It never gets easy, but the more years you spend in front of an audience, the better your focus becomes. Audiences will get a chance to judge for themselves this month, when three pianists at different stages of their careers perform at "PianoFest," a minifestival of three solo concerts presented by the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. The series will begin April 4 with a performance by James Lent, who is just at the beginning of his career. Then a second concert April 6 features Lang Lang, who has exploded to fame in the past three years. The festival closes April 18 with Murray Perahia, who has been a regular on the international concert scene for more than three decades. JoAnne Ewan-Kroger, director of performing arts at the center, said "PianoFest" was conceived to present three pianists performing in deliberate order.

In the more than 30 years he has been performing on the concert stage, Murray Perahia has become one of the most sought-after and cherished pianists in our time. He performs in all of the major international music centers and with every leading orchestra. In September 2000, he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, with whom he toured as conductor and pianist throughout the United States in March 2001, and in Japan and South East Asia in April of 2002. In the 2002-03 season, he joins them for three concerts in London as well as tours of Spain and the Baltic region. by Paul Myers by Murray Perahia THE GOLDBERG VARIATIONS AND MURRAY PERAHIA Bach described the Goldberg Variations, his seemingly innocent tune followed by thirty variations, merely as a keyboard "practice-piece," composed for his talented protégé Johann Gottlieb Goldberg to play on the harpsichord. But this scholarly exercise demands the kind of virtuoso skills to strike fear in the heart of any keyboard performer. Dexterity, speed, lightness of touch, dazzling independent fingerwork and, ultimately, deeply felt musicianship are essential ingredients of a reading. In addition, the passion and drama in Bach's music must be readily tangible. The Goldberg Variations remained for many years a greatly admired but often avoided masterpiece. Over-respectful scholarship and careful musicianship had made it into one of those Great Works that few players were anxious to perform in public and only dedicated listeners really wanted to hear. Then, in 1955, an interpretation by the then-virtually-unknown pianist Glenn Gould forced musicians and listeners, fans and critics alike, to reassess Bach's monumental achievement. And now, nearly half a century later, Murray Perahia, unquestionably one of the greatest pianists of his generation, gives his own reading of this cornerstone work. As the producer of some of Murray Perahia's early recordings, more than twenty years ago, it is hard to describe how heartwarming it is to hear the joy, pathos, audacity, drama, triumph, thoughtful reflection, and breathtaking virtuosity he brings to his deeply musical interpretation of this great work, helping to remind us why music is the most moving of all the arts.

Franz Schubert, Schubert Piano Sonatas D. 958, D. 959 and D. 960 [Murray Perahia, piano] (Sony, 2003) I don't know whether I am the only reviewer regularly to encounter charming coincidences when writing reviews. In my case, something often seems to happen that links up directly with whatever I happen to be reviewing. In this case, while reading the CD booklet I discovered that Franz Schubert composed these pieces, his final three sonatas, in the year of life that remained to him after completing his second and final song-cycle, the Winterreise Winterreise Perhaps Schubert knew, in those highly productive and innovative months following the fall of 1827, when Winterreise was finished, that he had only a year to live. If he was so immensely hard-working at that time, it was possibly because he had a premonition that death was not far away. Certainly he knew that he had caught syphilis ten years earlier, and the probable progress of this disease must have been known to him. There is, of course, a great temptation for critics and reviewers to write with hindsight. When Beethoven wrote his late string quartets, he may not have realized that they were so very late, but coming, as we now know they did, close to the end of his life, their lyrical ecstasy acquires an enhanced meaning. I can never listen to Mozart's last three symphonies, composed in a burst of tremendous creative energy, without wondering whether he had any suspicion that there would be no symphony to build on the greatness of the "Jupiter." When Richard Strauss wrote "Vier Letzte Lieder" (Four Last Songs), he was presumably not planning to write any more.

This 2 nd disc has nos. 2,4, and 5. The recorded sound is superb, as it was for the first disc. Not unexpected, Perahia is always "right on the money." Tempos, inflections, rubato, and intonation are perfect. Good taste just leaps out of the speakers. Yet, although satisfied, I was never moved by Perahia's versions. I felt that I'd heard it all before. As an example, hearing the beginning of the 2nd English Suite, my mind wandered to the Woody Allen movie, Crimes and Misdemeanors. Sometimes, I thought of Schiff's recordings on London. I simply did not find anything truely distinctive or unique. To be sure, this is fine Bach by a master pianist. I'll keep listening with the hope that distinctive treasures are there to be found. If that does not happen, I still have an expert set which is one notch above the set by Schiff. Bei Murray Perahia scheint dies tatsächlich zuzutreffen. "In der Musik gibt es einen Gott, der ist Bach", sagte der renommierte Pianist einmal in einem Amazon-Interview. "Alles, was Bach gemacht hat, selbst die kleinste Übung, hat etwas von ganz großer Kunst", sagt Perahia, "er war wohl ein Mensch mit einer ganz klaren, ja transzendentalen Vision." Und diese Übersinnlichkeit von Bachs Musik hat Perahia über seine schwerste Krise hinweggeholfen. Wegen einer Entzündung am Daumen musste er vier Jahre aussetzen. "Das war ein Schock." 1996 feierte Perahia dann sein Comeback. Seinem Spiel war anzumerken, dass er einen Reifeprozess durchgemacht hatte. "Etwas im Klang hat sich verändert", befand Perahia selbst. Mehr Tiefe, bescheinigen auch die Kritiker. Anscheinend braucht man selbst als Musiker nicht immer ein Instrument dafür, bei Perahia jedenfalls reichte die Krise bereits aus - und das Klavier-Spielen im Kopf. Am 3. Februar bringt Perahia - wie sollte es anders sein - Bach mit nach Hamburg: das Cembalokonzert d-Moll BWV 1052. Da er kein strenger Purist historischer Aufführungspraxis ist, spielt er es auf dem Klavier. Schwerfälliger und pompöser wird es dennoch nicht. Perahia ist bekannt dafür, dass er die Tasten mit britischem Understatement streichelt. Das Ergebnis ist ein transparenter Klang, mit dem Perahia Bachs Werken immer wieder eine innere Ruhe verleiht. Begleitet wird der in London lebende Pianist von der Camerata Salzburg, die außerdem Haydns Oxford-Sinfonie und Mozarts "Kleine Nachtmusik" spielt - bloß nicht einschlafen!
