Concert Review Bach '48' Book 1. Andras Schiff (piano). Royal Festival Hall, 21 May 2000
This was a popular event at which I found myself out of sympathy. The RFH was almost full and the audience generally appeared content, respectful, appreciative and attentive - a few people left early during the first half, having probably found themselves in the wrong concert! Andras Schiff , who is properly renowned for his Bach playing, rebuked some coughers in a school-masterly fashion during one of the fugues. I have no prejudine against Bach on the piano, indeed I prefer it to harpsichord for this music. In his programme notes he castigates militant 'authenticists' who seek to ban Bach on the piano; are there really any such? But are these intimate pieces really appropriate for a huge concert hall, however satisfactory for the promoters financially? That is the nub of the problem, which Schiff does not address in his lengthy and thoughtful essay, which traverses many of the issues. The other question is whether this is good programme planning? 24 preludes and 24 fugues can be a lot to take straight off. Schiff's playing was expressive, but sounded quiet and a little remote at a distance. He was sparing in use of pedal, as he advocates but, despite his writing to the contrary, his approach seemed to be based mainly on

Mind your mobile phones and hold your cough: pianist may run away after 3d ring (0)
Famous Hungarian pianist Andras Schiff refused to play to the rings of mobile phones, peeps of watches, and cough and sneezes of the audience as he was performing at the Edinburgh Art Festival. Mr. Schiff was trying to play Mozart’s Fantasy in h-minor but could not concentrate when mobile phones started ringing in the hall. He walked off the stage after the 3d ring, having recommended the audience to properly clear their throats during the break. Some critics, who were present at the concert, admit that the audience turned out especially noisy there. Children normally behave much more quietly.

A superb new recording of J.S. Bach's monumental keyboard work, a piece which offers extraordinary musical, technical and intellectual challenges to the performer. Pianist Andras Schiff says of the work: "Isn't it understandable that every musician would want to play this wonderful work? Its deep humanity, spirituality, optimism and intellectual power speak to us directly in these 'distracted' times. This is one of those few journeys that can be repeated again and again".

Andras Schiff got up the nose of Le Monde during the 1997 Salzburg Festival. First it was sartorial. "His dress is old-fashioned, the revers of his lapels are in black velvet, a watch chain completes the ensemble." Then personal. The Hungarian "poses as a personage, a great master of the piano". And finally it was musical. "The left hand disappears in a halo of pedal, the tempo shifts, the right hand sounds too loudly..." Edinburgh Festival audiences will have the chance to umpire. Is Schiff the personable, unassuming guide to the Austro-German musical tradition we have always taken him to be? Or does he play too loud? At the Usher Hall the pianist will play, probably quite delicately, the six Bach Partitas. The week after he will perform and direct from the piano, in something of a feat, four Mozart piano concertos plus the Quintet for Piano and Winds before doing something similar but entirely different a couple of nights later. The French critic sighs predictably. Schiff is "insatiable", he has already written. He is a "bulimic" of the piano.

Andras Schiff: Wanted quiet before resuming his recital
World-renowned pianist Andras Schiff stormed out of his performance at the Edinburgh Festival until the ringing from mobile phones and other distractions had stopped. The Hungarian virtuoso was in the middle of his performance when the noise from phones, watches and the audience coughing became too much.

He came back after taking a few minutes backstage to recompose himself, a festival spokesman confirmed. Festival reviewer Katie Grant from the Scotsman newspaper was at the concert and witnessed the dramatics. "It was Fantasia in C Minor with mobile phone, beeping watches and coughing and sneezing accompaniment.

It was Fantasia in C Minor with mobile phone, beeping watches and coughing and sneezing accompaniment." Andras Schiff (a wonderful, wonderful pianist, who I've been lucky to hear in concert) had enough of the background noise and left the stage at the Edinburgh festival until people turned off their phones and cleared their throats. Over-reaction, or justified against rudeness? And have you ever experienced something similar at a play/concert/gig?

Maybe a little extreme, but I sympathize. Besides the elite musician who has the unlikely opportunity to play for an (usually) attentive audience, musicians must perform at parties and other events where he must deal with an audience distracted by cocktails and rowdy conversation rather than this sort of noise. Maybe he was touchy after years of this frustration? However, a polite, 'I remind you to turn off your cell-phones' could have also done the trick.

Doesn't seem like an over-reaction to me. I'm sure everyone here can recall a movie or play or concert or opera ruined by a few dorks that not only left their phones on, but they used them.
