As I say, Orkis does these things so well, I don't even think of them as new music, but as music. It couldn't have been easy. What a terrific player.

Violin
Anne-Sophie Mutter is currently dividing her schedule between concerts as soloist with international orchestras and chamber music recitals both as a member of the Mutter-Previn-Harell trio and with pianist Lambert Orkis.
She opened the 2002-03 season touring six United States cities with a recital program entitled "Tango Song and Dance"; directly afterwards she recorded the Previn Violin Concerto with the same forces with which she gave the March 2002 World Premiere: Boston Symphony Orchestra, with the composer conducting.
Ms. Mutter opens 2003 touring Germany with the Munich Philharmonic and Sir Andre Previn during February performing the Korngold Concerto. She then tours Spain with the recently formed Trio in which Andre Previn is the pianist and Lynn Harrell the cellist before returning to the United States for the New York premiere of the Previn Concerto. Throughout May Ms. Mutter and Mr. Orkis perform the "Tango Song and Dance" program on an extended European tour.
Previn's Violin Concerto and his "Tango Song and Dance" represent the newest of the many works that composers have written specifically for Ms. Mutter originating with Witold Lutoslawski in 1986, and including since then Krzysztof Penderecki, Wolfgang Rihm, Henri Dutilleux, Norbet Moret and Sebastian Currier.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Sonatas with Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis
Cycle begins airing on Classica (Germany) on April 28, 2001
In 1998 the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter dedicated herself to what was no doubt the most important project of her career to date. She performed all ten violin sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven on a world tour with the pianist Lambert Orkis. It was a climax in the longtime collaboration between the two artists. The live recording of the sonatas was released in fall 1998, while the tour was still underway. For this recording, the two artists won a prestigious Grammy Award in February 2000. Anne-Sophie Mutter's dazzling career began when the thirteen-year-old girl caught the attention of Herbert von Karajan, who promptly hired her to concertize with the Berlin Philharmonic. Today she numbers among the greatest violinists in the world. "For two hours we take part in a wonderfully spontaneous, edgy, witty, but at times also introspective dialogue - amazingly assured, freely phrased, masterfully braving every technical obstacle…"

Anne-Sophie Mutter, goddess of the violin, is one of the crown jewels in Deutsche Grammophon’s stable of recording artists. In order to celebrate Ms. Mutter’s career-long kinship with Ludwig van Beethoven, the label has released the DVD “Anne-Sophie Mutter: A Life With Beethoven”. The disc provides an entertaining, even enthralling introduction to the joys of chamber music performed at the highest levels. A recent trip to a local music store yielded the following observation from the classical music department’s handler: “People have this idiotic notion about what classical music is. They think ‘Josh Groban’ or ‘Andrea Bocelli’ or ‘Charlotte Church’. That’s not classical musicthat’s rubbish.” While I don’t share his view that the vocalists whom he named are “rubbish”, I understand his frustration. In order to survive commercially, the classical music world has come to rely on superstar performers who aren’t necessarily the best in their fields of expertise. This trend has lead to the emergence of acts that present “greatest hits” rather than full-fledged compositions. For example, the likes of Josh Groban release albums filled with a couple of show-y songs, but these albums are not cohesive musical wholes (which is the problem with most music created post-1950everyone’s too busy writing 5-minute ditties rather than harnessing energies to create actual works).

    A tale of two prodigies
by Jay Nordlinger A s fate had it, the violinists Joshua Bell and Anne-Sophie Mutter gave recitals in New York on consecutive January nights. As fate has also had it, they are about the same age (Bell is thirty-two, Mutter thirty-six), they were famous as teenagers, and they have large and enthusiastic followings. They seem destined to be compared, or at least jointly discussed. cantabile Bell, who enjoyed superb training, has the unteachable: musical judgment, taste. The repertory of the violin is vast, and he can play all of it, with no specialty or deficiency. He recalls a violinist of a past generation, Zino Francescatti, the impeccable Frenchman with the lilting Italian name. Bell, like him, is something better than a violinist: He is a musician. He is also one of the most underrated performers, critically, before the public today, a condition that can hardly last forever. T The second half of the program opened with a work by George Crumb, his Four Nocturnes for Violin and Piano (Night Music II Tzigane Habanera , which she dispatched limply and indifferently.
