His greatest achievements have been not as a pianist, but in the establishing and organizing of The Russian National Orchestra. On these records we will meet the pianist - and not the conductor. With his 40 years Pletnev is one of the youngest in this collection of the pianists of the century. The music on the CD's was recorded between 1978 - 1990, and is of course, of perfect technical standard. The music is russian - in every sense of meaning. Maybe Pletnev's own arrangements of Tchaikowsky's Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty tend to be a little kitch'ian, but in the complete Les Saisons op. 8 he is taking full revenge. Platnev is playing with technical brilliance - but also outwards, as shown in his interpretation of Tchaikowsky's 2nd piano concerto.

Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ludwig van Beethoven Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin ... Robert Schumann , and Sergei Rachmaninov were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano.

ON THE EVE OF THE XII INTERNATIONAL TCHAIKOVSKY CONTEST
    (The contest's laureate Mikhail Pletnev)
L.Roshina Mikhail Pletnev who won the First Prize in the 1978 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, has been a professional musician for 25 years. In 1990 he organized and headed the first Russian non-state symphonic orchestra (The Russian National Orchestra) that became one of the leading orchestras in the country. At the age of 16 Mikhail Pletnev started his career as a pianist after in 1973 he won the Grand Prix at the International Contest of Music Youth in Paris. He was studying at the Moscow Conservatory under the prominent Russian pianists, professors Yakov Fliyer and Lev Vlasenko. Lev Vlasenko wrote about his apprentice as a conceptual musician whose manner of playing amazed with its personal attitude to every play performed and careful and hearted attitude to a close composer. He said that in such music Mikhail Pletnev discovered the most unexpected and touching details. Mikhail Pletnev was awarded two Russia's State Premiums in 1982 as a pianist and as a conductor of the Russian National Orchestra. This year is not less significant for him, since he was awarded the Premium of President Vladimir Putin.

Pletnev conducted the RNO for ten years, then turned the reins over to Vladimir Spivakov, a violinist who has proven his worth on the podium. The RNO came to Carnegie Hall on February 15, with Spivakov wielding the baton and Pletnev as piano soloist. Rachmaninov's Op 42 and Op 43 are both in variation form and well worth a comparison. The Corelli Variations are not an original theme by Corelli but an Iberian folk song. The theme itself is choice because it is memorable but any set of variations has to be carefully planned to make a unified whole or else we merely have a theme and, in this case, 22 miniature pieces based on the same thematic material. You never get the time to settle into one of these little pieces before the tempo and mood changes and you feel you it is another piece. Somehow, the famous Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op 43

Schumann, Tchaikovsky Mikhail Pletnev (piano). Barbican Hall, Sunday, March 23 rd , 2003 (CC)
Mikhail Pletnev’s recital, recorded for telecast on BBC 4, showed once again this pianist’s unpredictability. Heart-stoppingly beautiful moments vied with Pletnev the eccentric to leave one frustrated. Excerpts from Schumann’s , Op. 99 boded well. The eloquent simplicity of the chordal world of the first Albumblatt complemented the fast and even second. Point-making threatened to steal in the third Albumblatt , however, a trait which was to be much more marked in the Fantasie . Perhaps it was the fourth (Sehr langsam) which was the most successful of Op. 99, Pletnev highlighting the harmonically advanced language. The Fantasie brought out the best and worst of Pletnev. Unfortunate, perhaps, that Uchida recently gave an unforgettable performance of this same piece over the road at the QEH recently: memories were still fresh. Two facets of Pletnev’s interpretation seemed the greatest hindrance: over-pedalling and a tendency towards the somnambulistic. The approach to the climax of the march was particularly cacophonous and distracting. Some concerns over Pletnev’s realisation of Schumann’s voice-leading early in the performance were confirmed by the finale, where harmonic directionality was more confused than veiled and beautiful. Uchida strived to bring the listener close to the composer; this, however, was very much Schumann arranged by Pletnev.
