He has given two command performances for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, has recorded as guest soloist with Andre Previn and P.D.Q.Bach, jammed in an impromptu concert with Doc Severinsen and the original Tonight Show Orchestra, was profiled in the Japanese fashion magazine "Jiyu Jikan", and was a celebrity guest on the children's television program "Under the Umbrella Tree" on the Disney Channel. The distinguished pianist, who received the Order of Canada last year, performs his first Edmonton solo recital tonight at the Winspear, though he's played with the symphony several times. The occasion is close to Kimura Parker's heart - a benefit to launch the Marek Jablonski Prize for Chopin. This award will be given annually to a gifted young Canadian pianist who's outstanding in Chopin. The first winner, recently announced, is Thomas Yu, who studies at theUniversity of Saskatchewan. Jablonski, who died last May, had offered to give such a recital for the endowment of the prize, which was founded by the Alberta Registered Music Teachers' Association. The association and many of Jablonski's piano students weren't sure what to do, but Kimura Parker volunteered to perform himself.
