KNITTEL'S WORLD PREMIERE IN WARSAW
The world premiere of Krzysztof Knittel's work "El maale rahamim" dedicated to the memory of the Jewish victims of the massacre at Jedwabne took place on 10 July 2001 in the Evangelical Church in Warsaw. The work's title stems from the first words of the Hebrew prayer for the dead; it lasts for 12 minutes and is scored for choir and orchestra (Camerata Silesia and National Symphony Orchestra of the Polish Radio conducted by Wojciech Michniewski). In the spring of 2001 Knittel wrote music for Agnieszka Arnold's film Neighbors and at that time was deeply moved by compassion for the victims of the murder.
Knittel's Manuscript of the String Quartet.

The composer stated: " I examined in detail various reports by the witnesses of the crime in Jedewbne, also including the reports by the participants in the crime. It was terrifying. I was ashamed and thought that it is a disgrace for us, Poles, regardless of the fact that the German soldiers and police were present. As a Pole, I felt bad about this. I decided to compose a work dedicated to the victims because I felt that I had to do something more than composing the music for the film He continued: " I do it not only for the victims. During the war many Poles were murdered. I do it for another reason: for the future, for my children. I do not want to live in a country that is racist, that is dominated by Polish chovinism and nationalism. I want our country to be open and friendly to all the nations, all the races

Edgar G. Ulmer is famous principally for The Black Cat (1934) and Detour (1945). These stylish and eccentric works have achieved cult status, but Ulmer's other films remain relatively obscure and his reputation is far from assured. Although he designed for Max Reinhardt's theater, served his apprenticeship with no less a master than F. W. Murnau (notably on Der letzte Mann [1924] and Sunrise Menschen am Sonntag (1929), Ulmer has not received comparably wide-ranging respect. This is due to a career spent mostly in Poverty Row cinema: after an early success at Universal with The Black Cat Hannibal (1960) to a nudist movie ( Naked Venus [1958]). He directed his last film, The Cavern , in Italy in 1964; several years later, he suffered a crippling stroke, and died in 1972.

BERGER-ORSUA, Marianne "MeMe" Marianne was born in London, England in 1920 and lived there through World War II. She immigrated with her former husband to Santa Barbara in 1952. Together they established "House of Donann" Hair Salon. Through Marianne's artistic abilities and skill, House of Donann was a successful business for 45 years. Marianne's spirituality, healing and counseling skills helped many. She strived and enjoyed doing it. Marianne is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Robert Orsua, who was constantly by her side daily at Mission Terrace the past four years. She is also survived by her two daughters, Glynis Jacobs, living in England, and Varni Learned who is still hairstyling at the "Big Victorian House" on Cota St. She is also survived by Varni's two daughters, Alanna and Ivy Learned. Marianne peacefully passed on Jan 5, 2004 with family by her side. She will be incredibly missed, but we know she is flying high with all her angels and we will all be together again one day.

http://pwpl.org/collections/media/video/film-noir.html
Film Noir: The Dark Side of the Screen The library's VHS collection offers a great selection of the hard-boiled crime movies known as "film noir." The seeds of film noir were sewn in the pulp novels of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and James M. Cain, and in gangster films like Little Caesar, The Public Enemy and Scarface. The genre blossomed after World War II, when patriotic spirit degenerated into disillusioned cynicism. Typical noir stories trap detectives and criminals in dense webs of intrigue, often spun by femmes fatales. Noir City is photographed at night in stark black and white, steeped in shadow and fog. Pioneering noir directors of the 1940s include John Huston, Edward Dmytryk, Fritz Lang, Robert Wise, Orson Welles, and Joseph H. Lewis. In the 1950s, Robert Aldrich and Stanley Kubrick perpetuated the genre. Actors who came to embody the noir style include Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, John Garfield, Robert Ryan, and Richard Widmark; Barbara Stanwyck, Jane Greer, Ann Savage, and Lana Turner embodied the femme fatale architype. Modern directors whose films pay homage to classic film noir include Martin Scorsese, Joel and Ethan Coen, James Foley, Stephen Frears, John Dahl, and Quentin Tarantino.
