    Van Cliburn gold medalist performs
Last modified at 5:49 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 1998
A high school German teacher-turned-concert pianist who captured the 1997 Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will be featured in a concert at Grand Valley State University. Jon Nakamatsu will perform in a concert at 8 p.m. in the Louis Armstrong Theater on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Grand Valley is the only Michigan venue that has featured all three 1997 medalists of the Van Cliburn Piano Competition. Bronze medalist, Aviram Reichert of Israel kicked off the series in October 1997 and silver medalist Yakov Kasman of Russia performed in January. Nakamatsu, a native Californian who has no formal conservatory background, was the first American since 1982 to receive the Gold Medal. Among the prizes he was awarded were two years of international concert engagements and career management, a solo recording distributed worldwide on the Harmonia Mundi label, and a recital debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City. During the summer of 1997, Nakamatsu was invited to replace Vladimir Ashkenazy in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro as soloist with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berline, and performed at Tanglewood with the Boston Pops, the Klavier Festival Ruhr in Germany and the Montpellier Festival in France. He has also performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the New World Symphony and symphony orchestras of Dallas, Detroit, San Francisco and Milwaukee.
