Friedheim's youth was spent in the Russian Empire's glittering capital, St. Petersburg: as he wrote in his fascinating volume Life and Liszt
After studying with Anton Rubinstein's pupil Carl Siecke, Friedheim became Rubinstein's piano pupil when he was fourteen years old. They were fruitful studies; Friedheim deeply admired Rubinstein and was awed by his piano playing when the master was in form. However, by the age of sixteen, Rubinstein's wayward temperament had become confusing to Friedheim. "His advice and criticism had begun to vary from day to day. He would say that I was going to be a successful pianist, then he could advise me to give all my time to composition. I decided to take all the advice he offered, and more, to become pianist, composer and conductor as well."
Friedheim decided to continue his education in The Faculty of Philosophy at St. Petersburg University. "Here I was in my element. I liked philosophy. Intense application was easy for me; yet I was gregarious and articulate and, because I was a good athlete, as well as a pupil of Rubinstein, and a pianist in my own right, I was popular."
He told the conservative Rubinstein that he wanted to go to Weimar to work with Liszt. In those years, Liszt's radical music left Rubinstein cold and angry. When someone asked Rubinstein where Friedheim had gone, he growled, "He went to Weimar - and to the devil." Friedheim hardly felt so. "I learned much from Rubinstein during the four years I was his pupil, but I was to learn far more from Franz Liszt, whose daring virtuosity had sounded the depths of music, both past and present, and who was now reaching out into the unknown... When I stood with exalted spirits in the presence of that august and legendary figure, Franz Liszt, my greatest hour had struck."

Arthur Rubinstein
Pianist bin.

Two New CD's
Poland's Finest at Work I rarely buy CD's in person, because the Internet is a) cheaper, b) better stocked, and c) free from oily twerps in droopy pants pretending to be black. But I decided to make an exception, in the worthy interest of immediate gratification. Virgin was always a lame place to buy classical, but they have really hit rock bottom. They've hidden the classical CD'sall seven of themon the upper floor, near the soft-porn DVD's. But I still did okay. I considered picking up some recordings of Horowitz playing Chopin, but they only had one CD, and it was pretty weak. While I was rooting through the displays, I did find one thing that stood out: a Wladyslaw Szpilman CD. I hope I spelled that right, because I'm not going around for a second pass. Szpilman is the gentleman portrayed in the movie The Pianist . Yes, I rented the DVD, I read the book within the next two days, and now I have the CD. I am awaiting delivery of my special edition

The Rubinstein Collection Vol 47 - Chopin: Waltzes, Impromptus, Bolero > Customer Review #1: Artur Rubinstein great recording of Chopin¿s Bolero, Waltzes

Artur Rubinstein great recording of Chopins Bolero and 14 Waltzes
By Peter Dietrich, president, Chopin Society of New England Artur Rubinsteins performance of the fourteen waltzes seems to be among the definitive versions. This stereo recording from a one day session in June of 1963, issued on BMG in the Rubinstein collection volume 47, and the earlier version first issued on LP RCA Victor LM-1892 recorded in December, 1953 and issued on BMG Rubinstein collection volume 29, equals in sound and profound understanding the two great versions by Alexander Brailowsky (1896-1976) recorded in the early fifties on LP for RCA Victor LM-1082 as well as the stereo recording from the early sixties issued on Sony Music SBK 46346 in 1990.

Arthur Rubinstein
(Redirected from Artur Rubinstein Arthur Rubinstein ) wasone of the greatest classical pianists. He was born in , Poland, and died in Geneva
Recordings
Chopin , which he recorded both early and late in his career. The early recordings, on EMI 64933, are bright and full of vitality. The later ones, for RCA, are more polished but no lessenergetic. Don't overlook the Schubert and Brahms Sonatas on RCA 6257 and 61862 respectively. The short pieces by Grieg , on RCA 61883, which also includes the Grieg Concerto , areenergetic and more earnest than usual for these light works. Rubinstein was also an outstanding chamber musician, partnering with Szeryng Heifetz Piatigorsky , the Guarneri Quartet , and others inthe music of Brahms Schubert , and Dvorak . Some of the best examples are the two Brahms Piano Quartets onRCA 5677 and the Schubert and Schumann Trios on RCA 6262. Rubinstein has also been the subject of an 82-disc retrospective set on RCA 63000 (single discs are also availableseparately). There is no other pianist for whom so grand a tribute would even be possible, for none recorded so extensively, andthere are few for whom it would be as well deserved.
