VIVALDI: FOUR SEASONS

National Arts Centre Orchestra
Pinchas Zukerman, Conductor and Violin Vivaldi
Il Cimento dell'armonia e dell'invenzione, Op. 8 :
Le quattro stagioni (The Four Seasons), Nos. 1-4 Haydn
Symphony No. 49 in F minor "La Passione" This is the National Arts Centre Orchestra's first recording with Pinchas Zukerman, the two-time Grammy Award-winning violinist and conductor, who was named Music Director of the NAC Orchestra in 1998. It includes one of the most beloved classics of all time. Vivaldi's Four Seasons is one of the best known examples of "programme" music music that depicts people, places or moods, and tells a visual tale. From happy birds and bubbling brooks, to the hearty fun of a harvest festival and skaters sliding and falling on ice, The Four Seasons triumphs, and it could not be in better hands than those of superstar violinist Pinchas Zukerman. Vivaldi's masterpiece is central to the NAC Orchestra's Canada Tour, performed coast-to-coast in 1999. The music plays a prominent role in the important educational outreach of the Canada Tour, focussing on Vivaldi and the environment. The CD also includes Haydn's

Rolf Bertsch
"Confident and fluid on the podium, this Canadian is obviously a natural conductor who has been trapped too long in a pianist's body….After working calmly and unpretentiously with the soloists, Bertsch made a perfect tone poem of the Suite from Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier…One could not have asked for more." Montreal, The Gazette, December 2000. Hailed by critics, audiences, and musicians alike, Rolf Bertsch has quickly become one of Canada's leading young conductors. Appointed Assistant Conductor of the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal in January 2000 and recently named Conductor-in-Residence, he has built an impressive reputation as a conductor, pianist, communicator and teacher. His career has spanned a wide spectrum of musical experience and styles and has taken him to Europe, the Orient, and throughout North and South America. First Prize winner of the Canadian Music Competitions in 1978, Rolf Bertsch served for many years as pianist of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, as well as solo pianist for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. Highlights of his career as pianist have included a number of solo appearances with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal under the direction of Maestro Charles Dutoit, most notably in Carnegie Hall in 1997, as well as performances at the chamber music festivals in Saratoga and Ottawa.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a X-files fan with a grand piano
By Lenny Ann Low May 29 2002 Off-key performer ... Jon Kimura Parker fights back the jet lag at concert rehearsals yesterday. Photo: Tamara Dean He performed Wagner in a Viking helmet and false blonde braids, and slipped the X-Files theme into a Mozart concerto, but now Jon Kimura Parker has become the Superman of classical music. The Canadian virtuoso will be striking the ivories at the Opera House tonight, just 37 hours after a mad three-plane marathon dash from the United States in response to a rescue call from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Kimura Parker, who is replacing pianist Yefim Bronfman at the Emirates Master Series concerts, even managed to get to rehearsals yesterday, despite suffering jet lag. "I kinda get jazzed by the challenge ... I've always been someone to do something if it's theoretically possible," he said. Despite being one of the world's leading classical pianists, with distinctions aplenty, Kimura Parker likes to tinker with the serious nature of his profession.

Music by Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, and John Adams
St. Louis Symphony, 11/12/1999
Reviewed by Gary Scott
Back to the index This weekend two artists shared the spotlight at Powell Hall. Ebullient Canadian pianist Jon Kimura Parker joined forces with American conductor and composer John Adams in a program that included the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 , the great Russian Easter Overture by Rimsky-Korsakov and Adams' own new work, Naive and Sentimental Music It is a joy to hear two performers so completely at ease with their music. John Adams is better known as a composer than a conductor, but the orchestra was nevertheless thoroughly pliable and resilient under his direction. The musicians performed with a grace and cohesion that is rarely heard under the baton of a guest conductor. Jon Kimura Parker, as his complement, exudes an exuberant stage presence that would disarm the severest critic. He performed with such warmth and love for his craft that he accomplished the impossible: he made Rachmaninoff seem easy. Kimura Parker's strength and technique are relentless. In particular, his bass notesso beloved by Rachmaninoffroared with a depth that was spine tingling. At times it seemed as if Adams and Kimura Parker were not in complete agreement rhythmically, but they clung together overall and seemed in general agreement in matters of volume, balance and interpretation. The second half of the program was devoted to John Adams newest work

Berlioz, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Brahms were intimidated and challenged to write more daring compositions after Beethoven set a new standard. They all thought his pieces were too monumental to follow. Come hear the influential works of Beethoven alongside four famed composers who confronted their fears and created magnificent pieces of their own. Tickets: $15 - $57
