Perahia: variations on a theme of exciting By Melinda Bargreen

Seattle Times music critic NANA WATANABE Pianist Murray Perahia played an all-German program of imaginative vision. E-mail this article Print this article Search archive There are pianists who make you think, and pianists who stir your blood with their passionate approach to music. And then there is Murray Perahia, who does both, with a technique that makes anything possible. Perahia, at the top of his form, thrilled his Meany Theater audiences Tuesday with the closing concert in this season's President's Piano Series. This performance should have convinced the pianist to make this great work a permanent part of his repertoire. Concert review
Murray Perahia, pianist, in President's Piano Series recital; Meany Theater, Tuesday night. The results were consistently exciting, as listeners waited for what might come next, and reveled in the emotional energy of the performance. There was much to love in the opening Beethoven sonata, a work Perahia has just edited as part of a major project (the Henle Urtext Edition). Perahia buffed and polished this sonata to a rare state of grace, never overplaying it and giving it a light delicacy that made the dramatic passages all the more startling.

Recording of the Month  - May 1998 Why can´t all pianorecords be as good as this ? - Stephen Plaistow
Yes why indeed. Murray Perahia's first journey into the baroque repertoire has certainly left an impact on it's audience, as profound as any. After a thumbinjury that fortunatly did not affect Mr. Perahia's musicianship in any other way than giving him the opportunity to devote himself to the studies of new repertoire, this remarkable pianist has come back with what has proved to be one of 1997's finest pianorecordings. For this disc he was, not surprisingly, honoured with the prestigious Gramophone award in the "Instrumental" category. Personally, I first heard the record in a store in London in the spring of 97 while I, with some dismay, was watching the long line in front of the cash register. Quite by chance I went to the nearest listening station where this disc was among the choices. It took me, I think, only a few seconds to absolutely love Perahia's Händel suites. I still shudder at the thought of not having come across this disc, although the mediacoverage it recieved later on surely would have caught my attention. The Händel suites have regretably been standing in the monumental shadow of Bach's more well known cousins, and have never really been given the attention and admiration they surely deserve. Not untill Richter and Gavriliov with their great performances of them, made the musicworld open it's eyes. Now it is Perahia that again have brought some well deserved attention upon them, through his brilliant recording.

The Murray Perahia recital at Stanford University took place at exactly the same time as pianist Dubravka Tomsic's appearance with the Monterey Symphony. Therefore, Erik Dyar agreed to step in as a guest critic for the event. Mr. Dyar, although an architect by profession is an accomplished pianist and played a solo recital in Carmel, California earlier this year.
Those people fortunate enough to be present to hear a recital by pianist Murray Perahia at Memorial Auditorium on the Stanford University Campus Sunday afternoon, were treated to a rare and richly satisfying musical experience. Setting the mood for the main work to come, the concert began with four Bach-Busoni Chorale Prelude transcriptions Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 645, Nun komm der Heiden Heiland, BWV 659, Nun freut euch, lieben Christen, BWV 734, Ich ruf' zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 639

Murray Perahia continues to meet and surpass expectations of being one of the very best of the world’s best pianists. His breathtaking recital before a rapturous audience of piano aficionados in the intimate confines of Lincoln Recital Hall on the campus of Portland State University certainly reinforced this impression. It was indeed a special occasion to hear such a great artist as Perahia in a rather small, yet acoustically sound, hall instead of the 2,000+-seat concert halls in which I had heard him previously. Appreciation must go out to the organizers of the Portland State University Piano Recital Series who were able to bring him here, and who present, it must be said, one of the very best piano recital series in the country. On this occasion, Perahia returned to the composers that have been close to him throughout his career: Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms. Although, to say he is a specialist in this music, would exclude Bach, Mozart and Schubert for whom he is just as well known.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations (1741) has rightly entered the domain of musical myth. By all evidence Bach believed that music was essential to display and understand the majesty of God's creation. Music was of ethical and even cosmological importance for him. The Bach expert John Butt states, in Bernard Sherman's Inside Early Music (Oxford University Press, 1997), that Bach "sees music as being part of a mechanical process by which humankind comes to terms with the divine....It's organization, what you might think of as cultured religion, as opposed to personal and more immediate religion." Butt views Bach's type of faith as "one that looks for godly order on earth" and thus in some ways is allied to what today is called pantheism. This noted expert concludes that Spinoza's term, "'the intellectual love of God' seems remarkably appropriate for Bach." Of course, many listeners enjoy the Goldberg Variations for more earthly purposes. The conductor Leonard Bernstein claimed that he and his wife considered the opening aria "their song," a kind of love theme. Others play it as exalted background music, which may be closer to one legend about the work's origins. An early biographer of Bach posited that it was written for one of the composer's gifted students, named Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, to play for the Russian ambassador to the Saxon court, who suffered from insomnia. The notion of this "Aria and 30 Variations," written for a harpsichord with two keyboards, soothing a distressed diplomat to sleep has charmed generations of music lovers.

Mendelssohn: Piano Concertos > Customer Review #1: Must have for any classical collection

This CD is pretty close to perfect. The concertos are beautiful, and theres really nothing like them. The orchestra never drowns out the piano (due to the fabulous conducting of Marriner), and Perahia can really bring out the beauty of any song and any piano. The solo pieces on this CD are pretty good. Perahia brings out the melody very well on the Prelude and Fugue. And the Variations Serieuses are wonderful to listen to. However, the only reason I didnt give this CD 5 stars is the Rondo Capriccioso. At the opening Andante section, Perahia doesnt really play it fast enough, so the first two minutes of the piece sound like a beautiful dirge. The Rondo section, however, is absolutely perfect. His speed is precise and consistant, and his octaves at the end really add a great "bang" ending to the song, and for that matter, the CD. Not only was Mendelssohn a master, but so were Perahia and Marriner. This is a must have for any classical lover!
