Since then her career has taken her across Britain, playing to critical acclaim in the Purcell Room, the Wigmore Hall, St Martin-in-the- Fields, and the Barbican, as well as making broadcasts for BBC, Radio 3. Recent engagements included a performance of Brahms 2nd Piano Concerto, and Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Aho acknowledges an early debt to Shostakovich but soon developed a recognizable voice of his own. Like his great predecessor, his music seems to have a strong narrative element without being programmatic. It might be said to be more concerned with the life of the soul than with physical events and seems to strike a resonant chord in many listeners. As such it has collected a wide following. BIS has already recorded six of Kalevi Aho's symphonies. The third symphony began life early on in his career but was laid aside while he was writing his fourth symphony. He felt unable to complete the orchestration at the time. The work was originally conceived as a violin concerto but turned itself into what the composer describes as a 'sinfonia concertante'. Aho has since used this model in three of his later symphonies scored, respectively for organ and orchestra, trombone and orchestra and six percussionists with orchestra. The composer has described his vision of the work, how the individual is pitched against the mass and how the individual seems doomed to a disastrous end - though, right at the end, there is an intimation of a possible reconciliation.

BIOGRAPHY Born in 1976 in London, Matthew Trusler began his violin studies with Sheila Nelson. At the age of thirteen he won the Frederick Grinke scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London and he then went on to win the outstanding student's prize at the Mozarteum Sommerakademie in Salzburg. He studied with Jean-Jacques Kantorow at the Rotterdam Conservatoire and took several courses with Ruggiero Ricci, who described him as 'one of the most remarkable young violinists I've come across in many years.' He completed his studies at the Curtis Institute, Philadelphia with Viktor Danchenko. In the current season Matthew will participate at the Newbury Spring Festival, the Warwick Festival and the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. And Noriko Ogawa most assuredly sets her standard here, which places her as a leading exponent of this music, surely the greatest piano music of the 20th century. It is a remarkable achievement, not least because she is so young. But by every standard of Debussy playing - subtlety, atmosphere, phrasing, shading, precision - she is excellent. Her attention to the composer's carefully expressed instructions resounds to the music's details with due care and attention, with the result that the performances achieve a special insight. The very opening of the programme reflects these particular strengths, and is really compelling.

Alexander was the son of Nikolai. His mother was a singer. He had two sons; both of them composers: Sergei (b.1941) and Ivan (1943-98). Alexander's music is tinged with 'soft' cut dissonance. It is for example nowhere near as 'thorny' as Rawsthorne or Frankel or Sessions; more like the effect of a single chili in a large savoury dish. It gives an edge - no more. Tcherepnin grew up in St Petersburg with Glazunov and Rimsky as house visitors. After the Revolution the family moved to Tbilisi, capital of Georgia. Tcherepnin developed a tonality system all his own and much harnessed to the melodic resource of Georgian folk music. In 1921 a move to Paris resulted in his joining a group of ex-pats livings there. His circle included Martinu and Tansman. He lived in China and Japan between 1934 and 1937. He married the concert pianist Lee Hsien Ming and spent the war years in Paris. In 1948 he emigrated to the USA living in Chicago and New York. Tcherepnin was a sensational concert pianist. BIS's project (financially supported by the Singapore SO's Ladies' League - to whom warm thanks are due!). is to record all four of the Tcherepnin symphonies and with this disc their project completes full circle. I hope in due course to complete the picture with a review of the first CD (BIS-CD-1017).
