Exile from his own country after the Communist Revolution of 1917 forced an increased concentration on performance, as one of the most distinguished pianists of the day, activity that enabled him to support his family but left less time for his work as a composer. For practical reasons he eventually based himself in the United States, while keeping a villa in Switzerland. He died in Beverly Hills in 1943. Orchestral Music The second of Rachmaninov's four piano concertos holds an unchallenged position among romantic works in this form, its popularity closely rivalled by the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, for piano and orchestra. Sergei Rachmaninov Sergei Rachmaninov was not only one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century, but also the last great representative of the Russian Romantic tradition, exemplified especially by Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. Originally wealthy, Rachmaninov's family was reduced to straitened circumstances by his father's extravagance, the resulting strain eventually leading to his parents' separation. In 1885, after an initial period of study at the St Petersburg Conservatoire, Rachmaninov was sent to study the piano with the strict teacher Nikolai Zverev, whose regimen required that the boy's piano practice begin every morning at six o'clock. Living at Zverev's also gave the young Rachmaninov the opportunity to meet such impressive musicians as Anton Rubinstein, Anton Arensky and, most crucially, Tchaikovsky, at Sunday afternoon gatherings. In 1888 Rachmaninov started taking composition lessons with Taneyev and Arensky, and the increasing importance to him of composing led to a breach with the piano-oriented Zverev. Resources Menu Categorical Index Library Gallery Sergei Rachmaninoff Russian Composer Sergei Rachmaninoff was born on April 1, 1873, on a large estate near the ancient city of Novgorod, Russia. His father was an army officer and his mother was a wealthy heiress. His father gambled, drank, and squandered his wife's money. He deserted his family when Sergei was nine years old. By all accounts Young Sergei was a problem child, but had an extraordinary talent at the piano. At age nine he entered the College of Music in St. Petersburg, however because of his natural gift he did not bother to study. To solve his discipline problem Rachmaninoff moved to Moscow to live with Nikolai Zvereff of the Moscow Conservatory, one of the leading music teachers in Russia at the time. In 1892, Rachmaninoff graduated from the conservatory with high honors. In 1909, Rachmaninoff made his first visit to the United States and received an enthusiastic welcome. Afterwards, he visited America once every season. Rachmaninoff died on March 28, 1943 only a few weeks after attaining his American citizenship, and only five days before his seventieth birthday. Rachmaninov's gift for romantically yearning melodies also permeates his symphonies and songs. Born in Semyonovo, near Novgorod into a wealthy family with a strong military background, Rachmaninov had his first piano lessons with his mother at the family estate at Oneg. After a decline in their fortunes, the family moved to Saint Petersburg where Rachmaninov studied at the conservatory, before going on to Moscow, where he studied piano with Nikolay Zverev and Alexander Siloti. He also studied harmony with Anton Arensky and counterpoint with Sergei Taneyev. While still a student he wrote this one act opera Aleko, and the set of piano pieces, Op. 3, which contains the Prelude in C sharp minor, probably Rachmaninov's most popular piece for solo piano. Rachmaninov's first symphony was premiered in 1897, but was a complete flop with the critics. Some have suggested that this was as much due to the conducting of Alexander Glazunov, who may have been drunk, as it was to Rachmaninov. The bad reception led to a nervous breakdown and complete loss of self-confidence for Rachmaninov. He wrote very little music until he began a course of therapy with Nikolai Dahl. The result of these sessions was the Piano Concerto No. 2, which Rachmaninov dedicated to Dahl. The piece was very well received at its premiere, for which Rachmaninov played the solo part himself, and remains one of his most popular compositions, gaining some fame from its use in the film Brief Encounter.

Capsule Reviews Alkan: Le Festin d'Esope, Barcarolle, Quasi-Faust , and Symphonie BMG High Performance (HP 09026 63310-2) Raymond Lewenthal, pianist Lewenthal started the recent revival of interest in Alkan and now I understand why. His performances are truly magnificent. They sound impossible! You can't believe that there are no other pianists playing at the same time! In fact, sometimes it's hard to believe that there isn't an entire orchestra there, the sound is so full and lush! Lewenthal brings out the best in these compositions, which is very good indeed. And the remastering is excellent, too. Even the program notes, which are by Lewenthal himself, are fascinating and extremely well written. Also on this disc is the most interesting group composition, Hexameron , by Liszt, Thalberg, Pixis, Herz, Czerny and Chopin. Bach: 5 Versionen der Passacaglia BWV 582 (Signum SIG X93-00) This is a great idea, well executed: a CD with five versions of the famous "Passacaglia" by J.S. Bach. The first version is performed on a period organ by Christian Rieger. The second, a piano version by Eugene d'Albert (1864-1932) is performed by Ernst Breidenbach. Next comes a version for romantic organ by Franz Liszt (1811-1886) and Johann Gottlob Topfer (1791-1870). The fourth version is for piano, four hands, by Max Reger (1873-1916). The pianists are Oliver Kolb and Ernst Breidenbach. And, finally, Leopold Stokowski's (1882-1977) orchestral transcription performed by the Frankfurt State Orchestra conducted by Nikos Athinaos.

A few weeks later, the two artists got together to play Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3 - with Horowitz as the soloist and Rachmaninov as the "orchestra" at a second piano. Fifty years later, Horowitz performed this work once again in New York, but this time accompanied by the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. Classica presents the live recording of this celebrated event at which Horowitz, who had played the work with its creator and knew it like no other, performed the concerto for the very last time. Born in Kiev (Ukraine) in 1904, Vladimir Horowitz was one of the most acclaimed pianists of the 20th century. His phenomenal virtuosity, his willful interpretative style and his delight in publicity turned him into a world-class star who was known far beyond the confines of classical music. He died in New York on November 5, 1989. Sergei Rachmaninov visited the United States for the first time in the fall of 1909. For his lengthy concert tour, he had brought the recently completed Third Piano Concerto with him. The nearly three-quarter-hour long work stands out for its enormous technical demands as well as for its intricate structural design, which links the three movements together cyclically through the use of the same thematic material.
