Finally the DVD we have all been waiting for. Aussie blues favourites The Backsliders have been playing their brand of the blues since 1989. The current line up is Rob Hirst (ex Midnight Oil skin man), master harmonica player Jim Conway and the only original member of the band Dom Turner (vocals and guitars).
"Live At The Basement" was recorded at Sydney's Basement establishment and highlights tracks from The Backsliders career including eight selections from the latest CD and their eighth release, "Hanoi". Some of the tunes are "Smokestack Lightning", "Ï Wish You Would", "You Got To Move", "House On The Corner", "Son Of The Father", "Wretch Like Me", "Kokomo", "You Three" and "House On The Corner". Hear them all in 5.1 surround sound.
DVD bonuses include an informative interview with Dom Tuner interwoven with rare studio clips plus a special live performance of "Hanoi". Overall an excellent visual of Australia's best country blues band. If you haven't scene The Backsliders live then "Live At The Basement" well show you what all the fuss is about. An instant classic.

Antonio Pompa-Baldi
Caldwell Fine Arts presents the Cleveland International Competition Winner, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, in Jewett Auditorium on Tuesday, March 20, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Select-a-Seat, door, or call 459-3405. Adults are $10-12 and students $8-10.
Caldwell is one of two Idaho communities to book the 1999 Winner of the Cleveland Piano Competition. Antonio was so successful at his August performance at the Sandpoint Music Festival with the Spokane Symphony that he was immediately re-engaged.
The Cleveland Competition is very difficult. The Robert Casadesus Society and the Cleveland Institute of Music founded this competition in 1975 to honor the memory of the great French pianist, Robert Casadesus who had close ties with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. A screening committee reviewed 220 audio tapes and documentation of pianists ages 19-32 from around the world. They invited 61 pianists to perform at the 1999 Cleveland International Competition.
Antonio Pompa-Baldi became the prize winner after four rounds of playing which took place August 8 to August 14. At the end of the first round, only 16 advanced. Every subsequent round reduced the candidates by half. Phillippe Bianconi, a Van Cliburn Silver Medalist, who performed here in 1986, was a winner of the Cleveland Competition in 1981. Other finalists among the many who have had successful careers have included Sergei Babayan, Benedetto Lupo, Neil Rutman, Edward Newman, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Angela Hewitt, John Owings and Per Tengstrand of Sweden, the 1997 winner.

One of the most popular country music acts on the contemporary scene, the Dixie Chicks major-label debut, Wide Open Spaces, remained ensconced at the top of the Billboard Top 200 chart for over 80 weeks. In August of '99 they released Fly, the long-awaited follow-up to Spaces, which reached #1 on the pop and country charts its first week. The trio, Natalie Maines, Martie Seidel and Emily Erwin, sing three-part harmony and play their own instruments like no one else performing today, paying their dues with three independently released albums and then exploding onto the music scene. Their natural charm and wily ways with songs have made them one of the most accomplished touring acts in the country, headlining and selling out large arenas on a regular basis. Their visit to

NSU orchestra performs Peter and the Wolf By Bob Pore - Campus Reporter On Nov. 18 at 4:00 p.m., the University Civic Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Alexander Fokkens, performed Peter and the Wolf by Sergey Prokofiev, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto Peter and the Wolf However, that was not the case for Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto . The french horns were sometimes a little too loud and would drown out the rest of the orchestra. Despite this, they could play quietly when necessary, and the piano soloist, John Owings, could always be heard. Owings is a magnificent pianist, and he played the solo part very well, always managing to keep up with the pace in the first and third movements. And the orchestra, when it wasn’t being drowned out, provided him with good accompaniment. Overall, it was a very good concert. This site designed by

http://www.stevebassettmusic.com/bio.html
"Steve Bassett's musical style is a synthesis of America's root music; blues, r&b, gospel, and rock & roll. Not only does Steve have a true feeling for the blues, he is a master of the gospel idiom, and in this combination of talents he is just about unique in music. He is a singer's singer and he communicates with his audience in a soulful front porch manner that crosses markets and generations and leaves his listener feeling like he has sung to them alone."
- John Hammond, Sr. -
Pretty flattering words, aren't they? They came from the mouth of the most legendary talent scout in the history of American popular music, John Hammond, Sr., the man who discovered and nurtured the careers of Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Billie Holliday, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Ray Vaughan and so many others. One could surmise that Mr. Hammond knew a thing or two about American music. His uncanny knack for discovering new talent earned him the respect of musicians worldwide throughout his long and distinguished career.
And Mr. Hammond's words ring true as you hear Steve for yourself.
