His work is revered for enormous complexity and figurations as well as sweeping use of melody and tone color. After years of private lessons with Nikolai Zverev, Rachmaninoff entered the Moscow Conservatory of Music, studying under Alexander Siloti. While there he won many prizes for both performance and composition. Works from the period include his famous Prelude in C-sharp minor, his one act opera Aleko, and his first symphony in D-minor. He published his first piano concerto when he was only 18 years old. When the premiere of his first symphony failed, Rachmaninoff fell into a severe depression and was unable to compose. After some struggle (helped by one Dr. Nikolai Dahl and by a great visit to London), he was able to write his most popular Piano Concerto, no. 2 in C-minor. In 1909, Rachmaninoff completed what is commonly referred to as the "Nightmare Concerto." Written for his tour of a United States, this Piano Concerto in D-minor is over forty-five minutes in length! Because of its complexity, scope, and overall difficulty, it is often considered his magnum opus.

Majestic Theater, San Antonio, Texas, 16 October 1997. Ruth Laredo's rendering of Rachmaninoff's Second Concerto was excellent, and as this was the first time I heard it live, I was glad that it was she who was playing it. Although her reading of the score was a bit more formal than, say, a Rubinstein or Bolet, Laredo has this quality not much unlike Alexis Weissenberg does in the Rachmaninoff Third Concerto recording he made with Georges Pretre and the Chiacago Symphony in 1968. Her performance evokes in the listener a tenderness of feeling, especially in the second movement, that is not apparent in most performances. Most play this as though it is a musical cliche. Laredo, on the other hand, strikes every note as though each were a precious drop of a rare wine flowing from her fingertips, very sensuous and very dolcissimo . She plays the concerto with that quality of care few others even imagine possible - she can read the notes between the lines that elude other pianists. Further, she masterfully builds towards the climax in the third movement very forcefully, yet not pedantically; for her, this is no one-dimensional piece.

His father was an army officer and his mother was a wealthy heiress. His father gambled, drank, and squandered his wife's money. He deserted his family when Sergei was nine years old. By all accounts Young Sergei was a problem child, but had an extraordinary talent at the piano. At age nine he entered the College of Music in St. Petersburg, however because of his natural gift he did not bother to study. To solve his discipline problem Rachmaninoff moved to Moscow to live with Nikolai Zvereff of the Moscow Conservatory, one of the leading music teachers in Russia at the time. In 1892, Rachmaninoff graduated from the conservatory with high honors. In 1909, Rachmaninoff made his first visit to the United States and received an enthusiastic welcome. Afterwards, he visited America once every season. Rachmaninoff died on March 28, 1943 only a few weeks after attaining his American citizenship, and only five days before his seventieth birthday. His father and grandfather were already very good amateur pianists, thus Sergei followed in their footsteps, as he began piano lessons at a very young age. Although he was born with that musical exposure, he was expected to go on to military school for a career there. At the age of nine, Rachmaninoff traveled to St. Petersburg due to his father's ill judgement with money, as he lost the family fortune. There, Sergei entered as a scholarship student at the conservatory. However, Rachmaninoff was not a good student, as he often cut class and wandered about the grand city, sometimes even spending his time at the skating rink. His grandmother always took him to church services, where he admired the singing and the tolling of the bells. Even though he deeply enjoyed music, his teachers foresaw no such relation for him with music. Later, however, when he entered the Moscow conservatory at fifteen, he discovered new horizons when he added composition to his piano playing. At Moscow, Rachmaninoff lived at the home of his teacher, the great Nicolai Zverev, who supervised every detail of his students' lives. He was born Apr. 1 (N.S.), 1873, at his family's estate, Semyonovo, in the Russian province of Novgorod. At about the age of 5, he began piano studies with his mother. In 1882 he entered the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, but he transferred 3 years later to the Moscow Conservatory. There he studied under the rigorous supervision of Nikolai Zverev, through whom he met many of the most important Russian composers of the time. Tchaikovsky , especially, exercised a major influence on him. He graduated in piano in 1891 and in composition with the Great Gold Medal in 1892.
