Whatever Happened to Arthur Rubinstein
Teachout, Terry
One of the century's most admired, and recorded, pianists has vanished from musical consciousness. ...6The most readily available visual record of Rubinstein in concert, The Last Recitalfor Israel (RCA 09026-61160-3), is, alas, a very late performance (videotaped in 1975), though it does illustrate "the dignified bearing, the absence of extraneous body movement and facial contortions, [and] the absorption in the music" described by Sachs... ...WHETHER OR not Rubinstein's recordings tell a truer tale than contemporary accounts of his playing cannot be settled by those (like me) who did not see him perform live... ...The eldest son of a cloth manufacturer from the large Jewish community of Lodz, Poland, Rubinstein began playing the piano before the age of three... ...The pianist Emanuel Ax, one of Rubinstein's greatest admirers, was profoundly disappointed by reading My Many Years... ...In his own memoirs the pianist specifically mentions some three dozen women, ranging from countesses to common prostitutes, with whom he had sexual relations prior to his marriage-starting, at the age of fifteen, with his Berlin landlady... ...3 While the Holocaust failed to turn Rubinstein into an observant Jew, it clearly played a significant part in his fervent support of the state of Israel-and, later, of Menachem Begin and the Likud party...

A survey of pianist Arthur Rubinstein's career and a guide to his finest records in the BMG Rubinstein CD Collection - his Chopin early records solos chamber music ... concertos and final recordings Recent scientific studies confirm the poets' claim - love really does make the mind work differently. Legendary pianist Arthur Rubinstein (1887 - 1983) loved life to the fullest. He once described himself as the happiest person he had ever met. His music is a unique reflection of that outlook. Yet, his attitude also raised suspicions of shallowness. We expect great artists to suffer. Yet, as Harold Schonberg noted in The Glorious Ones , Rubinstein was one of the very few musicians who died contented, having lived a fabulous and rewarding life and having achieved all he had wanted professionally. Schonberg muses that Rubinstein's only regrets were the cigars he hadn't yet smoked and the wines he hadn't yet tasted (to which perhaps should be added the women he hadn't yet loved). Rubinstein's teen years raise the question that would haunt his reputation throughout his life - if only he had more discipline and focused more on his art, could he have developed into a deeper interpreter? Seizing upon Rubinstein's life-long devotion to philandering and high living, detractors repeatedly (and perhaps jealously?) faulted him for laziness, technical lapses, narrow repertoire and simplification of difficult musical passages (all of which were true). Rubinstein's art was not superficial but reflected the joy and contentment of the total experience of living.

Arthur Rubenstein
The following info was derived from several web sites (sorry, I did not keep track of the sources). "I'm passionately involved in life - to be alive, to have music, to walk, to see - it's all a miracle. Music is not a hobby not even a passion. Music is me." "Above all pianists - indeed, above virtually any musician of the last fifty years - Arthur Rubinstein represented in both his life and his music-making a unique joie de vivre. That alone would set him apart in this serious musical age, where there is a high degree of skill but very little charm or poetry. Arthur Rubinstein was able to communicate joy in his playing. He loved the piano, he loved the music he played, and he was always able to charm audiences all over the world with one of the most extraordinary personalities that this century has seen. Of course that charm was buttressed by the mind of a superb musician, and by the fingers of a spectacular technician. Rubinstein coaxed a big, sonorous, golden tone from the instrument, and his fingers were in total command of anything in his repertoire. And that, paradoxically, was true even when he dropped notes or smudged passages here and there. For it was clear that a sloppy episode resulted not from lack of native ability but rather from sheer scorn of pedanticism. He was daring, he took chances, and if a few notes suffered en route that was unimportant. He was a natural, born to play the piano, and when he was on the concert stage one felt as though the piano itself was welded to his body. Musician and instrument were one.

In music, perfect pitch (also known as "absolute pitch") is the ability to distinguish and identify a given note without any musical or tonal support. For a more detailed explanation, see Q1. Note on classical composers : It is said most of them had perfect pitch. However, the existence of important composers that did not have perfect pitch (Wagner, Berlioz, Schumann, Stravinsky, Ravel, etc.) should prevent us from posting incorrect information.
