comparison Version : Schiff/Decca/1983
I should report from the start that I am not a big fan of Andras Schiff's 1983 recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations from Decca which can also be found on the Penguin label. I find his performance mannered and fussy, often destroying a fine sense of flow and momentum. Further, he can be so reticent in his touch with both the upper and lower voices that the impact he conveys keeps cutting out.
So, why would I even bother acquiring Schiff's new version? Mainly because about 20 years have passed since the earlier recording, and I've always thought that Schiff has what it takes to be an exceptional representative for Bach's music.
Although I hoped for better things from Schiff this time around, I am absolutely bowled over by his wonderful new interpretation. Largely gone are the mannerisms and search for nuances that aren't there. More significant, the reticence of twenty years ago is now absent; Schiff's newly assertive touch is consistent and a joy to listen to. Instead of hanging back in the shadows, Schiff is now a full participant in Bach's

The long awaited and warmly anticipated piano recital of Andras Schiff on Friday, March 13, at Sunset Center in Carmel, turned out to be something of a disappointment. The occasion was the Carmel Music Society's fifth concert of its 1997-98 season. A second disappointment was the debut of the Society's new Hamburg Steinway concert grand that arrived one week earlier by airfreight from Paris where it had been selected by French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Thibaudet was featured on the Society's concert series the previous season as assisting pianist to violinist Joshua Bell.
We had all hoped that the piano would be a "dream" instrument enhancing every note of a visiting artist. In fact, it is only a good instrument, not a great one. Its Renner action is velvety smooth, as we might expect from that great manufacturer of piano actions. The piano's sound, however, is distinctly neutral, cold and glassy, rather like a Yamaha concert grand. The low bass octaves, normally the crown jewels of a good concert grand, sound more like that a of seven-foot, rather than a nine-foot piano. The tenor and treble of the instrument are clear, but without a distinctive aura. Curiously enough, the Carmel Music Society's fifty-year-old New York Steinway concert grand that the Society recently sold for approximately $30,000 had all the qualities that the new instrument lacks. But, what we

Johann Sebastian Bach's Capriccio in B-flat Majo r is commonly (though not conclusively) considered to have been written in connection with his slightly older brother Johann Jacob's entry as an oboist into the service of King Charles XII of Sweden in 1704. (Johann Jacob was to serve in military campaigns that took him as far as Constantinople; he became flautist at the Swedish court in 1713). The nineteen-year-old composer provided descriptive titles in a combination of Italian and German for the six movements of the work, along the lines of Kuhnau's Biblical Sonata s of 1700. (Bach had become organist at Arnstadt in 1703; two decades later he succeeded Kuhnau at Leipzig.) The progress of the work is as follows: 1) blandishments of his friends not to undertake the journey; 2) portrayal of various dangers that might befall him in distant lands; 3) general lament of his friends; 4) his friends, seeing they cannot stop him, bid him farewell; 5) the song of the post-horn; 6) fugue imitating the sound of the post-horn. Most striking musically are the strange modulations in no. 2, the sighing variations over the chaconne bass in no. 3, and the octave leap of the post-horn which figures in both nos. 5 and 6. The fugue is typical of the capriccio genre at this time. Delight in the uncharacteristic programmatic character of this work makes it one of the best known of Bach's early years.
