REPERTOIRE LIST Michael Roll REVIEWS Michael Roll is one of Britain's most distinguished pianists. He was born in England, son of Viennese parents, and began to play the piano at a very early age, studying with Fanny Waterman. He made his concerto debut with the City of Birmingham Orchestra at the age of ten and his Royal Festival Hall debut at twelve, playing the Schumann Concerto with Sir Malcolm Sargent conducting. His success at the first Leeds International Piano Competition in 1963, where he won first prize at the age of 17, led to the start of a career which has taken him all over the world, appearing with such conductors as Barbirolli, Boulez, Giulini, Gergiev, Haitink, Leinsdorf, Masur, Previn, Sanderling and Sawallisch. He has toured in Japan with the BBC Symphony, and in Europe with the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and English Chamber Orchestras. He appeared at the first Hong Kong Festival with the London Philharmonic and at the Edinburgh Festival with the London Symphony. His American debut was in 1974 with the Boston Symphony and Sir Colin Davis, appearing in Boston and New York. In recent seasons Michael Roll has appeared in Europe with some of the major British orchestras, as well as with the Swedish Radio, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Residentie and Kirov Orchestras under the batons of Masur, Gergiev, Svetlanov, DePreist and Kamu.

Kierkegaard - " Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards " - is quoted in the programme for this unmissable revival of a show, for which recourse to New Grove 2 nd Edition provides the date of its original production, telling us: Sondheim, Stephen (Joshua) ( b New York, 22 March 1930). American composer and lyricist. Inescapable if contentious doyen of the American musical. Merrily We Roll Along (2, Furth, after Kaufman and M. Hart), orchd Tunick, Alvin, 16 Nov 1981 - - [incl. Good Thing Going, Not a Day Goes By, Old Friends]' For readers of it is worth shouting from the rooftops that in Gareth Valentine (who studied with Sir Peter Pears at Aldeburgh and was repetiteur at the RCM Opera School) the company has a great conductor/pianist as musical director. It was hard to keep one's eyes off him and I would go to hear him conduct in any genre. Helped by three TV screens for visibility, he keeps a firm yet delicate grip on the proceedings with minimal finger gestures of one hand, whilst demonstrating real pianistic skill with the other. His ever-watchful restraint assured that the delivery of Sondheim's own lyrics took centre stage, and it was quite a surprise at the interval to see how many musicians emerged from behind their box. The full power of the ten-piece band was only unleashed in the second half at the 'premiere' of the show to which they had prostituted their 'genius', with the real, brassy sound of a big theatre musical -

    Early Piano Rolls
In the heyday of the player piano, music roll manufacturers recorded the performances of a number of famous pianists and issued rolls of their work. Here are just a few names that spring to mind:- George Gershwin, Thomas 'Fats' Waller, James P Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton, Vee Lawnhurst, Frank Milne, Percy Grainger, Liberace, Eubie Blake, Scott Joplin, Constance Mering, Harold Bauer, Phil Ohman, Frank Banta , Ignace Paderewski, Pauline Alpert, Myra Hess, Rudolf Ganz, Victor Arden and Alfred Cortot. Left to right: Thomas 'Fats' Waller, 'Jelly Roll' Morton, James P. Johnson, Scott Joplin, George Gershwin, Vee Lawnhurst. The pianist would perform upon a purpose-built recording piano, the keys and pedals of which were equipped with electrical contacts. The notes played were registered by a series of marking pens on a master roll, which was subsequently perforated by hand and any mistakes rectified. In some instances, a high speed perforator was used in preference to the marking apparatus. Most hand-played rolls were intended for use on the reproducing piano and thus it was necessary throughout the recording session to accurately determine all dynamic variations in the music. Some roll manufacturers achieved this by measurement of hammer and key velocity, while others relied upon the presence of an engineer, who interpreted this aspect of the performance by ear and skilfully calculated appropriate dynamic coding for the finished roll.

There's not much that sounds like the music of Steven Mackey, and that's saying something. Mackey's past includes freestyle skiing, early music performance, rock bands, and providing a guitar accompaniment for his brothers' LSD trips circa 1969. (Peace, man.) Is it any wonder that, given what went in his brain, what comes out sounds like this? Imagine a Bugs Bunny cartoon jointly scored by Frank Zappa and Charles Ives, and that will give you some idea of Steve Mackey's unusual gifts. Tuck and Roll Lost and Found was heard on a Mackey CD released five years ago (Bridge 9065). The Bridge version was scored for four guitars, classical and electric. This new version is described by the composer as "a snappy five-minute toccata and fanfare for orchestra." Nothing gets in the way of the toccata's kaleidoscopic graceful but perhaps over-eager high spirits; no sooner has a color and a texture been established when Mackey replaces it with something new. The brief fanfare that follows is Rube Goldberg music, perhaps a cousin of Paul Klee's twittering machine. It disappears in the distance, presumably to wreak havoc elsewhere. Eating Greens is an orchestral work in three parts and seven sections. The first part is named for the "domestic themes" of religion (a "(Lethargical) Reformation"), food ("Waffling (sic)"), and art ("Whim and Rigor (Homage to Henri Matisse)"). The middle of these three movements is a phantasmagoric collage of "Here We Come A-Caroling" and party noise-makers, capped by the sound of a phone off its hook and the recorded message, impersonal yet vaguely threatening, of an operator. The second and third parts are named "Loose Ends" (which includes "The Title Is Almost As Long As The Piece Itself," a short but memorably vile inspiration for slack-stringed violin) and "Five Chords." The final movement, named "Drunk Monk," is subtitled "Homage to Thelonius Monk," a jazz pianist Mackey admires for his "quirky, all-thumbs style."

Warren Zevon, the singer-songwriter known for his sardonic L.A. noir humor and classic-rock radio staples including "Werewolves of London," "Lawyers, Guns and Money," and "Excitable Boy," died Sunday at his Los Angeles-area home. He was 56.
Zevon was diagnosed in August 2002 with mesothelioma, an inoperable form of lung cancer. At the time, the formerly hard-living pianist and guitarist joked to an interviewer that he hoped to be alive to see the James Bond movie "Die Another Day" when it opened in November.
Instead, he lived long enough to write and record a final album, "The Wind," with the assistance of friends including Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, Billy Bob Thornton, Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris and Ry Cooder. The collection, which includes a version of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," was released Aug. 26 on Artemis Records.
