Misery Loves Company I'm too happy to enjoy Rachmaninoff as much as I used to. When I was a suffering, insufferable teenager, he was my favorite composer. During my first semester in college, I wallowed in my misery to the tear-jerking melodies of this latter-day (1873-1943) romantic. Here was my soul-mate: a composer who shared my depressions, insecurities, and longings for acceptance and love. My roommate at the time - a vulgar, tasteless, oil tycoon's son from Wichita, Kansas - referred to this world-class composer, pianist and conductor as "Rocky." I almost killed him, but he dropped out of school, and my life, before I had the chance. I shall always love Rachmaninoff, but I doubt that I shall ever relate to his music quite as much as I did back then. Misery loves company, and Rachmaninoff kept me company, record after record, day after day. Starting with his most famous works - the Piano Concerto No. 2, the Symphony No. 2 , and the Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini - I expanded my record collection to include every Rachmaninoff composition that had ever been issued. I even learned to play his most famous piano piece, the Prelude in C-Sharp Minor, myself - no small feat for someone who rarely attempted any work which wasn't in C major. The Second Symphony, like the Second Piano Concerto, is one of Rachmaninoff's indisputable masterpieces, even though he himself didn't realize this. "I give my solemn word," he said after finishing it, "no more symphonies!" Nevertheless, he broke his promise - only once - some 30 years later.

SERGEI VASSILYEVITCH RACHMANINOV (1873 - 1943) Sergei Rachmaninov was undoubtedly one of the greatest performers ever and nobody who heard him playing Beethoven'sAppassionata, Chopin's B flat minor sonata or the Liszt transcriptions of Bach readily forgot him. Rachmaninov's father was an aristrocatric landowner who resigned his commission in the Cavalry's Guards of the Imperial Russian Army and retired to his estate in the Novgord district where he became involved in various musical activities. Lyou Boutakovia, Rachmaninov's mother had been born into a wealthy family and was also very interested in music so that when the four year old Sergei decided he wished to play the piano it was his mother who gave him his first piano lessons. Inside two months, Rachmaninov had achieved what a normal child would take two years to accomplish on the piano and was playing quite difficult works to visitors. Soon his mother engaged Anna Ornazkaya, an ex student of the St. John Petersburg Conservatoire as his teacher. Despite his interest in music Rachmaninov's father wanted him to enter the military academy at St Petersburg but his mother was equally insistent that he should go to the Anton Rubinstein Conservatoire in the same city. The matter was resplved when Rachmaninov obtained a scholarship to the conservatoire and as his father had squandered all his money he ws allowed to take it up.

The year 2004 will mark the 17th season for our program. The Classes are the final stage of the Festival of Music dedicated to Sergei Rachmaninov. RACHMANIA A Brief Personal Account on Sergei Rachmaninov (1873 – 1943) Rachmaninov might not have composed at a level that could have earned him a place in music history alongside such giant-figures as J.S. Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven, but his compositions can certainly command passions that are as hot as fevers in the hearts of those who love the piano. As Geoffrey Norris argued, “the piano figures prominently in Rachmaninov’s music, either as a solo instrument or as part of an ensemble. But he used his own skills as a performer not to write music of unreasonable, empty virtuosity, but rather to explore fully the expressive possibilities of the instrument” (Norris, Section 6). Indeed, the exceptional virtuosity of Rachmaninov allowed him to magicfy the expression of the piano to the instrument’s fullest extent through his usually lengthy and melodic compositions. Beethoven, Czerny, Liszt, Chopin, Anton Rubinstein, and all those who follow down the list expanded the limit of the piano via commanding techniques, but it was Rachmaninov who magicfy the keyboard with the wild excitments and unprecedent charisma of his compositions. Other composers created passion through their music, Rachmaninov created fevers via the piano. None of those who “suffers” from “Rachmania” should be infamiliar with Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.3 in D minor, Op.30 – what his fans usually nickname “Rach-3.” Lauded by Bryce Morrison as “arguably the most daunting and opulent of all piano concertos” (Morrison, p.4), “Rach-3” explores the limits of the piano to its innermost depth. Sergei Rachmaninov: Sonata for Piano and Cello in g minor, Opus 19 Born: 1 April 1873, Semyonova Died: 28 March 1943, Beverly Hills, California Composed: In the fall and early winter of 1901 for the cellist Anatoly Brandukov. Towards the end of the last movement, Rachmaninov wrote the date "November 20th". At the very end he wrote December 12th, showing that he revised the ending immediately after the first performance. Rachmaninov was 28 years old. First performance: In Moscow, December 2nd 1901 by Anatoly Brandukov, with the composer at the piano. Other works from immediately before: Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 18; Suite No. 2 for two pianos, Op. 17. Other works from immediately after: Spring, a cantata for bass, chorus, and orchestra, Op. 20; Twelve Songs for voice and piano, Op. 21. The composer and his music: In the wake of the successful completion of his Second Piano Concerto, Rachmaninov spent the summer of 1901 on the family’s country estate in the Tambov region, several days’ travel to the south of Moscow.
