Composed by a troubled Schumann as he recovered from his first deep depression, the "Symphony No. 2" particularly in the adagio third movement includes some of the most moving pages he ever penned. Next, internationally acclaimed keyboard virtuoso Maurizio Pollini takes the stage for a performance of Johannes Brahms ' "Piano Concerto No. 2." Inspired by Brahms ' visits to the splendors of Italy, the rich work is permeated with an age-old German nostalgia and affection for its southern neighbor.

The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall. There was a time in the United States that one spoke of "The Big Three" when discussing American orchestras. The reference was to the country's oldest symphonic ensembles the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and The Philadelphia Orchestra. For a very long time they constituted a very exclusive club. It was not until after the Second World War that two other American orchestras earned a place at this exalted level, and the talk switched from "The Big Three" to "The Big Five."
The two that were elevated were the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and The Cleveland Orchestra. They had always been good orchestras and even respected orchestras but not great orchestras. The tide turned when each was put in the care of master conductors Fritz Reiner in Chicago and George Szell in Cleveland. They made the difference.
Both Reiner and Szell settled in the United States and became citizens Reiner in the 1920s and Szell later, after the outbreak of World War II. Reiner began his American career with two then-provincial, American orchestras the Cincinnati and Pittsburgh Symphonies while Szell joined the conducting staff of The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.

Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Webern, etc / Maurizio Pollini > Customer Review #3: Recommendation from a Classical Novice
I love certain Classical music but definitely do not have the experience and education to give an experts opinion on this. But sometimes a novices opinion is a good counterpoint to the experts, so here I go. I bought this CD because it showed up on some lists of great Classical piano, which I love. I wont comment on the Webern and Boulez because quite frankly I dont understand them. The Stravinsky and Prokofiev pieces are utterly amazing. Think of Jimmi Hendrix playing guitar on "All Along the Watchtower" (this might be a first in a Classical review!) You dont have to be a Classical snob to appreciate the virtuosity and beauty of the playing on these pieces. The Stravinsky, in particular, is outstanding. As said in previous reviews, if this isnt perfection then its as close as anything is going to get. The liner notes compare this performance to Bob Beamons long jump in the Mexico City Olympics, and it seems an apt analogy.

Chopin: Etudes Op.10/Op.25 > Customer Review #1: "Piano experimentation" pieces played perfectly

Chopins Etudes are very complex piano pieces; this recording gives you the chance to appreciate them in the perfect masterful rendition of Maurizio Pollini. Its truly amazing to listen this recording for the first time - hearing the virtuoso pieces unravel in a blizt of intense, powerful storm of piano music. Chopins Etudes give us a glimpse into the way he, as a composer, explored the capabilities of his favourite instrument, the piano. The Etudes arent the most delicate, raffined Chopin compositions.. But heck, they sure are energetic, enlightening, and Chopinistic! This recording proves to be a "must-have" for Pollini fans, piano students, and piano lovers in general. Highly recommended to anyone familiar with Chopins work, but not these particular pieces - theyre a discovery to be heard and enjoyed time and time again!

Chopin, Debussy Maurizio Pollini (piano). RFH, June 5 th , 2003 (CC)
This recital was dedicated to the memory of Italian composer Luciano Berio, who died on May 27th. Although there was no contemporary music on Pollini’s programme, he has always been a champion of the avant-garde, including in his repertoire music by several of his countrymen (recordings of Manzoni and Nono spring to mind, as does a Barbican performance of some Sciarrino ). Pollini cares about the music of our most recent past: and the dedication of his recital to Berio’s memory seemed to spur Pollini to give his very best (and his very best is unparalleled in pianistic circles today). Pollini’s reputation in Chopin has always been up there with the greats, ever since his victory in the Warsaw Chopin Competition in 1960. Perhaps that explained the sell-out audience. The actual sequence of pieces was intensely satisfying, intimate Nocturnes Opp. 32 and 55 sandwiching the A flat Ballade , followed by the Barcarolle and the Berceuse contrasting with the final C sharp minor Scherzo.

Varese’s , played by a fragment of the London Symphony Orchestra, was given in a performance that was both athletic and precise. Although Boulez’ conducting was tight but expansive the subtlest of hand gestures sufficed to elicit a perfect response from the players; the effect was to draw out the tension between the silence and the sound in an electrifying way. It is hard to imagine this radical work being given a more definitive performance, with conductor and orchestra completely in unison in realising this intimate but intense composition.
After their vigorous and highly concentrated playing of the Varese, Bartok’s

Maurizio Pollini
Maurizio Pollini (born January 5 ) is an Italian pianist and conductor Born in Milan , Pollini studied under Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli among others. In 1960 he won the Warsaw Chopin Competition. He is noted for his performances of modern pieces such as Pierre Boulez Piano Sonata No. 2 as well as more traditional repertoire. He has conducted both opera and orchestra l music, sometimes leading the orchestra from the keyboard in concerto s.
Recordings
One of a handful of students of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli , Pollini exhibits a precise technique and an emotional restraint that are reminiscent of the master. His early performances of Chopin were widely praised and won for him the Warsaw Chopin Competition in 1960 (where Argerich also competed). Excerpts from the competition are available on a CD from LaserLight 15961 and a second CD on Polskie Nagrania. These are cool, assertive, confident, and somewhat aggressive readings. Pollini also has recorded more Chopin in the studio for DG (for example, the Etudes on 413794, Preludes on 413796, and Sonatas on 415346). The earlier sets, in particular the Etudes and Preludes, are best for their clarity and direct approach. The later recordings are heavily edited and less persuasive. Pollini's late Beethoven Sonatas, on DG 429569 and 429570, are very good. His late Schubert Sonatas, D 958, 959, and 960, on DG 427327 and 427326, are deft and restrained and show great insight.

The Italian pianist Maurizio Pollini was just 18 when, with the superb Philharmonia Orchestra and the Polish-born conductor Paul Kletzki, he made this astonishing recording of Chopin's First Concerto at Abbey Road Studios in April 1960. He had just won the Warsaw International Chopin Competition (whose jury included Artur Rubinstein, Nadia Boulanger and Wiltold Malcuzynski) and a great future was assured.
On its release, the recording was immediately hailed as a triumph and has subsequently achieved classic status. It is coupled with a recital of solo works by Chopin, recorded 8 years later, in 1968, in Paris: 4 Nocturnes, the G minor Ballade and the 'Heroic' Polonaise.
