Bounce

Terence Blanchard
Blue Note On his Blue Note debut, New Orleans trumpeter Terence Blanchard returns to form as one of contemporary jazz's best musicians, composers, arrangers and bandleaders. While his 2001 release, Let's Get Lost, on the Sony Classical label, came up short as a sustained creative exercise, 2003's Bounce compares favourably with his previous successes, such as 2000's Wandering Moon, 1999's Jazz in Film, 1996's The Heart Speaks and 1995's Romantic Defiance. A critic with the All Music Guide goes so far as to call Bounce Blanchard's "masterpiece thus far and a high-water mark for anybody else to follow." Blanchard's latest release is strong for various reasons, not the least of which is the dynamic band, featuring Brice Winston on saxophones, Aaron Parks on piano, Brandon Owens on bass, Eric Harland on drums, Robert Glasper on organ and Fender Rhodes, and Lionel Loueke on guitar and vocals. While they aren't household names in the jazz world, they make a few sparks fly on this CD, whether playing together with Blanchard or taking a solo. For example, check out Winston's commanding tenor forays on the Blanchard originals On The Verge and Azania. Bounce may have Blanchard's name, photo and undeniable stamp on it, but it's very much an ensemble recording. Like Dave Holland's great quintet, the sidemen are active participants in creating the music, even contributing three of the nine songs, and get a chance to showcase their talents. The leader shares the spotlight rather than hogging it. The songs themselves on Bounce are another of the CD's strengths, with most featuring a memorable tune built on an engaging rhythm. Perhaps the exception is Blanchard's Fred Brown, which verges on a freer style of playing.

Rose Leaf Ragtime Club May Meeting (5/27/2001)
Reported by Gary Rametta
Thanks to all of you who joined us for the May meeting of the Rose Leaf Ragtime Club. A great showing by the members was rewarded by three-plus hours of simply wonderful music. Once again, the roster of performers was full and all displayed their varying and unique talents for everyone to enjoy.
Gary Rametta opened the program with James Scott's "Grace and Beauty" from 1909, one of the staples of classic ragtime and one of Scott's most admired works. Next, Gary was joined by Bill Mitchell for a duet version of Charles Hunter's "Queen of Love," a syncopated two-step with a memorable B section and harmonic, melodic and structural twists that signify Hunter's style of composition.
Bill Mitchell then soloed on "Sleepy Sydney," a 1907 composition by Archie Scheu of Cincinnati. This piece was recorded by Sousa's Band on Victor records in 1908. Bill continued with his always well-received "Porto Rico", then concluded with one of his favorite Joplin rags, "Scott Joplin's New Rag."
Up next was the duo of Lee Roan and George McClellan, combining on some popular Tin Pan Alley tunes. First was Jean Schwartz's "Chinatown, My Chinatown," from 1910, followed by Creamer and Layton's "After You've Gone," from 1918, and John Schonberger's "Whispering," from 1920.

JUNE 2004 PROGRAMME
Jeremy Sawkins' Jazz Organism ARIA This new formation has a refreshingly different instrumentation that allows an exploration of a fuller, warmer sounds than some of his more hard-edged recent ensembles. In addition to hard-swinging drummer David Goodman, the under-rated trombonist Jeremy Borthwick joins in to take front line duties alongside the imaginative but too rarely heard Darren Heinrich on the mighty Hammond Southpaw CD plus tunes of Jimmy Smith and Big John Patton. Jeremy Sawkins (guitar) Jeremy Borthwick (trombone) Darren Heinrich (organ) Dave Goodman (drums).
9pm-11.30pm. $13/$10 students/$9 sima members.
Triosk Two years ago Laurence Pike, Adrian Klumpes and Ben Waples formed Triosk to create a seamless connection between acoustic and electronic elements. Unsurprisingly, there are strong references to the Bill Evans Trio, as this pianist (deceased In 1980) set out to redefine the roles of a classical jazz trio, declaring drums and double bass equal lead Instruments to the piano.

Rounder 3141 The blues world held its breath this past spring when reports came from Indianapolis about Bill Clarke's collapse on stage, subsequent hospitalization and diagnosis of serious, but curable health problems. Clarke, whose writing and pioneering style on chromatic harmonica had been hinting at an engaging mix of Chicago styles and West Coast jump, was seen as a bright light in the evolution of the blues idiom. He also had a heavy live act and band, anchored by former Butterfield bassist Rick Reed. The good news is that he's back to full health and will be back on the road this September. Richard "Magic Dick" Salwitz, Jay Geils and Pat Ramsey are also survivors, but of another era. Ramsey was the renowned harp player who toured with Johnny Winter in the late '60s, became a mainstay on the Southern club circuit in the '70s, and then disappeared in the '80s. Dick, who came to immediate fame with Jay Geils' band, was a pioneer on the instrument 20 years ago, always looking for new ways to inject his harp into the band's rock-flavored mix; his work on later Geils albums was fascinating and often trend setting. He had the good fortune to play with Geils, an excellent guitarist and one of the most sympathetic to an exploratory harp player since the Myers brothers. With the demise of the Geils band, however, Dick disappeared, as did Geils, rumor had it wealthy but tired of the music business.

