First university fellow appointed
Charles Link Jr., director of the Human Gene Therapy Research Institute at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, has been appointed Drake's first-ever university fellow by the Drake University Board of Governors.
"Dr. Link's appointment as a university fellow means that we have a nationally prominent scholar as a member of the faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences," said Ron Troyer, dean of the college. "The appointment stems from the connections the faculty in the biology department have fostered with an outstanding member of the community."
Link, who holds an M.D. and B.A. from Stanford University, has held various administrative positions in research laboratories at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Iowa State University. He also has had more than 150 scientific publications and abstracts and given more than 85 invited presentations.
His work has been recognized with nine awards from organizations such as the National Cancer Institute, the U.S. Public Health Service, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American College of Physicians and the U.S. Navy. In addition to his work at the Human Gene Therapy Institute, Link is an adviser to pharmaceutical companies, a reviewer for numerous professional and scientific journals and a member of many hospital and institute committees and boards.

Desondanks is de eerste jazz plaat in 1917 opgenomen in New York.

Another year has passed during which I've interviewed dozens of musical artists, mostly from the jazz world, and, as always, from these conversations, I've learned a great deal about how artists create their work and manage to survive, even flourish in the music industry. My last question during these interviews is usually this: What particular albums or CDs, or even just artists themselves, are you especially thankful for? I emphasized that this wasn't a question about "desert island" favorites or even necessarily an artist's best work, What I hoped to elicit were more thoughtful answers about what mattered most to these artists, what struck them, what, perhaps, they even felt was a gift from the cosmos. So, here for the third consecutive year in the Weekly (the length, so far, of my tenure at this esteemed journal) is a list of thanks from a wide range of musicians. Particular songs are noted in quotation while albums are in italics. And I've also included some of the more interesting comments about why these musicians picked the musicians they did. Generation No. 1 1. Peter1 Ware1 was born Abt. 1720 in Virginia. He married Susannah Randle2,2 Bef. 1750 in Brunswick Co., Va., daughter of John Randle and Mary ?. She was born Abt. 1728 in Virginia, and died 13 March 1819 in Georgia. Notes for Susannah Randle:
Susannah death is noted in the William Morgan Family Bible.
"She died in 98th or 99th year of her life." This statement is probably in error, since it would indicated a birthdate of 1720, while information from other sources have her born about 1728. Her parentage is establishedby a gift of love from John Randle to his daughter, Susannah Ware, of the plantation on which she lived with the 163 acres adjoining (Brunswick Co., Va. Deed Book 4, pg. 125). On Oct. 28, 1771 this same land is sold by Peter Ware and Susannah, his wife (Brunswick Co., Va., Deed Book 10, pg. 244)
