Fritz Gearhart violin John Owings piano KOCH INTERNATIONAL CLASSICS 3-7439-2 H1 [67:54] full-price by Chia Han-Leon In this day and age, an unattentive listener might brush this music off as just more late Romantic/Post-Romantic work in the singing violin over rippling piano variety. But listen carefully, and you will see the very careful and firm craftmanship of the composer; how the violin lines turn and sway dreamily, intensely over its carefully crafted piano accompaniment. And in such dedicated and sincere playing from violinst Fritz Gearhart and pianist John Owings. It would seem that this is a distinguishing point about Porter's music here. It at first sounds just like some late Romantic work, but often veers away into harmonies and gestures which belie something more modern. The performances here have this way of being at times restlessly Romantic and emotional, yet with turns of something more deliberate and structured, which I find suits this music very appropriately. The disc begins with three earlier one-movement works from 1919. First is the 61/2-minute Sonata in D minor - Romantic in tone, no doubt, yearning, sweet and a very pleasant introduction to Porter's world. Gearhart plays with graceful sincerity and noble passion, in music which is regal yet carefree. There is perhaps some Brahms, something Beethoven, something Schubert.

Koch International Classics 3-7528-2
First of all, this is a very beautifully recorded disc, Gearhart, with his creamy-sounding violin tone, seeming right in your listening room. Most reviewers will turn first to the unusual repertory presented here, but I couldn't help but comment on the full, rich sonics right off, sonics that, if you like up-close miking, you'll find of demonstration-caliber. The Suite for Two Violins, as pointed out in Gearhart's incisive and informative notes, is modeled on Baroque forms. Casadesus gives us a sort of neo-Classicism that sounds nothing like Stravinsky's from that time. Here the five movements that comprise the work effervesce with color and wit, and fully draw you into their modern Baroque world. What one notices about this work in particular is that it contains not one extra note, not one moment's dawdling. It's pure, masterfully-conceived music that suffers the ironic fate of existing only in the composer's manuscript. Surely some publisher will come forth now and publish this most attractive composition. The Chausson Hommage is another fine work, sweetly melancholy in the opening and playful and witty in the central and closing sections. Lead Stories Ready, willing and able to inspire others CP not a stumbling block for Southern High grad The Class of 2004: Each spring, The Baltimore Guide profiles graduating seniors from high schools in the area. Students were selected by their respective institutions. By Mary Helen Sprecher Newsroom@baltimoreguide.com Classes are just letting out for the day at Southern High School. On this sunny spring afternoon, the happy chaos of students streaming through the halls and heading for the exits is in full bloom. Over and above the noise, a smooth, sonorous voice comes over the public address system. Students are being reminded of school rules, and of deadlines for testing and college applications. Teachers are admonished to turn in attendance figures. The voice, disembodied and authoritative, floats through the halls, cutting through the babble, stopping discussion in its tracks, making students cock their heads and listen. In the administrative office, in a corner near the door is an electric wheelchair. In the wheelchair sits a student, slight of build, his body twisted in a painful manner so that he can hold the phone up to his ear. And it is he who is issuing the directives with absolute assurance and bone-deep, unshakeable confidence. "I really do get inspired by Eric," sighs Shirley Cathorne, Southern’s principal, as she watches him go about making the announcements. "He inspires not just adults but his peers. We all think we’ve faced pain, we all think we’ve faced stress. Then you see Eric going up the hallway..." her voice trails off, and she thinks for a moment, then adds, "and you realize you haven’t faced anything at all by comparison."

Mrs. Jacqueline Owings Interviewer: Marsha Peart
Location: Baltimore, Maryland
Date: April 11, 2002 Edited by: Mrs. Owings and E. Schaaf Q: Please state your name. Owings: My name is Jacqueline Owings. I live in Baltimore, Maryland. Q: Owings: I was raised here. Q: Raised in Baltimore. You came here at the age of one or so. Owings: Less. Q: You had all your educational experience here in Baltimore. You stated also in the pre-interview that music has always been a part of your life. Could discuss what music was like for you at home while you were growing up? Owings: I guess it probably had more to do with going to church than anything else. My grandmother sang in her church choir, and so I would hear her choir, I would hear music at church. And then in the early days, without television and some of the other kinds of entertainment, a lot of churches gave concerts. Also at my church, a Methodist Church, we had what was called the Epworth League, which was an organization for young people. On Sunday afternoons there would be programs with discussions, poetry and music. Very often you might have singers from from Morgan State College Q: Owings: My grandmother raised me.

PIANO WORKS OF CHARLES T. GRIFFES
Ivo Kaltchev, piano. Gega New CD 123, 1998. One compact disc.
Of all the might-have-beens in American music, few are more poignant than the case of Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920), who died after a short and undeservedly obscure career in music. Although trained in Germany, Griffes turned increasingly to French models for inspiration during his brief maturity, producing some fine works with a certain originality. Originality, however, is not the first impression left by Ivo Kaltchev's Griffes disc. The first two of the four Roman Sketches, Op. 7 , "The White Peacock" and "Nightfall" are overly indebted to Debussy. "The Fountain of Acqua Paola" opens with a fine American-sounding melody, but then descends into standard late-Romantic note-spinning. Things pick up considerably with the last piece in this set; "Clouds" is music of genuine beauty, of wispy and a bit lightweight.
"The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan," in its orchestral setting, was among the few works of Griffes to achieve some attention in his lifetime. In the original piano version, its dark opening brings Mussorgsky to mind, and Griffes works this idiom effectively with some ominous left-hand passages. Bulgarian pianist Kaltchev digs deep into the Slavic darkness of these measures, and to great effect. So, too, in the brooding "A Winter Landscape," heard here in its world premiere recording. "Legend" has a strong individual stamp; "De Profundis" is a less compelling, if still craftsmanly, essay in the Romantic style. The most ambitious work on the disc, the
