Michael Roll
Piano
Born in England of Viennese parents, Michael Roll began playing the piano at a very early age. He studied with Fanny Waterman from the age of six, made his debut with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra at the age of ten, played the Schumann Piano Concerto in the Royal Festival Hall, London, under Sir Malcolm Sargent at twelve, and at seventeen was the outstanding winner of the first Leeds International Piano Competition. Later, he took conducting lessons with Edgar Cosma in Paris. Michael Roll is now widely recognised as one of the finest interpreters of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Schumann.
Michael Roll has played all over the world, working with such conductors as Boulez, Giulini, Leinsdorf, Masur, Previn and Sanderling. In 1974 he made a successful American debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Colin Davis, and has since visited the United States and Canada on several occasions.
Michael Roll appears regularly with the major orchestras of the United Kingdom both at home and abroad. He first visited Hong Kong with the London Philharmonic, toured Japan with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Holland with the ECO, Germany and Switzerland with the BBC Symphony, Spain with the Royal Philharmonic, and Eastern Europe with the Scottish Chamber, Northern Sinfonia, and The Philharmonia. Festival appearances have included Aldeburgh, Bath, Edinburgh, Granada, Hong Kong, Vienna, and the prestigious Klavier-Festival Ruhr in Germany.

Contact us GM 3033 Previous Next Fred Hersch/Michael Moore/Gerry Hemingway: Thirteen Ways After almost 20 years of universal acclaim as a ‘musician’s musician,’ pianist/composer Fred Hersch is now gaining wide recognition as a major artists with an unmistakably singular identity. The New Yorker has called him “a poet of a pianist,” Down Beat has said “he is one of the small handful of brilliant musicians of his generation” and CD Review has noted Hersch’s “magical sense of time and space.” An old college and New York City buddy of Hersch’s, the amazing clarinetist Michael Moore, migrated to Amsterdam in the early ’80s. Moving to Holland meant forsaking fame in the USA, but Moore flourished, developing a style that has garnered him praise as the best clarinetist in jazz today. In 1986, he became only the second non-Dutch musician to win the top national jazz award, the Boy Edgar Prize. Percussionist Gerry Hemingway is Hersch’s opposite: he’s worked with Don Byron, Derek Bailey, John Cale, Anthony Braxton, Anthony Davis and others. Suffice it to say that in this case, opposites attract. Hear the incredible Hersch/Hemingway duet “Star Eyes,” especially its quietly dramatic entrance.

MIDI playing: "The Wall" Originally billed as the Rollin' Stones, the first line-up of this immemorial English 60s group was a nucleus of Mick Jagger (b. Michael Philip Jagger, 26 July 1943, Dartford, Kent, England; vocals), Keith Richard (b. Keith Richards, 18 December 1943, Dartford, Kent, England; guitar), Brian Jones (b. Lewis Brian Hopkin-Jones, 28 February 1942, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, d. 3 July 1969; rhythm guitar) and Ian Stewart (b. 1938, d. 12 December 1985; piano). In their first few months the group met some opposition from jazz and blues aficionados for their alleged lack of musical 'purity' and the line-up remained unsettled for several months. In late 1962 bassist Bill Wyman (b. William Perks, 24 October 1936, Plumstead, London, England) replaced Dick Taylor while drummers came and went including Carlo Little (from Screaming Lord Sutch 's Savages) and Mick Avory (later of the Kinks , who was billed as appearing at their debut gig, but didn't play). It was not until as late as January 1963 that drummer Charlie Watts (b. 2 June 1941, London, England) reluctantly surrendered his day job and committed himself to the group. After securing a residency at Giorgio Gomelsky 's Crawdaddy Club in Richmond, the Stones' live reputation spread rapidly through London's hip cognoscenti. One evening, the flamboyant Andrew Loog Oldham appeared at the club and was so entranced by the commercial prospects of Jagger's sexuality that he wrested them away from Gomelsky and, backed by the financial and business clout of agent Eric Easton, became their manager. Within weeks, Oldham had produced their first couple of official recordings at IBC Studios.

On the Sign up to receive FREE UPDATES for Queen ! E-Mail this story to a friend list were the revered hard rock acts Aerosmith and Queen, as well as Michael Jackson, Steely Dan, and Paul Simon. The 16th annual induction ceremony will be held on March 19, 2001. In the announcement, Aerosmith were cited for epitomizing "American blues-rooted-style rock and roll and continu[ing], after three decades, to rock our world." The statement also said, "In the golden era of glam-rock and gorgeously hyper-produced theatrical extravaganzas that defined one branch of '70s rock, no group came close in either concept or execution to Queen." Which must have been quite a mouthful.

http://www.classicbands.com/leftbanke.html
The Left Banke As "The Left Banke", one of their first recordings, "Walk Away Renee", was written by Michael Brown when he was only sixteen years old. The song is about Renee Fladen, who was Tom Finn's girlfriend, with whom Brown was infatuated. Fladen was present when Brown tried to record his harpsichord part. "My hands were shaking when I tried to play, because she was right there in the control room," he says. "There was no way I could do it with her around, so I came back and did it later." The song, which took about eight weeks to write and record, was rejected by ten major labels before Charlie Fach of Smash Records took it on. Soon after its release in Feb. 1966, "Walk Away Renee" shot up the U.S. charts and peaked at #5. The follow up song, "Pretty Ballerina" as well as "She May Call You Up Tonight" were also fruits of this infatuation. The band added guitarist Jeff Winfield and began touring. Brown's songs often included progressive key changes and chamber string arrangements, which critics dubbed "baroque pop." "Pretty Ballerina" rose in the charts early in 1967 (reaching #15) as did some early dissension among the group, causing Jeff Winfield to be replaced by Rick Brand on guitar. After the band recorded its first album in January 1967, Brown, tired of touring and wanting to be more of a studio musician, let the rest of the band continue on the road with Emmett Lake filling in on keyboards. Soon this split became a chasm and Brown and his father faced off against the other three original members, claiming rights to the name The Left Banke, and began recording without them.

Jazz Crusade

Jelly Roll Morton was once heard to opine “Rejoice at the death and cry at the birth: New Orleans sticks close to the scriptures.” Certainly the paradoxes inherent in the blues, gospel, and jazz are key to the interpretation and full enjoyment of the traditional jazz that was created in the Crescent City. The combination of the spiritual and the secular is present on all the great recordings associated with early jazz, whether it was actually recorded in New Orleans or not. It might seem almost impossible for a group of present day musicians to recreate that peculiar combination of elements of the black experience in America with the conviction and energy that was present on such classic recordings as those found on the Jelly Roll Morton Hot Pepper sessions or the music laid down by Louis Armstrong’s Hot Fives and Sevens or by countless groups of musicians who never made it into a recording studio. Yet that is precisely what Gregg Stafford and Dr. Michael White have done along with a group of musicians dedicated to making sure this music is not lost to modern listeners.