Jazz CDs - March 2002
Let's start off with two CDs from a top Hammond B3 organist carrying on the tradition of Jimmy Smith... Tony Monaco Trio - Burnin' Grooves - Summit Records DCD 304:
Tony Monaco - Master Chops T - Summit Records DCD 325:
Monaco's first commercial album last year was well-received and deserved it. It was quintessential organ-guitar-drums trio and really rocked. B3 masters such as Jimmy Smith and Joey DeFrancesco have taught and supported Monaco and the latter even wrote a statement for the new CD about what an incredible player he is. DeFrancesco also joins in on piano on many of the tracks of the first CD, making for a unique sound not often heard. Guitarist Paul Bollenback is no slouch either. And Tony does a few vocals as well. The nine tracks: Blues for T, Backward Shack, Gil Talk, Fungi Mama, Jumpin the Blues, Ashleen, Bluesette, Road Song, So Long for Now. The new CD has as its title a nickname given Tony - a Master Chops knows when to play and when to leave space in the music. His trio is joined here by trombonist Sarah Morrow, saxist Donny McCaslin, and trumpeter Kenny Rampton, his guitarist Derek DiCenzo doubles on steel drums, and Tony doubles on accordion (his original instrument as a child) as well as singing in a Sinatra-like voice on two of the 11 tracks. There are some lavish horn arrangements and overall the CD is quite a bit more sophisticated than the first album, good as that is. Tracks: Acid Wash, White Dude Special, Ya Bay BEE, Tramps Blues, Ode to Brother Jack, So May It Secretly Begin, Luck Be a Lady, Apple Honey, St. Thomas, Me and Mrs. Jones, Pick up the Pieces.

The result? 'People are People' - and the synthesis of the Soulfuric / Earnshaw sound. Released in May 02 on Soulfuric Deep, 'People Are People' is a rhodes and guitar led melodic diamond. Its dope chords and jazz-swing combined together to become last summer's full-size favourite on dancefloors from Manchester to Miami, and Melbourne. Earnshaw's latest and second Soulfuric release, 'Joyride' again blends stellar production, a breezy vocal hook and the signature Richard Rhodes solo. Made to be more peak-time but no less soulful; of creating 'Joyride' he reveals only that "…the title says it all…"
Out of the studio and behind the decks, Earnshaw has been in the mix for about three years - predominantly in clubs on the UK's south coast where he now lives. However, as a pianist, clarinettist, saxophonist and wannabe guitarist, it is little wonder that when it comes to music, his ultimate passion is for performing live on stage. "To perform soulful house music live is such a great buzz… when you've got your rhythm and horn sections and vocalist giving it some there is an incredible vibe between you and the crowd. Working in the studio is great fun, and to see people enjoying your music in clubs is brilliant, but performing it live is simply fantastic…

news from around the swing globe CHICAGO If you've presented jazz in a city for more than 50 years, you can rest assured that quite a collection of musicians will turn up for your 75th birthday. So was the case for Jazz Showcase presenter Joe Segal, who celebrated his 75th April 23 at Joe's Be-Bop Cafe on Navy Pier with the likes of Conte Candoli, Ed Thigpen and Sonny Turner. At the party, Segal discussed plans for his "75th Birthday Jazz Party At Sea," running Nov. 4-11 aboard the USS Norwegian Majesty. Sailing from San Juan, Puerto Rico, for a week-long cruise of the Caribbean islands, invited musicians on the cruise include Jimmy McGriff, Hank Crawford, David "Fathead" Newman, Benny Green's Trio, Oscar Brown Jr., Junior Mance, James Moody, Red Holloway, Willie Pickens, Larry Gray, Robert Shy, Henry Johnson, Freddy Cole and Ira Sullivan. For more information on the cruise, call (800) 433-0493 and ask for Kristol. Jason Koransky ATLANTA Magical best describes the moment when Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes took to the stage. He chose to play the much smaller "emerging artist" stage rather than the Main stage he was billed on, saying, "The piano sounded better." Valdes then drenched the crowd with piano virtuosity. As Valdes mingled with the crowd after the performance, it became clear that his performance was the gem of the festival. Kurt Gillon
