Quartet returns to brilliance
String group's latest 1st violinist blends in By Mark Stryker/Free Press Music Writer
Monday, March 10, 2003
Setting aside briefly the exquisite reading of Henri Dutilleux's spellbinding quartet, the most thrilling thing about the Tokyo String Quartet's concert Saturday was that the group sounded like the Tokyo String Quartet. This is news. The Tokyo quartet had always placed its biggest aesthetic bet on a remarkably homogenous and sumptuous tonal blend, instrumental finesse and a tasteful interpretive flair. When a new first violinist was needed in 1996, the group gambled on Mikhail Kopelman, hoping his Slavic pedigree might inject new energy and ideas into the dialogue. But a string quartet is a fragile balance of personalities, and the risk never paid off. Kopelman proved inconsistent and willful. The quartet lost its polished veneer without leveraging any compensatory artistry. Canadian Martin Beaver replaced Kopelman last year, joining violinist Kikuei Ikeda, violist Kazuhide Isomura and cellist Clive Greensmith. Bach was a great admirer of the Italian composers of his day and, in accordance with the then accepted practice, he freely appropriated Italian themes, stylistic ideas, indeed entire works for his own purposes. The Italian Concerto , a brilliant reworking of a violin concerto borrowed from Vivaldi, is considered a superb example of Bach’s genius in marrying the clarity and melodic transparency of the Italian style with the sturdy musical architecture of the German school. LUDWIG van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas constitute a milestone in the history of keyboard music, providing a bridge between the harmony and elegance of the Classical period and the emotionalism and heroic sweep of the Romantic era. Internationally acclaimed concert pianist Jon Kimura Parker was born, raised and educated in Vancouver. A true Canadian ambassador of music, Mr. Parker has given two command performances for Queen Elizabeth II, and has performed for the Prime Ministers of Canada and Japan and for the United States Supreme Court.
A remarkably versatile artist, Mr. Parker has, in recent seasons, performed in Carnegie Hall (with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Warsaw Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra), Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Sydney Opera House; toured the Canadian Arctic as part of “Piano Six” performing the music of Beethoven, Chopin, Nirvana and Alanis Morissette on an electronic keyboard for more than 1,000 Inuit school students; jammed with Doc Severinsen and the original “Tonight Show” Orchestra; been profiled in “Newsweek” magazine in Australia; and given an impromptu concert at the Victoria Falls Hotel while on safari in Zimbabwe. He also played himself in a guest appearance on the children’s program “Under the Umbrella Tree” on the Disney Channel.
Equally eclectic in recording, Mr. Parker’s recordings for Telarc include a solo Chopin album, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev piano concerti with Andre Previn, and a venture into comedy as Peter Schickele’s pianistic sparring partner in the “Concerto for Two Pianos vs. Orchestra” by the fabled P.D.Q. Bach. Telarc has also released a recording of Jon Kimura Parker performing the Barber Concerto with Yoel Levi and the Atlanta Symphony.

personal reflections on Dr. King's life and works.

(Philadelphia, January 3, 2003) The Philadelphia Orchestra, under the direction of Bobby McFerrin, pays tribute to a great man and his message at its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute Concert on Thursday, January 16 at 8:00 p.m. in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. This year's program, titled "In His Voice," features a Community Concert Choir of 200 voices, drawn from congregations and community choruses throughout the region. Two outstanding African-American students from local high schools will join the evening's host, noted storyteller Charlotte Blake Alston, in sharing personal reflections on the life and work of Dr. King. The concert is sponsored by CIGNA.
For the first time at the annual Tribute Concert, the Orchestra will honor two outstanding African-American high-school seniors who, through their superior academic and personal achievements, exemplify the ideals of Dr. King. Teachers and administrators from twenty-three schools in the Greater Philadelphia Metropolitan Area have nominated students based on their outstanding academic and personal achievements, as well as their commitment to the betterment of their community through volunteer service and related activities. From the original group of applicants seven students have been selected as finalists:
