Concert Hall grand setting for festival orchestra July 31, 2000 By Judith Reynolds
Special to the Herald An embarrassment of riches – Saturday night’s performance in the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College featured two conductors and three big works: Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, Poulenc’s Concerto in D Minor for two pianos, and Saint-Saens’ majestic Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, the "Organ Symphony." Thursday, Friday concerts were also outstanding The Thursday and Friday Music in the Mountains concerts also offered memorable performances. Thursday’s program in the Purgatory performance presented works by Haydn, Ravel and Copland. However, the night belonged to Israeli pianist Aviram Reichert, who ignited the audience with a vigorous reading of Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 2. Like a jet fueled rocket, Reichert played with an intensity that never let up. By the time he reached the finale, Reichert had established a perfect thrust of musical necessity. It was as if he, the orchestra, and the audience were on a launch pad lifting off. I’m serious. People around me marked the urgency of the music in a variety of ways. One woman down the row rocked her green plastic chair with such muscularity I thought she’d go overboard before the pianist did.

INKTRODUCTION. It is not uncommon for Americans to give ticker-tape parades to homecoming winning basketball teams like the Chicago Bulls or Olympic medallists; but for a pianist- that's practically unheard of. Well, that is exactly what happened to Van Cliburn, the tall Texan, when he won the First (ever) Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. A virtual unknown on Russian soil, he was soon to be the favourite going into the finals. The Russians were shocked but not surprised for Cliburn possessed charm, charisma, stature and not forgetting good technique. Practically every major classical recording star has won a major competition, Martha Argerich - the Chopin Competition; Vladimir Ashkenazy - 2nd Tchaikovsky Competition 1962; Murray Perahia - Leeds Piano Competition; Kristian Zimmerman - Chopin Competition and the list goes on and on. In fact it is now a great belief that one needs a major competition to bolster one's career. Major competitions like the Leeds, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, Tchaikovsky and Chopin Competitions give the winners major career breakthroughs, with engagements at various major halls and festivals, recording contracts with major labels like DG, EMI or Teldec (who can normally afford the crème de la crème). Past winners of the Van Cliburn competition in recent years have included Jose Fenghali and Alexei Sultanov.

National Arts Festival feast 30 June 2003 The National Arts Festival, a week-long explosion of theatre, music, dance, film and more, kicked off on Friday, 27 June, with up to 600 main and fringe events on offer at the Eastern Cape university town of Grahamstown. Started in 1974 as a project of the Grahamstown Foundation, and renamed the National Arts Festival last year, the week-long celebration of arts, usually known as the “Grahamstown Festival”, has evolved into the leading arts festival in Southern Africa. Now as many as 100 000 supporters flock to the picturesque university town (where Rhodes University is located) where up to 600 main and fringe events are on offer. Traditionally the festival is an opportunity for both new talent and established stars to take to the stage. The festival provides the opportunity for non-stop theatre, live music, a vibrant street and night life with techno raves, pubs, Mediaeval banquets, cyber cafes, buskers, walking tours, lectures and plenty of craft shopping. Grahamstown, founded in 1812 by Colonel John Graham as a military base during clashes with Xhosa inhabitants, grew into a commercial centre with the arrival of the 1820 British settlers. However, when the Frontier wars ended and when gold and diamonds were discovered, the town became less central. As a result, Grahamstown missed out on the modernization of the rapidly growing cities and today still resembles an English 19th Century cathedral town in the midst of the lush Eastern Cape vegetation.
