Philipp Richardsen in conversation with Linda Cortez Linda E. Cortez is the author of various books on music; her primary attention is drawn to sociological perspectives of art. She is also a freelance writer for several Southern Californian magazines and newspapers. Philipp, you are certainly not what one would call "a typical artist." Judging by your appearance, you could easily be considered of another profession than art. Do you feel as a musician? I do. Piano music is definitely the center of my life. In my opinion, focusing on one particular subject is an essential key to success. However, that doesn't mean that, as an artist, one should feel obligated to a narrow-minded lifestyle. On the contrary - it is my strong belief that musical expression presupposes a broad perception of what is going on around you. You can't convey emotions through music when you have never experienced them yourself. That doesn't mean that one should get involved with anyone and anything just to gain experience, but I regard it as an obligation to open my eyes and never stop enlarging my general horizon. "Real mastery can only be achieved through devotion and humbleness." - These words, noticed during one of Philipp's conversations with students, might characterize his attitude toward music. "Indeed," he says, "sincere expression leaves no space for airs and graces. It is the result of permanent self-control and a clear awareness of the composer's intentions. Yet I feel so free and great when playing the piano. Somehow it is like being a tiger going for the bag - I want to conquer my instrument and dive in this wonderful, wide range of emotions." Of course it all began a little less demanding: on May 3, 1976, Philipp J. Richardsen was born in Vienna, Austria. His parents, a Viennese M.D. and a German entrepreneur of Danish descent, soon realized their newborn was unusually prone to any kind of sounds. By the age of three, Philipp had managed to create his own songs that he would sing until his parents would try to moderate his temper. Two years later, he eventually discovered the piano and received his very first piano lesson. "It was quite tough as my first teacher seemed like Methuselah to me; he was almost deaf and very strict, and he immediately insisted on learning how to read music. I could hardly reach the pedal and was already practising major and minor scales," he recalls those times. Soon after, his mother gave birth to a little sister, and his parents started their search for the best possible musical education for their son. In 1986, 10-year-old Philipp was invited to enter the piano class of 82-year-old Susanne Dressler in Vienna, who had been studying with music leading lights like I.J. Paderewski or Maurice Ravel in her youth. Additionally, he was admitted to the Music Conservatory in the city of Linz as a - due to his young age - associate student. "Professor Dressler was a phenomenon," he says. "Her huge experience, her wisdom and supreme ease as a teacher were features that I will benefit from for a lifetime. She reinforced my interests in humanism and belletristic literature, which made a whole new world open up for me."
