The prolific and long-lived composer Alexander Tcherepnin (1899-1977) is pictured here shortly before he composed his 2nd piano concerto (I chose it for illustration in preference to the grinning publicity photos of pianist and conductor, which reminded me of one's childhood agony when exhorted to 'smile for the picture'!). Prokofiev was a pupil of Tcherepnin's father, and there are clear affinities. The concerto, 'based essentially upon a leap of a fourth', is sparky and optimistic music, typical of (for me) a favourite decade of the last century. A motoric development subsides to introduce a wide ranging set of variations 'bursting with original technical, contrapuntal and rhythmic finesse'. It is deftly orchestrated and played with verve and charm by

New Tourist Information Centre for Llangollen
Work by world-renowned artist, Sir Kyffin Williams OBE is featuring as part of a special exhibition to mark the official opening of the first cultural tourism, library and learning centre in Wales. Y Capel, a restored 19th century Baptist chapel in Castle Street, Llangollen is unique as it's the first building of its kind to offer a library, art and craft gallery, tourist information centre and one stop shop all under the same roof. Moving to the new premises has allowed the Library and Information Service to expand its range of resources; in addition to the traditional books and information, it has doubled the number of computers for public use. The new building also has a meeting room available for public use, with full access for the disabled. A glass sculpture by Chris Byrd-Jones has been specially commissioned to mark the official opening of the centre which was carried out by Sir Kyffin Williams on Saturday, June 21. The Tourist Information Centre is managed by North Wales Tourism on behalf of Denbighshire County Council. “We’re very pleased with the number of visitors to the new centre” said Steven Davison of North Wales Tourism, “and this wonderful new facility where a visitor can see great works of art, choose from a wide range of quality merchandise, pick up a leaflet on a visitor attraction and book their local accommodation has to be good news for Llangollen”.

Classical notes
By Dick O'Riordan
The Palestrina Choir, based in the Pro-Cathedral, Dublin, this year celebrates the centenary of its founding by Edward Martyn, a wealthy landowner from Galway.Martyn is probably better known for his involvement with WB Yeats and Lady Gregory in the foundation of the Irish Literary Theatre, which later became the Abbey Theatre.
His interest in theatre was matched by his interest in church music, and visits to the great cathedrals of Europe convinced him that Dublin needed music of an equal standard. He wished, in particular, to promote the music
of the Italian composer, Giovanni da Palestrina, considered the father of liturgical music.
The Palestrina choristers range in ages from 8 to 14 and leave when their voices break. The choir's most famous member was the legendary tenor John McCormack.
As part of its centenary celebrations there is a reunion for past and present choristers and their families on Friday, March 28 in the Pro-Cathedral at 7.30pm. Other events include the singing of Nunc Dimittis - a specially commissioned work by Col i nM a w by-with the Pennsylvania Choir on May 2 and a visit to the magnificent St David's Cathedral, Cardiff, on June 15. 01-8745441
The National Symphony Orchestra's concert in the NCH next Friday is a taster for part of the schedule the orchestra has chosen for its tour of the east coast of the United States in the next few weeks. It includes Irish composer Ian Wilson's Rise, Brahms' first symphony and Beethoven's piano concerto No 4 with John O'Conor as soloist.

F A Q Computer Audio Circuits to build Room Acoustics ... Clinic/Cases Listening ability and SSO concerts Dear Readers, Very often, when Joe and I tried our best to improve a system for an audiophile, then at the end of the day, the answer could be, ‘are there any differences?’. The answer could be discouraging, and also does not speak too well of the audiophile’s ability. This is not uncommon. Joe sometimes could not help but asked, ‘why are so many people behave as if they are deaf ?’
We are not putting these audiophiles down. Listening is indeed a skill, something that needs sharpening over time. Joe is a very good pianist. I am a qualified violin teacher. Our ears were well trained. I did not know that it was the beginning of hell for me. Learning the violin ruined my childhood. Learning the violin was very difficult. Stiff shoulders, stiff neck, painful fingers, swollen chin, and a fear that the violin teacher will shout again if I did not play the tunes properly. I was not very gifted in playing the violin. Many times I tried to escape the violin lessons, and was badly punished. Most of the time my parents canned me was because of the music lessons. As time went by, I realized I finished my grade 5 violin playing exam at one stage. I then become more interested in studying music, and nearly wanted to be a full time music worker. I started going to SSO concerts very often. When I was 14, I joined the SYO, which was the Singapore Youth Orchestra. I was playing the second violin, and later was playing the first violin. It was a very time consuming devotion. Not only I had to practise for my own lessons, I had to join the weekly practise help in Victoria Concert hall. On top of these, I had to keep up with the studies in school.
