email info@sgouros-pianist.com Biography photos Arthur Rubinstein exclaimed: “I thank God for keeping me alive so that I would be able to hear with my own ears Sgouros play. He is the best pianist I have ever heard, including myself”. He then took off his gold watch and put it on Dimitris Sgouros' wrist as if passing on the torch. Two months later he was dead.
Born in Athens, Greece in 1969, Dimitris Sgouros began his career as an 8 year old prodigy at the Athens Conservatory, where by the time he completed his studies he had received every award given. He then continued his studies at the University of Maryland and the Royal Music of Academy of London, from which he graduated with 98% - the highest mark ever granted by the Academy. In 1982 at the age of 12, Sgouros made his Carnegie Hall debut with the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington D.C., under the direction of Mstislav Rostropovich, performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3.
He has recorded 10 albums which are sold in many countries, with compositions for solo piano by Schumann, Brahms, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt and Mozart and also Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Fantasia with the London Philharmonic, and Liszt’s Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Slovenia, to name a few as well as the 1st and 2nd Piano Concertos by J. Brahms with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra.

BOOKWAVES (Words on Books) for KZYX by Tony Miksak Today I want to talk about the pleasures of used books, old books, books out of print, books that were NOT published today and returned to the publisher tomorrow. In a way these are hidden books because up to now they've been difficult to find. Most people when they think of books think of best seller lists, and bookstores full of new books with mint covers. Ask yourself what books you really treasure. Usually those are books that have been around awhile. Books you've held in your hand and dropped baking power into. Books you read ten years ago and unpacked today from a forgotten cardboard box in the barn. Books you remember. Books you picked up at a garage sale and finally got around to reading. Books your mother read to you. Books you read to a child. Books you read when you were eight years old. Books you scribbled in. Books you remember. Books you've forgotten. Old books, books with character. Torn covers, foxed pages, someone else's inscription to someone you don't know scratched in blue ink on the first free end paper. Books that smell musty, or have perfume on them. Books with bent spines, with underlining or marginal notes. Library books borrowed by a dozen people before you. Books someone gave you. Books you borrowed and never returned. Not long ago In the charming town of Pt. Reyes Station I had the time to nose around Jill Westley's Brown Study Bookshop, a wonderful used book store that has been in Pt. Reyes for many years. In the music section I found a slightly battered copy of

Arthur Rubinstein's Obituary (from Variety , December 22, 1982)
Rubinstein Dies At 95; Towering Pianistic Talent Arthur (aka Artur) Rubinstein, 95, the great classical pianist, died in his sleep Mon. (20) at his home in Geneva, Switzerland. Rubinstein, who had few rivals among contemporary pianists, enjoyed a lengthy performing career which began at the age of four and continued until he was nearly 90. Born in Lodz, Poland, in 1887, he was the youngest of seven children of a textile producer. He began studying piano at the age of three, and by the time he was eight, there was nothing more his professors at the Warsaw Conservatory of Music could teach him. Sent to Berlin to play for Joseph Joachim, he was taken under the famous violinist's wing and made his Berlin debut at the age of 11. Afterwards, he gave recitals in Dresden, Hamburg, and Warsaw and visited Ignace Paderewski, who was one of the leading pianists of the day. Following an unsuccessful American tour in 1906; he studied with Paderewiski until 1910, when he returned to the concert stage ad became a major star in Europe. During World War I, Rubinstein gave recitals for the Allied cause. He was so enraged by German treatment of the Belgians and the Poles that he vowed never to appear in Germany again, and he never did.

Pianist
A pianist is a person who plays the piano . A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists . A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ludwig van Beethoven Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin ... Robert Schumann , and Sergei Rachmaninov were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including jazz classical music , and all sorts of popular music . 4th favorite classical pianist
Arthur Rubinstein is my 4 th favorite pianist. When people talk about Arthur Rubinstein, they usually comment on the nobility of his piano playing. It is indeed true; Rubinstein is one of the noblest pianists that ever lived. My favorite interpretations of Chopin, I think are played by Rubinstein. He is a romantic pianist, but never exaggerates in his performances. He also had a very diverse repertoire, he took to the stage the music of Isaac Albeniz, Manuel de Falla and one of my favorite composers, Heitor Villa-Lobos. He spent almost his entire life on stage, performing even in his late 90s. posted on Thursday, February 05, 2004 5:36 PM

Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982) was a complicated man. His two-volume autobiography was an interesting read, but only revealed the portions of the pianist's life which he wanted known, was filled with numerous omissions and errors, contained a great deal of petty score settling (his comments about Heifetz, Schnabel and Horowitz were especially cutting), and remarkably little discussion of music. Harvey Sachs, whose acclaimed biography of Arturo Toscanini is required reading for all musicians, has produced a meticulously researched and balanced look at the pianist's life and music.

Pianist bin.
