Vocalise, Op. 34 No. 14, which started life as a song without text. The voice sings a vowel sound "ah" or "ooh" and is treated as an instrument. Rachmaninoff made the first non-vocal "arrangement" for orchestra and it is appropriately included in this compilation. It is a classic performance of a truncated version necessitated by limited playing time of a 78 rpm disc when the recording was made with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1929. Other orchestral versions included are Morton Gould's own transcription recorded in 1960 with his studio orchestra, and Yuri Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic playing Kurt Sanderling's arrangement, recorded in 1991. Both are richly voluptuous, Temirkanov the more leisurely by a small margin..

    Twentieth Century Russian Composers
    Sergei Rachmaninoff
Born: Oneg, district of Novgorod, April 1, 1873 Died: Beverly Hills, Cal., March 28, 1943 Having studied at the St. Petersburg and Moscow Conservatories, Rachmaninoff produced, at the age of twenty, one of the most popular and enduring piano pieces in the whole literature, the Prelude in C-sharp minor, Op. 3 no. 2 . Most of Rachmaninoff's best-known compositions were written before 1917, the year he left Russia to settle first in Switzerland, and later in the United States. His career focused mainly on his concertizing as a virtuoso pianist, although he was acknowledged as a fine conductor. Among his best works are his four piano concertos , including the well-known Piano Concerto no. 2 in C minor , which illustrates Rachmaninoff's penchant for "the big tune," much in the manner of Tchaikovsky , whom he greatly admired.

Complete interview with Sergei Rachmaninoff first published in May of 1927 in The Musical Observer
by Basanta Koomar Roy Among composers, Rachmaninoff looms large. While it seldom transpires that one gains equal distinction as a composer, and a pianist, yet this may be said of Rachmaninoff. In the course of the next hundred years or so the excellence of his piano playing will no doubt have become mythical, but the message of his musical compositions for the orchestra, for the voice and for the piano will still remain as cherished treasures of mankind.
One fine morning not long ago, I found myself, by appointment, in the spacious studio of Rachmaninoff overlooking the Hudson. In this quiet and contemplative room where the master did much of his composing, we talked of many things. In the course of our conversation I asked the master musician from Moscow how he first gained recognition as a composer, for this is one of the most difficult things a young composer has to contend with. Alkan: Le Festin d'Esope, Barcarolle, Quasi-Faust , and Symphonie BMG High Performance (HP 09026 63310-2) Raymond Lewenthal, pianist Lewenthal started the recent revival of interest in Alkan and now I understand why. His performances are truly magnificent. They sound impossible! You can't believe that there are no other pianists playing at the same time! In fact, sometimes it's hard to believe that there isn't an entire orchestra there, the sound is so full and lush! Lewenthal brings out the best in these compositions, which is very good indeed. And the remastering is excellent, too. Even the program notes, which are by Lewenthal himself, are fascinating and extremely well written. Also on this disc is the most interesting group composition, Hexameron , by Liszt, Thalberg, Pixis, Herz, Czerny and Chopin. Bach: 5 Versionen der Passacaglia BWV 582 (Signum SIG X93-00) This is a great idea, well executed: a CD with five versions of the famous "Passacaglia" by J.S. Bach. The first version is performed on a period organ by Christian Rieger. The second, a piano version by Eugene d'Albert (1864-1932) is performed by Ernst Breidenbach. Next comes a version for romantic organ by Franz Liszt (1811-1886) and Johann Gottlob Topfer (1791-1870). The fourth version is for piano, four hands, by Max Reger (1873-1916). The pianists are Oliver Kolb and Ernst Breidenbach. And, finally, Leopold Stokowski's (1882-1977) orchestral transcription performed by the Frankfurt State Orchestra conducted by Nikos Athinaos.

    Misery Loves Company
I'm too happy to enjoy Rachmaninoff as much as I used to. When I was a suffering, insufferable teenager, he was my favorite composer. During my first semester in college, I wallowed in my misery to the tear-jerking melodies of this latter-day (1873-1943) romantic. Here was my soul-mate: a composer who shared my depressions, insecurities, and longings for acceptance and love. My roommate at the time - a vulgar, tasteless, oil tycoon's son from Wichita, Kansas - referred to this world-class composer, pianist and conductor as "Rocky." I almost killed him, but he dropped out of school, and my life, before I had the chance. I shall always love Rachmaninoff, but I doubt that I shall ever relate to his music quite as much as I did back then. Misery loves company, and Rachmaninoff kept me company, record after record, day after day. Starting with his most famous works - the Piano Concerto No. 2, the Symphony No. 2 , and the Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini - I expanded my record collection to include every Rachmaninoff composition that had ever been issued. I even learned to play his most famous piano piece, the Prelude in C-Sharp Minor, myself - no small feat for someone who rarely attempted any work which wasn't in C major. The Second Symphony, like the Second Piano Concerto, is one of Rachmaninoff's indisputable masterpieces, even though he himself didn't realize this. "I give my solemn word," he said after finishing it, "no more symphonies!" Nevertheless, he broke his promise - only once - some 30 years later.

After having watched shine, I fell in love with Rachmaninoffs 3rd. However, no recording of this masterpiece was able to move me as much as Lang Langs interpretation. And my expectations were not disappointed when watching him in Vancouver 2003. He seems to well know about the dark sides and dangers of this piece, but in his interpretation, the good wins over the evil, and he plays with musical insight that is astonishing for his young age. And, no doubt, his technique is nothing but brilliant.
Give it a try, and youll fall in love with it!

I have never been able to make up my mind as to what was my true calling that of composer, pianist, or conductor . . . I am constantly troubled by the misgiving that, in venturing into too many fields, I may have failed to make the best use of my life. In my own compositions, no conscious effort has been made to be original, or Romantic or Nationalistic, or anything else. I write down on paper the music I hear within me, as naturally as possible...What I try to do, when writing down my music, is to make it say simply and directly that which is in my heart when I am composing. Music is enough for a lifetime; but a lifetime is never enough for music.
