Mikhail Pletnev Mikhail Pletnev is an artist who defies simple classification, whose technique and genius as pianist, conductor and composer continue to enchant and amaze. The child of musicians, Mr. Pletnev was born in Archangel, Russia, and displayed exceptional musical talent from an early age. Growing up in Kazan, he transferred to the Central School of Music at the age of 13 and, in 1974, entered the Moscow Conservatory, studying under Jakob Flier and Lev Vlasenko. He was the Gold Medal and First Prize winner of the 1978 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow when he was only 21. His prize earned him early international recognition and, in 1988, an invitation from President Gorbachev to perform at the superpower summit in Washington. Renowned as one of the great pianists of our time, Mr. Pletnev continues to perform regularly as soloist and recitalist in the music capitals and major festivals of Europe, North America, the Far East and his native Russia. Having toured the United States extensively as conductor with the Russian National Orchestra, the new millennium marked his return to the country as pianist performing recitals in Chicago and in New York at Carnegie Hall in November 2000. He also received rave acclaim as soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin in Washington, D.C., and on tour throughout Europe. He has also appeared as soloist with Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Chailly, Kurt Sanderling, Christian Thielemann, Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Alain Lombard, Emmanuel Krivine, Herbert Blomstedt with the San Francisco Symphony and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Lorin Maazel and the Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphony, Kent Nagano and the Hallé Orchestra Manchester, Daniele Gatti and the Santa Cecilia Symphony, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Libor Pesek and the Czech Philharmonic, Ivan Fisher and the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Muhai Tang and the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Carlo Maria Giulini and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Mstislav Rostropovich and the Russian National Orchestra, and Valery Gergiev and the Staatskapelle Berlin.

Portrait Mikhail Pletnev
Piano and conducting at the 64th latitude
His career began with the first prize at the 1978 Tchaikovsky Competition. Today, Pletnev performs with conductors such as Abbado, Chailly, and Blomstedt, and in all major concert halls. The other side of the coin is the shyness. When Pletnev acknowledges the applause, his slender hands folded together, he almost seems to be apologizing for what he has done. For having shown that one can bring keys, hammers, and strings onto a wavelength with the thoughts and flashes of insight that Pletnev finds in the notes. In 1990 Mikhail Pletnev founded the Russian National Orchestra in Moscow, and in a very short time fashioned it into a top-notch ensemble. The orchestra has an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. Concert tours have led it to legendary venues from the Concertgebouw to Carnegie Hall. It was the first Russian orchestra to make guest appearances in Israel and in the Vatican. In his free time, Pletnev goes skiing in the Alps. At rather high speeds, as he admits. And with a certain predilection for regions in which the air becomes thinner and colder. Someone who comes from above the sixty-fourth degree of latitude prefers it a bit more uncomfortable.

A pianist is a person who plays the piano A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists. A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ludwig van Beethoven Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin ... Robert Schumann , and Sergei Rachmaninov were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including jazz classical music , and all sorts of popular music Well-known or influential classical pianists:
